Okay I'm not a mechanic this is the very fist time I've worked on my truck more then a tire change. But no money means I got to do it myself. And this made it soo simple. I got it done in an hour and a half. Took the tire off and fallow the steps... only thing I'd add I need extra leverage luckily I had a pipe in my change tire kit but that is something others might need too.

Nice! This is one of the best and most clear videos on this repair. And finally, a manual transmission example that I’ve been looking for! That exhaust bracket seems to be different than the automatic tranny vids I’ve seen. Looks like you’ve done the SAS on yours. Love the chalk board steps (as with your off road vids). Thank you!

Very good video, only problem is it seems you have a big suspension mod. Making a lot more space available. Very difficult to do on a standard 96 prado. But I’ll get it done 😂

aye mate, i own a 97 prado absolute mint condition just recently i had to change the starter as i took it down to Tasmania old telly track. Got stuck in some deep water and yeah had to change it so thanks for the help mate cheers.

Turns out there are a few different variations on how to remove the starter. Mine came out above the frame rail, but I had to remove the transmission dipstick and unbolt and move the brake line. Even then it was defit a jigsaw puzzle to get it out! But not impossible!

I have the same engine on my 04 Prerunner. Do you remember the mileage on yours when you had to replace it? Was it the original Denso? If so, how’s the TYC brand holding up? How many mileage does it have now?

Once you have it out, replace the solenoid and contacts for about 25.00. js Good to go. :D

@@cullumstirling If it is the OEM 'yota starter you want to do that or have it done. If not.. get that replacement in there and hope it goes 200-250k. Lifetime warranties are pointless if the part fails every 3-4 years due to poor seals. ymmv Our 2000 OEM starter in the Limited lasted 243k miles.

Can also replace those contacts. I think a rebuilt kit is 20 bucks or so. I just did it today. Saved some money and still have my genuine toyota starter. Good vid mate hows that starter holding up since this was awhile.ago? Curiois

You can do that too. For me, the time it would take spent rebuilding the thing vs putting in a completely brand new one for not much more was well worth it. It's strong. Absolutely no delays on start-up anymore.

For me, it was that my starter was taking more and more clicks to start the truck until it just stopped turning over. I tested the battery, since that is the easiest to do, and it turned out the battery could no longer hold a charge so I replaced it and thought that would do it. Unfortunately, when I tried to start the engine it just made a hard click sound. So, the signs for me were the progressively harder time to turn over the engine over the course of a few days and then the inability to start at all.

Is there a test to know if starter is bad? Had to replace starter at 85k. Here I am at 170k and same symptoms as before. I was skeptical when it died at 85k, figured it was a fluke, but here I am again. 🙄 thanks

You'll want to go through a series of tests, which will eventually lead you to checking for your system voltage at the starter solenoid. If you are getting the correct voltage to the starter, than you know the problem is with the starter. For me it was a new battery but the sound when I tried the ignition was a loud click. LIke the starter tried to turn one time and quit.

I have a 03 Tacoma with this motor and holy shit. There is no room to work. I removed the trans dipstick pipe which helped but it was still a pain. And idk why but my bolts for the starter would start and get about half way in and then get harder to turn. But they weren't cross threading.

@@JamesBoyer-cn7bc from the top of the engine there is one bolt near the top of the tube. I had a really hard time getting it back in but I've taken it out before and don't remember it being that hard.
