Great video getting ready to change mine bought the same gasket and sealer you mentioned in video. And after removing pan it had a rubber gasket go figure.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
Yup! I've never seen a rubber gasket actually seal up a transmission pan.
@oldgoat1942

I usually insert a few bolts in pan through gasket before I put it up to bolt. I find this to help hold the gasket in place as I use not gasket seal.
@AlfsMustangGarage

That is a very good tactic.

There is a spring and a cap that goes with the filter that you did not look for or forgot to return stall. That is a critical part of the oil filter change.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
Oh ya they don't have those on the early versions of the C4. I know what you're talking about though.

Everything looks good. I always check the torque on the valve body bolts (10lbs) before reinstalling the pan.

Yup, that's a very good idea.

I would tighten in a criss cross fashion so not to warp pan - not go around - but otherwise very informative - Thanks!
@AlfsMustangGarage

Very true. I know you can't really tell from the video but I tighten each bolt in very small increments and take several trips around as to not warp the pan. Thank you for commenting.

Hi Al, your tutorials rock Been going crazy over our 66 C4 trans leak. Tried cork , rubber. Smooth pans . Still leaks. I’m now going to try the permatex, hope and Praying this stops leak. How tight should I go once applied, I was torque to 12 dry , thanks Richard

I tighten mine all based off feal. It's probably 10 ft lbs but watch the gasket. If it starts to squish out, you're too tight. Tighten the bolts in small increments one bolt at a time. Also look closely above the pan to make sure its not something else like the dipstick o-ring or something.

Great video, gonna change the gasket on my bronco. You didn't mention how to clean the pan or tranny. It's probably common knowledge, but not for me. Do I just use a degreaser and paper towels, or sandpaper etc?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 25 дней назад
You can use any sort of cleaner. Dawn dish soap works great. Brake cleaner works great. The end result should be wiping it out with a lint free towel and then a final spray with brake cleaner since it evaporates quickly.

Ok...got my filter changed and pan installed on my 70 c4.. Your video helped alot. One thing I noted was I had 5 qts drain out (normal level on dipstick), so had to put 5 qts back in to get the trans working. I did have the car jacked up pretty high in the front (no lift). Is this normal?
@AlfsMustangGarage

Hi Tx so much. I removed my pan and filter. I then found a spring on the ground where does it go and whats it for ?

Watch this video. Fast forward to the 19:15 mark and you get a good look at that spring, where it goes and how it goes back in 👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vCbo_kkYzKA.html

Hey Alf, I have a spring, cap and ball that was behind the filter. They popped out when taking it out. I believe mine is a later c4. I think it goes ball, then cap, next spring and the filter holds them in place. I just wanted to ask to be sure. Thanks alot, love the videos.

I am in the midst of changing out my pan gasket and filter on my c4. When I pulled the filter, a small spring came out of the trans that was held in by the filter. I did not see that spring addressed in your video. Do I have a different version c4?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
Yes, you have a later model than the one in this video. Watch this video and fast forward to when I'm putting it back together. I was in time-lapse mode but I slowed down the part of me putting the spring back in. I hope that helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vCbo_kkYzKA.html

@@AlfsMustangGarage thanks! I believe my 66 mustang has at least 1970 c4 transmission based on the filter and spring. So I need to get the newer filter. So glad I watched your video (I watch alot of them!). Next question, the filter I will be getting has a cork gasket. Do you put ultra black on a cork gasket, or should I bite the bullet and get the felpro tos 18632 (I do like felpro)?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
I would go with the 18632 which is a composite gasket and a thin layer of ultra black silicone. These old pans tend to warp over the years so I find the silicone helps with that.
@kdog622
@kdog622 Год назад
@@AlfsMustangGarage this is the number I found on my valve body. RF-DOAP-7A101-A-AU. Does this shed any light on the year of my c4? Is there another number I could find on the trans external? Thanks!

Hey Al, I have a 65 Base Mustang coup. It has a C4 3 speed transmission. I have a transmission leak, I have not pulled it yet, but I have replaced, all exterior seals to include the tail extension gasket and the seal. My friend told me it may be the vent tube. I can not find a video on vent tubes. Can you help me.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 года назад
If it's leaking from the vent tube, that usually means it's overfilled or has some internal issues.
@LiamMacInnes
@LiamMacInnes 2 года назад
Do you use the sealant on Cork gaskets as well? Also how tight do you get the pan bolts. The "official" torque spec seems way too high I've already ruined 2 gaskets tightening to the stated 12-16 foot-lbs
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 года назад
Oh ya that's way too tight. I typically do it by feel but it's probably around 8 ft lbs if I had to put a number on it. When using cork, I still put that thin bead of silicone on though.
@LiamMacInnes
@LiamMacInnes 2 года назад
@@AlfsMustangGarage Thanks. Seem to have got it this time. It's even less than 8 ft lbs I think. I just slowly hand tightened until I barely saw the beginnings of a bulge outward but seems to be holding so far no leaks

Very good! Ya I don't really know, I just have a good feel after doing them a lot 🤣
@LiamMacInnes

@@AlfsMustangGarage yep I just wrench on the one so It'll take me some time to build up the feel. Although it is super helpful/reassuring to know it is for sure significantly less than spec. Thanks so much!! Hopefully I don't have to do this too often Hoping to swap out to a manual but think I make too much torque for a T5 :(

If you're putting down some power. Call American Powertrain. They have options for 5 or 6 speeds to handle power.

For the coating of the gasket with the sealer, do you recommend doing that same thing with an oil pan gasket as well?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 4 года назад
Absolutely! I use that same stuff on oil pans, trans pans, valve covers, differential gaskets, all sorts of stuff.
@oldgoat1942
@oldgoat1942 3 года назад
I ever use gasket seal. I always order a rubber seal. Why? Because when you use RTV gasket seal, the next time you remove a oil pan, it sticks to the surface and scraping metal surfaces with a razor scraper may damage it. Plastic ones break. You do not need a sealant if you use a rubber seal and not a cork gasket. Happy motering.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 3 года назад
Ya I never use the rubber ones. They always leak because the 50 plus year old cases and pans have too many imperfections.
@oldgoat1942

@@AlfsMustangGarage You can buy a chrome after market Trans oil pan with a added drain hole from cjpony.com, for $27.00. That is not bad.

@kahvozeinsfang6953
@kahvozeinsfang6953 3 года назад
You don't have to use anything on the pan gasket. In fact, the transmission should be clean and dry. Only use cork gaskets or cork composite. The only thing sealer does is @&$% over the next guy who has to change the oil or whatever. Especially if there is no drain plug.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 3 года назад
There are too many imperfections in these 50 year old cases and pans. If you don't use sealer, they will leak.
