You can also use some exterior grade silicone caulk and run a couple of narrow beads as you put the tread on and screw in place. It helps hold it and when you want to remove that tread piece, just use a blade knife to cut it free as you peel off. You can sometimes peel the silicone off or simply run another bead over it if you cut it close to the original wheel. It holds well enough to itself for this purpose. And, please, use Robertson screws with rounds heads with small, thin flat washers if possible. Robertson pan heads are even better if you can access them.

Another great tip, as always. And thanks, as always! The real wheels on my Ariens self-propelled mower are worn out, and new wheels are not only difficult to find, they're very expensive. They used to sell 'skins' to replace the tread, but I can't find any for sale. One of mine is missing parts of the sidewall and almost ready to fall off completely. This looks like a GREAT solution, and I'm going to try it. Have to admit, I'm not fond of the idea of all those screws, but it does seem to be a practical attachment method. I'll follow this thread for your updates. I've been thinking of using a combination of screws to provide a secure anchor at the seam where the two ends of the tire meet, but using some JB Weld for plastics or maybe silicone sealant throughout the rest of the circumference to hold the replacement tread in place. Or maybe a couple of sets of screws 180 degrees from each other, and glue in the other areas. At any rate, thanks once again for sharing your expertise and creativity in a professional and entertaining fashion.

That’s a great tip, JB. I’ve been doing something similar for years. Based on my observations and the real-world experience of my neighbours, my informed opinion is that manufacturers of self-propelled retail mowers don’t build those machines with longevity in mind. Well-maintained premium branded commercial push-mowers are the preference here. 37 years at the same +1/2 acre property, and into the early days of our third mower, attests to this strategy. Anyways, back to re-treading. I put a couple of strips of knobby bike tire on the bottom of my wife’s ‘landscape loafers’ so that she has good grip and won’t slip should the turf be damp or dewy.
@GarageGear

I've got two spare bike tires of the same tread just laying around behind the barn. This'll work great for my 1980s Sears Craftsman pull-lite mower with bald drive wheels. That's a great idea that I'd never had thought of dude. Now if only I could free up the stuck cable so it'd actually drive itself.

Years ago I had a similar problem with the tread on the rear wheels of my Honda mower (forget the model, but it had the blade brake system that allowed the mower to keep running when you let go of the handle but it stopped the blade super quickly for safety). It was pretty clear after just a little bit of close inspection that the front and rear wheels were exactly the same except the rear wheels had metal gears pressed on the splines on the inside of the plastic wheel hub and they were held on by a few of the splines being melted. By cutting off those melted parts I was able to pry the gears off and press them onto the front wheels and just swap the front and back sets. This bought me another few years before the plastic wheels wore down enough that they started splitting in half, at which time I just bought a new set. Also, at least with that model, the deck wasn't actually completely level when all the wheels were at the same setting, since part of the mulching design was to have the front of the mower a little higher than the back so that the grass got cut incrementally more as the mower moved forward. I discovered that setting the rear wheels one notch higher than the front made the deck more level and resulted in a more even cut of my grass. The two stacked mulching blades still seemed to do a good job so I didn't worry about hurting the mulching performance. Dunno if more recent Honda mowers did the same thing, since this was quite some time ago. I like the idea of basically using "retreads" on the mower, and will keep that in mind if my 80v Kobalt mower wheels ever seem to need more tread. Great idea!!!

I found that if you're cognoscente of the possibility of wearing the tires down when on concrete or pavement and start to push the mower before you lightly engage the wheels so they don't spin and stay on grass otherwise the wheels last forever on my mower as well as the gear system inside the wheel. I have a friend that would grab that handle full throttle on pavement and wore actual holes in his wheels.

@Clearanceman2

I always thought tread on push mowers was kind of a farce like it is on road bicycles. It's on there because people think it needs to be on there. I'm pretty sure the best tread on a walk behind mower would be no tread at all. Now, you may be getting more traction with rubber than with plastic but I don't see how plastic tread makes any difference at all over no plastic tread. In fact, I think a plastic wheel with no tread would grip better than a plastic wheel with plastic tread. Because there is more contact area. I bet if you put smooth rubber around the lawn mower wheel, it would grip better than a tread tire. Because a mower isn't heavy enough to dig down into the dirt like a dirt motorcycle. A different topic but road bikes don't need tread at all. It's on there because people think it should be on there. But asphalt has an inverse tread pattern already and a bicycle has high pressure tires and they are too narrow and they are too slow to hydroplane. The only reason cars and motorcycles have tread is because they are low pressure tires with enough speed and area that they can hydroplane without grooves to direct the water. Road bikes don't have these issues unless you're a pro riding down the side of a mountain. The most traction on the road is going to be a smooth rubber tire on a road bike for the average person. I used to have a bike with completely smooth tires and people assumed I would die but it was fine. It was even fine in the grass, although I wouldn't try it in wet grass. But no road bike tire works well in wet grass anyway.

I’ve been looking into getting a stronger pressure washer because my old electric Husqvarna washer is getting worn out. I plan on replacing it with a Craftsman CS950 with the Briggs and Stratton on it. I just need something that isn’t too expensive but can meet the psi rating I need.
@GarageGear

Hey BCSERK what’s the psi rating on that bad boy?
@Carlos.Rivera

Not bad at all considering how cheap it is. I will consider it because in my lawn I have some inclination and sometimes I lost traction

3M makes a type of plastic weld called PR1500. I used it to repair a nasty sidewall gash on an ATV tire. I wonder if it would work on those plastic wheels.

I wish I thought of this a few times being that I’ve bought a few set of tires. All of them were Hondas though. I think because the frames are much heavier than others.

@@johnhouli3450 self tappers should just go right in. Perhaps try other ones. If you press them into the rubber tire tread they should just go right in.

On a lot of mowers the front and rear wheels are the same. When the back wear, you can just switch them with the fronts. Slicks on the front really don’t matter.

Great idea! I would love to do this to my 20 year old Honda, but I'm concerned the integrity of such old wheels will be compromised once I put a dozen screws in them. I wouldn't want to use glue like you mentioned. I guess I'll wait for some updates to see how yours holds up.
