Watch as a leaking front crankshaft oil seal is replaced on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier with the 2.2L Ecotec engine. IMPORTANT NOTE: Install a new crank pulley bolt. This is a two hour job for a home mechanic with a few simple tools. For step by step text instructions and still pictures of this procedure see:www.originalmechanic.com/2015/...

Have not replaced front main on the L61 Ecotec. I do know that some engines have a crankshaft repair sleeve if your crank snout is worn down after 150,000 miles. It comes with super adhesive and slips over the crank snout. I do know that a worn surface can still leak oil even with a new seal. Your a pretty straight forward RU-vidr, so I thought I would mention the above. Cheers Sir!

Very nice straight forward video. Because of you I had almost an enjoyable experience. I tried to get a "speedy sleeve" for the balancer shaft but didn't find one for the Ecotec engine so the parts guy said he had a new balancer for 15 bucks more than the speedy sleeve. I put it on the crankshaft and it rubbed on the cover. The snout on the new balancer was 1/8" shorter than the original. I put the old balancer back on and it doesn't leak. The search for parts turned a 1 1/2 hour project into a full afternoon. Once again, The Original Mechanic, a great video and thanks for taking the time.

Great video! I replaced my harmonis balancer also so i listened all 10 of my cover bolts so i knew my seal was perfectly centered around my vibration dampner. I tightened everything to 89 in lbs and now were happy! Great video!

best video I watch this year..LOL you just saved me a few hundred dollars....my 2013 equinox started leaking oil under the right side of the engine. Upon trying to reach a mechanic I went and got a quote to my surprised that was 300 to 500 fix but they wouldn't tell me exactly what was the issue..I was skeptical to leave my car and pay that much because last time my wife got a check engine light and she took the car to the Chevy dealership to scanned the for the code and they swap a variable timing solenoid which we were charged $700 .Dame!! thanks to this video I went and did this on my own fix the problem and no more leak..yayyy...the seal was just 8 bucks, hardest part was removing the pulley bolt..I bought a tool on amazon for $10 which made it easy....thanks for sharing this video,,,

Thanks for the good video tutorial...I'm thinking of picking up a Malibu with a 2.2 for cheap due to this oil leak... My understanding is that the early 2.2 's design flaw is that the seal hardens in cold weather and get's shredded by the crank pulley...the new design seal doesn't.

+The Original Mechanic. Is the oil seal the common leak and can the timing cover leak too?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 8 лет назад
+Eloy Ortega In my experience the crankshaft oil seal is the common cause of leaks at the front of the engine. I believe the timing cover is more of a dust cover and should not leak fluids

so the crank shaft pully just runs the belts? you dont need to Jack up the engine? my mechanic must not know what hes talking about then i can do this repair my self what is the total time on this? about 2 to 3 hours?.
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 лет назад
For this repair I did not have to jack up the engine. The crankshaft pulley runs the alternator and the AC compressor. Yeah, 2-3 hours is reasonable if you have all the tools needed handy and at least some car repair DIY experience. A novice would need more time...

Good job, only thing I did differently was spring for a new $10 pulley bolt from the Chevy dealer because it is a "torque to yield" bolt and should never be reused. (GM & Haynes Repair Manuals)

Awesome video. I just replaced this on my girlfriends car and it started leaking again a few weeks later. Could the vehicle be building up too much pressure in the bottom end so it starts pushing oil out through the seal?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 5 лет назад
I've had to do a "practice" seal a time or to get them seated properly. Sometimes they roll going in. I never heard of high pressure causing a leak.
@Wilmafistfit69
@Wilmafistfit69 5 лет назад
@@TheOriginalMechanic yeah I looked into the issue some more, apparently when it's cold some ice can build up on the seal and when you start the vehicle it can cause the seal to rip. So I'll try to replace it again and see how it goes since its warming up.

Great video, I was curious if I'd need a puller for the crank pulley. My 2003 Saturn l200 has the same engine and let the oil out the same seal. I may opt to do a timing chain but I'm not excited about the idea.
@TheOriginalMechanic

The seal is among the easiest I have done, the timing chain among the hardest. I have a set of You Tube videos on the chain replacement btw. .
@ExtraFungus
@ExtraFungus 3 года назад
@@TheOriginalMechanic I may get another engine, do all new seals and swap it in. I have a Pontiac Fiero I really want to put a ecotec in so the engine that's in the Saturn now might not be a bad candidate for a bottom end build and turbo for the Fiero.
@ExtraFungus
@ExtraFungus 3 года назад
@@TheOriginalMechanic you were right, super simple. The Saturn L200 has an AC line right in the way of getting the crank bolt out, no problem though, the only extra thing I had to do was loosen the motor mount bolts so the engine dropped down with plenty of space to get a socket on it.
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 3 года назад
@@ExtraFungus Good job. Thanks for sharing the detail on the AC line.

when replacing the seal and with the crank pulley and bolt removed, should't you be using a new crank bolt for this job? isn' the crank pulley bolt a TTY (torque to yeild) bolt? meaning it gets torqued past its elasticity point and becomes permanently elongated. wouldn't that mean reusing the original bolt would be a bad and potentially dangerous outcome?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 лет назад
You are correct. A new crank pulley should be obtained from a dealership for this job.

I have a saab with the same issue. Do u have to drain the oil before u take out the seal?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 5 лет назад
I always have to minimize oil draining out. This may not be a big deal though, since the crankshaft is above the oil pan.

Video is okay except. You use Loctite on the outside of that seal. The rubber backed seals are prone to just falling out. Also Clean the balancer before you put it back on and put a little dab of silicon where the key way is. They are known for seeping out oil.

We bought a 09 malibu for our daughter to go to school, that car is the worst piece of junk we've ever owned, nothing but problems with those engines. It started leaking oil really bad out of the crank seal and oil pressure sensor, broke the belt, A/C compressor went out,, starter went out, all of this within months. Our 08 toyota camry 4 cylinder manual transmission has 240,000 miles and runs like new, no leaks, no noises, no smoke, absolutely nothing wrong. Next car is gonna be another toyota.
