Turbo replacement: 4 to 6 hours ($400 / $1,800 / $2,800)
In this video I helped a viewer replace the turbo in his 2005 Audi A4. It had about 175,000 miles. He was driving it with the turbo blown so it wasn't picking up speed very well and it destroyed the catalysis converter (not good).
If anyone knows torque values, please message them in the comments. Thanks!

I watched this once, and then when my turbo came i just watched a step, paused, watched the next step, paused, and about 3 hours later I had the turbo out. I feel like it took me so long because A: it was 29 degrees and my fingers were freezing. And B: I discovered alot more bad hoses along the way than the audi you fixed so I was careful to document and make notes of what went where since I had to track down hose parts and knew I wouldnt be putting it back together any time soon. But man this video was easy to understand and walked me perfectly through the process. Thank you sir!

Alway enjoy your DIY videos robert. I started watching when I had an volvo 850 turbo. Now I have 1997 Audi A4. It has 300K and the motor and turbo are rock solid. It was given to me 5 years ago and i have spent $3000 in DIY parts over 5 years $50 a month average. Was well taken care of and runs like a brand new car. One of the few parts i hadn't changed was that coolant hose that you did last before pulling the turbo. The 97's have a hose clamp on the engine, that 10mm bracket bolt, and the turbo banjo connection is a 19mm bolt. All the other vlog instruction I found made it appear as if I had to remove the turbo to replace it. You saved me a lot of work because as usual you very clearly show the parts, and I knew where to look because of your video. Thanks man. I'm a subscriber, and you videos always get a like from me. I haven't seen one yet that I haven't appreciated. btw- one tool that has been a lifesaver for me that I used inthe 19mm bolt is the Husky 100-position (locking flex head ratchet). 100-position ratchets are a must have.

I narrowed my lack of power, random smoke smell in engine compartment, oil wet spot near the turbo intercooler just before the engine's intake manifold and most importantly that missing turbo hissing sound you get when accelerating. I figured my turbo was the culprit, I have a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T but I'll be dammed if it ain't the same dog gone set up if not the same parts that were on that Audi. Well anyway your video came in very handy to concur my suspicion and wanted to say thanks and also thanks for the technical tips!

Thanks Robert this really helped out. Do expect to buy a few hose clamps and replace some hoses, in my case the line from the turbo to the N75 valve had been rubbing against something and almost wore through, 4" long 5mm on one end and 6mm on the other, silicone. I could only get it from the dealer for $50! also the coolant supply line was swollen and soft after 120k, so did that as well. Things get hot down there!

To get the studs out, you can use two of the nuts. Thread them both on the stud, then tighten the two nuts together, then use the lower nut to unscrew the stud. The nuts pinch together and will let you take off the stud. Great video though! Cheers

Hi, my automatic 2007 audi a4 2.0L turbo has some acceleration issues. From a stop the rpm goes up to 4000 rpm before it changes gear from 2nd to 3rd. The rpm just goes high but car is very slow. It struggles going up a slight incline. I have code P0016 and P0459. The car starts and idles fine. Runs good at high speed on highway. Can this be a bad turbo, transmission or timing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not only are those cars over engineered but they have vacuum hoses in some of the most inaccessible places on the car as you have seen. So what most guys do on those is they'll replace all the hoses at once since they all go bad with age. I would've replaced those studs also because they will break at some point, so you may wanna let the owner know about that if he plans on keeping the car. The timing belt & water pump is an even bigger job on this car because the whole front end of the car has to come apart to access it including the bumper

Turbo leaking OIL into the cylinder's will put OIL into ALL of them, NOT ONE. Check the VALVE GUIDES if piston and ring's have been replaced. #1 question first: What is the compression ???? 120-150#'s and ring's are sealing, any that are 15% lower have a issue with the valves or ring's. Do a second compression teat after adding a small amount of oil into the cylinder that is low, if it comes up, the oil has sealed the ring's and you have bad rings, if NOT, the oil went out the leaking valves and seats. Oil will seal ring's but not a bad valve.

ALL turbo internal rotating assembly's when not under operation , the fin's shaft assembly will have play until oil pressure from the engine oil pump fill's the shaft bearing centering them. ALL of them that's why they have a oil pressure line from the pump going to them. Use stud remover's and the stud's won't break. ASE certified and Factory trained for over 25 year's.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 7 лет назад
Huh? Oil is in them even when they are not running.
@gordondowis5925
@gordondowis5925 7 лет назад
When they are not running there will be up and down shaft play as oil pressurized the bearing's they center and are very stable, when you take one off, check and see if "marks" are seen inside the housings that BOTH halves, the fan assembly goes into when assembling the 3 parts of a turbo, If marks are present the bearing are worn out and replace "the center rotating assembly" as long as the housings are NOT damaged.
@gordondowis5925
@gordondowis5925 7 лет назад
NO OIL is present to the bearing when the engines off due to the engine OIL PUMP is not working when the engine is off. DUH??
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 7 лет назад
Come on man, ALL of the oil doesn't drain off, DUH!!! How are you going to check for shaft play when the engine is running? Sure there is a difference between a static turbo that is in good condition and one that is bad. How else can you check the turbo with it in place? You don't pull a turbo just to check it for serviceability. Who does that?
@gordondowis5925
@gordondowis5925 7 лет назад
ROBERT,t, look up THE SPEC'S FOR SHAFT END PLAY FIRST, THEN GO TO A FACTORY SCHOOL AND LEARN ABOUT THE CENTER ROTATING ASSEMBLY OF A TURBO, THE BEARINGS ARE LOOSE UNTIL OIL PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO FILL THE BEARINGS SO "CENTERING" THEM. 25 YEARS OF ASE CERTIFICATION I BELIEVE I'VE BEEN TO OVER 200 FACTORY SCHOOLS.WHO SAID ALL THE OIL DRAINED OUT?, YOU COVER ANY OBJECT WITH OIL A FILM WILL BE LEFT, DUH-AGAIN. STATIC TURBO IS A "DISPLAY FOR MARKET" DUH- A THIRD TIME!!!!!! GO TO SCHOOL AS A DIY DOES NOT KNOW EXCEPT WHAT THEY RUN ACROSS, GET SOME SCHOOLING BOY!!!

my English is weak , but ,1. ! fill with oil ! with a syringe , turbo oil channel , manually turn the turbo a few times before starting the engine, 2. start the engine on the starter without coils, three times so that the oil will fill the channels, 3. start the engine normally 4. in this engine change the oil and filters regularly what 6213 mil ( 10000km) 5. the engine is very good, durable, but you need to take care of it a bit , average fuel consumption 1,85 galon / 62 mil.
