My dad was a mechanic and spent a lot of time on me when I was growing up. I've been doing it my whole life. I've been doing it unsupervised/independently for 27 years.
Mate top video. I am doing the water pump and radiator hoses on my Mazda tribute it has exact same engine and almost exact same setup. I am a little concerned now as I didnt buy the whole pump assembly just the pump so fingers crossed my plastic hasnt failed. I havent had any major issues its just preventative maintenance. Two excelllent tips I got from you were the non tensioner belt issue and the flexible hose clamp. Saved me some frustration there. Anyways thanks for the video, good work.
I think I would have been reluctant to do this job myself without this video tutorial. It was a huge help. Thank you for posting! Wish I could find a video on how to do a coolant flush and fill. I'm unclear on how to burp the system. And apparently there's a valve for the rear heat, too.
you can remove the belt by rolling a flat head screw driver between the top pully and the belt. you have to crank the motor so pull the fuel pump relay in the engine bay fuse box. start the car while clear of engine to make sure it uses all the fuel left in the lines. Once it dies crank it again just to double check that it won't start up when you're removing the belt. then have a buddy crank it a little at a time while you put the screw driver between the belt and pully, kinda lift on the screw driver as it rotates and it will slip on or off easier. Replace fuel pump relay. or just cut the belt to begin with and buy a new one to only have to worry about putting on a belt and to have a new belt on there is smart.
GM Dex-cool is supposed to be a long term coolant that preserves the lining/coating in GM water jackets. Never mind the fact it eats ABS plastic parts. When you use Ethylene Glycol (Green antifreeze) in with it, it just strips that anti-corosive ABS protecting coating. (the crud in your tank.)
The brand we happen to have in the shop is Western Safety. Brian's been using the blue Heavy Duty gloves and I have been using the black Extreme Heavy Duty. I think it's a Harbor Freight brand.... yeah... I think so. :)
Nice to watch the video showing how to changing water pump, because it is Feilong Jiangli's perfeesional area. Feilong Jiangli professional supply water pumps, oil dipsticks, rubber parts.
I see that all the time. Dexcool definately eats the ABS plastic components. It makes them extremely brittle. The intake manifold gaskets are based out of ABS.
4:45 Pry Bar?? "NOOOooo don't do it!!!" laughed a little! (only a little,,, because I did break some plastic on my first one! DEFINITELY wait until the belt is of and pump is loose before trying that one! Thanks somuch for the excellent videos Brian!!!!!
If it's in the budget- yes! If not, no. Lately I've been doing some charity work for people- super low cost stuff, but I don't want to go broke myself.
Hey, look, since the auto manufacturers have to actually provide some rust resistance in the body work nowadays, they gotta find SOMETHING to corrode and fall apart so you have to buy a new vehicle. I'm just amazed they said "Screw it" to metal parts and instead figured out a way to make plastic "rust". :D
great video brian.never have done a new mpv before.after getting hose clamps off I like too use a cotter key tool too loosen the hoses.its a bit pointed but not too sharp.run it between the end of the hose and the fitting....max
Hey, Brian I am Brian too. I just got a 2004 mpv v6 and if this needs with these. At least I know , what the neck is going on. Knowing is half the battle with touchy tight places.
The reason for all that check ABS plastic is emissions regulations - plastic is way lighter than metal so it increases fuel efficiency by a fraction of a percent to meet government regulations.
Ha ha! They don't hate us, they just don't think about us much at all. They have space, performance, time, and cost constraints to worry about and they forget about us.
Have you ever thought of doing engineering for all the companies that does dumb stuff or even engineer your own vehicle so it can be mass produced and at the same time affordable while still being competitive to survive? Great info on the video :)
Howdy Brian and Spanky, Happy New Year to you! You said that the coolant in there eats up the ABS parts, I'm guessing the green cool-aid you're using is 'conventional' silicate based inorganic buffered antifreeze, but have you found that OAT or HOAT based to be better or worse with respect to that? I switched out from a silicate to an OAT (used car) for the supposed extended life, and that it's the factory coolant (Toyota). BTW have you resolved your camera situation? Thank you!
man, at 4:13 I got the sudden thought that automotive mechanics is like heart surgery... the spaces are so tight and the tools required are so specialized and you have to follow a certain procedure or else...
Awesome video, thanks so much for this helpful video. I have the same exact same problem. The same exact stupid part failed on my water pump too. At first, I went to all the parts shop looking for the piece of @#*@# that fail. Nope, dumb stupid engineer won't make or sales just that part. You'll have to buy the whole damn water pump. Damn FORD ("found on road dead"). Just order my part and this video will come in so handy once the part arrive.
Trying to do a pressure test on a mazda mpv, where can i get the adapter that you have in the video for my pressure tester. I've looked around but no one seems to have it. Thanks.
hey brian, you probably already know about this, but my dad got myself and the rest of his guys a really nice rechargable torch (we do alot of crankcase work on large diesels) i should do a tool review really. But i bring this up mainly because it has a UV LED function and its supposed to be for checking leakage from the dye they put in antifreeze. You ever used something like this?
Hi brians, I have same 2006 mpv, i used your procedure to replace the water pump, but my cam shaft pulley which is driving the water pump belt is giving the squeeking noise. Is my cam shaft pulley gone bad? do you know how can i replace it?
Brian or anyone else, is there a safer antifreeze by means of your comment on the plastics not holding up long term due to the factory antifreeze. I currently own a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country and the antifreeze is red in color, dont know much of this either.
Those other videos only replaced the pump mechanism. This video shows the pump housing being replaced, because it broke. The same thing happened to my water pump. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole pump housing.
i can only comment on the camera situation... We purchased a new one! I think that you will see a dramatic difference, especially in things close to the camera! We shall see! :D
My son had a 2004 jeep liberty and it has a bad light socket for the front turn signal. I went to NAPA and was told they do not carry it. I checked on line and can not find it . I heard it was a factory oem item and maybe a junk yard . Do you know where I can get one since I am way away from dealer and junk yards.
Is that a ford engine because it said motorcraft on that water pump belt? Thats stupid engieering with that setup. They dont even bother putting a tensioner on it.
That bottom hose that comes from the water pump that plastic piece can I just buy that are do I have to buy a whole need water pump. Mine literally broke in the same spot. Can I just buy that plastic piece or do I need a whole new water pump
why not just remove the bolts on the pump and pull it out. i never remove the pump housing on any 3.0 (mvp, tribute, 6, escape) i would say try to remove as little as possible. never had a come back that way. great video.. just my 2 cents
You lucky son of a B**** lol I only ask because im a small 800 sq foot shop and work by myself. I worked in a Chevy shop for 10 years and have been working for myself for almost 3 years. Im always asked if I work on imports but as I dont have a repair program I turn down lots of work. Thank you for the reply
I can't wait to get rid of my 2004 V6. TRULY A P.O.S design . . . built in a way to make you think of changing cars. And no more V6s for me, only tiny straight 4s easier to work on . . . most of the times.
sorry you hate Fords so much. I have a 2004 jetta tdi that has that black plastic on the thermostat and a few other parts and they recommend replace every time you service along with replace the one time bolts on everything. Also, Ford doesn't require special fluids only available at the dealer.
