This is a pretty straightforward video but you might be surprised at how many times I've been asked about this. If you have a different set up on your vehicle check the owners manual for specific information on your make and model and don't forget to check to see if you can just replace the inserts, if you do you could save some money by installing those instead of the entire blade.

In my experience, changing wiper blades will always go 1 of 2 ways: 1. Remove old blade and install new one - 1 minute 2. Spend 10 minutes trying to get the old one off, then give up for 10 minutes. Return to vehicle and try for another 10 minutes, get pissed off and give up. Return after a 10 minute cool down period with a screwdriver and start prying at plastic bits. Break various plastic bits, then try to remove blade again. Get pissed off and become more aggressive with screwdriver. Cut finger after misguided gouging with screwdriver. Go back inside to treat wound and make a bloody mess while trying to open a band aid wrapper with 1 hand while keeping pressure on wound with other.. Now that you're absolutely furious, return to vehicle (wearing gloves now) with needle nose pliers and break all remaining plastic bits. Try to remove blade. Realize that there are metal tabs keeping blade locked in place - proceed to mangle metal tabs with pliers - ta da! Remove old wiper blade and install new one - 1 hour.

You are so right! It's so easy if the clips are open and accessible as in this video. But my new car has three different plastic covers designed to prevent any access whatsoever to the mechanism holding the blade in place. I've already done the "spend 10 minutes" bit twice, and I am no further forward.

I'm not on the screwdriver stage yet. Took a 15 min. break and went back to the car. Old blade still on the car. Watched youtube and went back to the car. Didn't work. Will start over again tomorrow morning.

This morning I tried again, but the dang thing didn't budge. I gave and and drove to Midas. The manager replaced the wipers in less than a minute. No charge because my car is a regular.

Whole wipers typically cost like $20 each, $50 for an OEM part on both sides installed isn't too bad

Probably got them from a flea market or online. Wipers on clearance can be as cheap as 5 bucks.

Where the heck did you get blades for $3.50? I work at an auto parts store, the cheapest ive seen them is $15. usually its $50 for both and we put them on for free

A nice, clear video is a good thing. Replacing the wipers while dealing with Parkinson's adds a lot of frustration for me, and comedy for others. At least now I should be able to do it with a minimum of both frustration and laughs.

Thank you Eric! I like your method of running the wipers until they are pointing up. When I change wiper blades, I use an old T-shirt or a cleaning rag. After I remove the first wiper, I rest the wiper arm against the windshield with the T-shirt for padding. This way I don't have to worry about the wiper arm smacking into the windshield! Here's a helpful thing for everyone to know! On a cold winter day, if you start the car, turn on the windshield wipers and they don't move because they are frozen in place, then you need to get out and break those wipers free! Otherwise the wipers will still be trying to finish their sweep, even though you turned them off. And you will likely burn out your windshield wiper motor. I learned this from Bill Osborne, my high school buddy. This happened to Bill's mom. Her windshield wipers were frozen, so she drove to work with the defroster on high, but the windshield wipers were still trying to move. That burned out her windshield wiper motor. So Bill replaced the windshield wiper motor for her. Happy New Year Everyone!

I've seen cars that automatically re-park the blades even after the key is off. There is a "wiper change" setting that is accessible on these cars. This is where the owner's manual, as you pointed out, is invaluable.

Thanks for this! I have to add one tip for extreme newbies like me: there may be a protective covering on your new wiper blade, which needs to be removed. I ACTUALLY didn't NOTICE and it took me half a day to figure out why my brand new, top of the line wiper was totally ineffective. Go ahead and laugh at me: i did too! But thanks for the video, it did the trick

Tip: Wipers that don't have adequate pressure against the windshield won't wipe very well. This happens because age has weakened the spring in the wiper arm. Instead of buying new arms you can save money by buying shorter wiper blades. Less surface area means more pressure against the glass. Try a blade about 3" shorter than the original blade.

It releases easily, but it won't come up over the hook. You went too fast with that second step. How do you jiggle it so that it clears the same hook that's supposed to keep it in place? Stupid design. Do I need to cut the damn thing off? I've been at this now for an hour. There's no clearance to slide it up and off on a 2014 Altima.

I bought some new wiper blades a little while ago, but they refuse to snap into place. Feels like you could lift the truck by the blades without them snapping. They don't come off, but they do "relax" down on the hook a little bit. The blades did come with another clip which might be right for my application, but the ones that came on the blades were RIVETED in place, so I don't know how Bosch thought the customer was supposed to use the alternate clip. Very strange.

hey im a little experienced in this field i am an alignment mechanic, it sounds like it could be a few different things. i would have my front end checked because you may have loose or worn parts. and if the parts are not bad. i would have my car thrown up on an alignment rack and have it checked out. just my personal opinion. also while they are checkin the front end have the cars tires re balanced,

hi Eric..how r u..?? m having trouble with my 2000 acura tl front tyres...they are worn from outer edges..n in an irregular pattern.. like half of the tire is less worn and other half is getting worse..its on both the tires...n there is also a shaking steering wheel at the speed of 100 kmph..also there is some gargling sound at the tone on which the steering shakes..it shakes very little..one can feel light vibration on his legs while driving...n also its pulling towards right side...

