Very concise video. For newbies, I'd recommend removing the radiator to give more room to work and to protect the radiator from damage. Thank you for sharing.

You are correct but I just put a stiff piece of cardboard to protect radiator.

Followed this for a 1998 2.2 L (not dual cam). Also this year had the 97 version pencil tensioner (apparently Subaru continued the configuration into some of the 98 models (not widely known). Radiator stayed in place, but duct taped a thin cabinetry plywood over the radiator to prevent accidental damage). My son and I Completed R and R in 5.5 hours (including spark plug change). We had a lift in our home shop so it was convenient. I've had a great deal of automotive and offroad vehicle experience so It was straightforward for us. Local shops wanted $1800-2200. Apparently they can make money easier then these jobs. All in all the video was excellent and I appreciated how methodical each step was covered.

Checked out your video to see how bad this fix would be. And i have to say, you are a genius with the camera angles. And the distance, with/without the mirror is amazing. Perfect kind of video for weekend warrior mechanics like myself. Keep up the great work.

I'm getting ready to do my '99 outback.The bits of fuel line covering the jaws of the pliers is a good idea. I'll use it! Thanks.

what a great job on this video. I am about to do this job and you took most of the fear and questions away. just did the radiator and thermostat so some of the steps are familiar...the water pump was the cause of radiator failure, which I now know

Thanks saved me about 900 by doing it myself. Its even easier if you take the whole radiator out. More work space.

This is a great video, thank you. Before I dive into this project I was curious if there is any way to replace the water pump gasket without having to get into timing?

workshop used 3 ohr to shift spark plugs. but do in in 40 min vith engine elevator, just loosen bolts that hold engine to frame, then lift engine up one fist, so its easy to shift spark plugs. workshop sheef god angry as hell when i told him how to di it fast. I think they ripping people off.

older video but getting teh belt back on is a super mega hard thing, the simple muscle work of getting that belt on in such a TIGHT space, and getting those tensioners and idlers on is hard. no matter what I do, there's like... an inch of belt being eaten somewhere. and that's WITH those crank lockers, one for each side!

Noticed you went over the hardest part with "just hold it on there"...how? It is friggin impossible to keep the gasket lined up whilst lining up the bolts to the holes at the same time. Gasket slips off EVERY TIME.

Thanks for the video. I am puzzled by the alignment of the cam pulleys on the driver side. From my vantage point viewing this it did not look like they were perfect. On my 97 they look the same way (using a mirror). I am wondering of the consequences of being a couple teeth off. Also,on the alignment of the crank pulley -you sort of breezed thru exactly what you were aligning to. For me, it looked like you were slightly off center. Also I found that the standard practice at Subaru (whenever a timing belt is replaced) is to remove the cam sprockets to inspect the integrity of the keys. I had a Subaru mechanic who ignored this step and ran up a huge bill for the owner as the mechanic tried everything he knew to compensate for a sheared cam key. The problem was a cam key was sheared on a cold weather start.This was on a 92 non-interference engine. I bought the car with a box of parts in the trunk after the owner gave up on the repair to stop the financial bleeding.

Would it be the same process on a 98 Subaru legacy 2.5l?
@HowtoAutomotive
@HowtoAutomotive 3 года назад
Yes it’s gonna be pretty much the same thing there might be some small differences as far as the brackets or something but the timing belt set up will be the same.

I'll be doing this to my legacy in a few months, I'll be using your video to guide me through. Did you ad gasket sealer when you installed the water pump? Thank you for your help.

Why take off the fans from the radiator? Extra work for nothing.
@neilw.7153
@neilw.7153 7 лет назад
So there is room to remove the timing cover, timing belt and pinion gears.
@SirLancearon
@SirLancearon 7 лет назад
jim wagner impossible to do without doing so. A bolt for removal for the fan belt would only have 1/2 an inch for ur ratchet and such if rad fans were still there
