Thanks man! To those watching this, get the $36 belt from napa. Looks exactly the same as factory. The other ones are cheaper and thinner. Not fun to realize this half way through the repair.
Hey Jim, Just to let you know - you're helping people keep their 4Runners in shape not only in the USA, but in Kazakhstan also - right on the opposite side of the planet lol Thank you sir for your help!
The key tip missing from this video is how the hell do you take the serpentine belt off and on without removing the fan after you have got it off the tensioner.I had to google it to realise you can thread the old and new fan belt on around the fan by keeping it in place. It's a key step completely overlooked and not spoken about that a DIY first timer needs. Thanks for video otherwise. And when putting the mew fan belt back on you need to really push the tensioner bolt up a lot more than when taking iff off to get enough slack to put it around all the pulleys. Thanks a lot for the video and the image showing how it threads back on. Once you have taken the steel undertray off this is a 30 min job tops as a newbie
Good instructions, thanks. I will change this belt myself next time. My mechanic charged me 200 bucks to change the 4runner belt in my wife’s car, seems like a rip off considering how easy it is.
Your video covers that basics, great job. I found that taking the belt off was very easy, as you described. However, with my 2006 Tacoma TRD Sport (same engine setup) getting the new belt on was more challenging. Working from the top I could not turn the tensioner enough to slip the new belt on to any of the pulleys, so I took the skid plate off and worked it on from underneath. There is more room to access the belt, route the belt around the pulleys, and turn the tensioner to enough to get the new belt over the last pulley. I hope this suggestion helps.
Thanks for the video. Will be changing mine out this week after toyota so graciously said they would do it for 2-3 hundred bucks during an inspection for my leaf spring replacement. No thanks. By the way. Glad you turned the truck off in time. I was in suspense watching that wrench creep its way down the cover and almost going in to the engine compartment.
I closed my eyes and it was like Bobby Deniro’s garage in here! Love that Jersey accent! I’m gonna do this soon on my 03 Sport plus check all the pulleys for noise. Mines got 200k and it sounds like idler, tensioner or power steering pulley is making an awful hum. Thanks for the great video. The complainers can just fugget-about-it! Lol
Thanks Jim. It gave me a hint how to do the job. On the replacement belt, is there a way to know that it’s on the right tension ( not loose, but not to tight)? Thanks.
They do sell a tool to check the tension but a good way to tell is you should have about 3/4 of an inch play. Thanks for watching.I'm happy to help. Don't forget to hit the bell for notifications when a new video is posted
I have 04 Toy 4 Runner w/ 140k mi. O'Reilly partsman stated I should change belt. He also said I should change tensioner b/c bearing goes out. Do you agree?
I agree, since it is under the alternator and AC compressor, a pain to change. NOTE: if you just change the pulley, the tensioner pulley bolt on my 2003 4 runner is reverse threads. Make sure you know before attempting to loosen the bolt! Be careful if you are just changing the tensioner pulley.
thanks,,,I am in Australia my car is Toyota Prado 2006 so 10 year old just have 100000km 1kilometer=0.621388181 mile.do you think I need to change because already 10 years??