Use whitening tooth paste to clean up foggy headlights...I take a piece of paper towel and a tube of whitening toothpaste and go to my car. Take the tooth paste, and put little dots (1/4 inch I guess) around your headlight...just enough so that when you spread it around with the paper towel, it'll cover the whole thing. Rub it around, then let it set for 5 minutes. Finally, take another piece of paper towel...add water rub it a little more. Then rinse. Your welcome :)

lol I just changed mine today when I had the tires rotated and oil changed. I remember the first time I changed my wiper blades, I was in a do it yourself car wash vacuuming my car out right before my first date. It took me almost 10 minutes.. then once I figured it out, I was like do'h! thats simple. :P

the actual blade that does the wiping, yes..and of course its easier to replace the whole lot, but then you have to actually source the part and it would be alot more expensive than buying the universal blades, cutting them down to your own size and fitting them without any troublr..all for about $10

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but don't operate the wiper blades when they are in the 'replacement' position with the hood up - I guarantee it will scratch the paint on the windscreen edge. You only make this mistake once!

Honestly I can do just about everything else in the basic maintaince on my car, I change my own oil, wash, wax, spark plugs, rotate my tires... I even replaced my oil cooler gasket. etc... can't change windshield wipers to save my life.

Also, make sure to use WHITENING tooth paste...since whitening toothpaste has uh "grit" I guess. I promise you that it works...and it won't cost you nothing to try. Just put some toothpaste and rub then rinse.

I've found that auto parts stores know the sizes for your car anyway. The expensive rain-x ones are actually worth the money. No noise, no streaking, but I don't know about how long they'll last.

Actually no. Eric said never operate the wipers when you have taken the blades off. This is about operating the wipers when the hood is up, which will scratch off the paint on the hood.

He said your experience will vary. Nearly every wiper blade box has instructions on the back as well, usually with some small diagram.

Wipe and clean your blades from time to time. I use meths, do not use washing up liquid or anything remotely oily.

Its supposed to be that way, they are staggered so that they both clean off an arc that the other wiper missed

Like the post below, only I started with a knife, but put it way knowing I would do more damage to myself than the windshield wiper. Next came the screw driver and that was useless. watched a video where the guy in neat uniform went zip, zap, click, done. (Obviously had new blades previously installed to show off with.) I think evil elves welded mine on in the night. But! This video does have a new trick, use wiper motor to put blades up 90 degrees and I really liked it when he gave the old blade a sold whack to knock them off. I'm going to whack my old blades so even if i don't get them off, I'll feel better. Wish me luck. --- It worked! Hit the blade and work it down, thank you Eric da car dude..

Great Video! Tips - you can lookup correct size and attachment without dealing with the parts stores at places like Wipers123 online. Ensures correct lengths and attachment. You get them in about 3 days. Also another tip - put a thick bath towel on the windshield so if the arm does snap down, you won't crack your glass!!

Walked back to the car, got the old blade off n 10 seconds, put the new blade on in 5 seconds,! I turned out that my set-up must be different… I do not know why? I did not push the tap up I had to pull it out and the blade came right off…. I checked it out on both blades and even took them on/off a few times. Pull the tab out and released the ‘pin’ from the slot in the metal wiper arm. I have no idea why my 2003 Monte Carlo SS would be different than any car in these videos. I even checked to make sure it is on there solid and will not fly away. No problems. Maybe I should go fro a drive and check it out.

Eric 1st step at 0:21 & 2:00 is to put a folded wet towel across windshield glass (in case half way thru project) tip of arm slams on glass (shattering it!! ) . Better be safe than sorry

Thanks for suggesting to tighten a wiper arm that is not moving correctly. My husband's driver side wiper is skipping, no matter what type of wiper blades he uses. I'll bet you anything it needs to be tightened!! LOL!!

Thanks..finally got the steps in line....blade out at 45 degrees...push that lil clip down and hold it best you can in the one hand, ... then bumping the blade arm helps dislodge it...don't engage brain....done...put new ones on .....need alcohol to recover from the first futile attempts....learning to tie my shoelaces next.

It easier having them up. But I usually use my index finger on the left side of the hook. And the other finger next to it on the right side. Now pull , pretty simple. 2.2 👍

If your wiper is hard to get off, and you keep pressing the tab to release and it won't. Get a medium slotted screw driver, and put it on the release tab and press lightly and pull. It should come off pretty easy. Don't tug on the blade. The release tabs get mushy being on so long. You are now a professional blade remover.

takes less than an hour labor install this procedure (usually one person) can do this job with only a pliers, wire cutters, and some kind of clamp. tape will work too but a c-clamp is ideal to remove the wiper from the razmatron fittings.

With a Honda Element I found out the hard way it is better to leave the wipers in the down position. It is main an issue with the passenger side.

The wiper arm is the assembly that holds the blades. He changed the blades.

I’m at step 2+. Back in to look at 15 more videos. I did get the driver’s side off after a 15 minute battle. The new blade went on in 1 minute. Back to the passenger side I go,! Grrrrr!

Just to be safe, for the less experienced at this, better put corrugated cardboard or a coat or thick or folded towel or anything to prevent the bare arm slamming down on the glass or scratching the windshield.

I was going to say the drivers side wiper arm was loose but then you did it anyway :P ps. i wouldnt leave the wiper arm up cause as you mentioned it can ping back, i have a mate who works for aston martin and he did that and cracked a windscreen..... just gently put it back on the windscreen and it wont do anything to the glass.
