Dodge ram van 3500 5.9L V8 Thermostat Replacement!
There really is no way to repair a thermostat. Just install a new one.
It's an aggravating task though. Thanks Mopar, Chrysler...

I just acquired a 94 B250, 164K. No known maintenance history. I really appreciate that you took the time to make video of all of these B250 things!!!! I also really appreciate your honest and humorous commentary. I know these videos are not exactly new releases, but That only elevates my appreciation of your channel.

Good video. Over the past nine years and 120k I've put two thermostats in my '94 with the 5.2 318. Both times I just pulled the accessory bracket forward with the alternator and A/C compressor attached. I've found it relatively easier to do it that way by cutting the top radiator shroud in half for removal and bridging the two pieces with custom brackets and bolts. Once the shroud is outta there there's room to give away and everything opens up

Man your videos saved my ASS. ended up having to remove the alternator and ac pump including the mounting bracket to remove and replace the thermo gasket. Living in my van and camped outside of O'Reilly's for a few days but I got er done. THANK YOU.

You are very Welcome! There a plastic Tee hose connector on the top of the engine towards the fire wall. They split over time and all your coolant leaks out. We were stuck in the desert for a day. I had to engineer a fix out of a solar light and medical tape. Buy one. for your parts. :)

Yes it’s aggravating for sure. Someone suggested removing the doghouse inside the van and then accessing the thermostat from back. Good suggestion, I’m just not that flexible 😉

So 6 hours later I finally got my thermostat replaced. If the hose clamp on the thermostat tube is turned the wrong way to make it impossible to remove, don't spend 3 hours trying to get it off. Instead just take the thermostat bolts out and the whole thing off at one time. Unbolt the alternator and A/c compressor move them as far as possible. That was one terrible job.

Kool I just had the water pump replaced Tuesday at a shop. I told him to replace the thermostat while he was at it. $ wasn't a problem since it was down. Now it's still running hot. I will try & change this myself. I have 223k miles on my 03 Dodge B2500 5.2L. Thanks
@CheapGeek

You may also want to look at replacing the fan clutch. Especially since the water pump and tstat were replaced. Fan clutch regulates cooling and can cause overheating. They run about 30-50 buck on Amazon. Depends on the motor. For example 5.9 heating duty fan clutch is around $50.00. Let me know what happens :)

I fixed it, no leaks. It was rusty. I had to scoot the alternator and a/c compressor over & 3.5hrs

I'm so glad to have an 84 B250 (with no AC). I didn't have to move a single thing to get to the thermostat housing. Of course... it's leaking now so I'm here to see if I put the thermostat/gasket in on the wrong order. Edit: Aaaaand I had put the gasket first, then the thermostat (which is sitting on top of the gasket) then the housing. Luckily I have another gasket and I can get that done in about 10 min tomorrow. Thanks for the helpful video.

A thermostat is one of the things you always want to buy at dealer only. Those failsafe fail quite often. They do fail safe but you have to do the work all over again where a dealer thermostat change every 5 years with you're coolant plus the temp controll much more acurate.

Own a dodge ram b250 van, it’s easier and possible to access the thermostat and replace it from the dog house. I used a camera with the goose neck to make that possible.

With a 6" extension and a ratchet, you can get the thermostat out by only removing the belt, top alternator bolt and trans fluid bracket bolt. Seeing the bolt closest to the ac isnt possible but it's easy to find based on where the alternator side bolt is in conjunction with the shape of the gasket.
@weredig0
@weredig0 4 года назад
What size of socket do I need for those two bolts?
@Joedoriamusic
@Joedoriamusic 7 лет назад
Brand new belt of 5 months = little reason to fully remove. Just loosen enough to get off the alt. Also rec a Stant SuperStat brand tstat over Moto-rad fail-safe. The fail-safe will fail on the open side (a good thing) but they fail easily and far too early (not the better make and build). Go oem temp 195 for best results.

Thanks for the video as I am doing this job next week. Where did you find that push bar or brush bar for the front? I have a 1998 B1500 and I have looked around and can't seem to find any that say it will fit this van.
@CheapGeek
@CheapGeek Год назад
So as far the push bar goes. I bought it off Amazon. It’s actually for a Ram Truck. It’s not supposed to fit. But, if you reverse the mounting brackets when you mount them to the van, and then mount the Bull bar to the brackets it’ll fit. You’ll need to take the bumper off to better access the mounting holes on the van. I actually made a video about it. I’ll try to find it. CheapGeek Well, I just bought a sweet RV, based on the 1980 GMC Vandura, 62K miles for $1k......a nice road-trip was in store. Unfortunately I did not think things through......many cities are cracking-down on any type of vehicle that is technically an RV, even camper-vans..... lots of parking restrictions/no parking and cops ramping-up enforcement. So I bit the bullet and bought a beater Ramvan......not perfect, but less of a target than an RV.
