Ouch... you oriented the spanner incorrectly (1:37) - The lower jaw doesn't deal with torque very well in that direction ;)

Great video as always, but might I suggest a follow up video dealing with drivetrain capacity and derailleur interaction for those people out there putting together custom drive trains or replacing parts of the drivetrain that will increase or decrease the drivetrain capacity, as I think it would be helpful.

At what point do you decide to take it to the shop? I broke a spoke on the rear wheel and was about to attempt to replace it by myself. The shop told me they would replace the spoke and true the wheel all for less than $25. It was a no brainer - let the professional do the job.
@gabrielmesaric253

+David Wallace you have all the tutorials here on youtube. it takes them 5 min to do that and they charge it to much.

+gabriel mesaric what if you don't have a truing stand? they cost a fair bit, at least $35/40
@wallacedavidg
@wallacedavidg 8 лет назад
+gabriel mesaric It wasn't the complexity of the job. I realized I'd have to remove the cassette to retread the spoke. I needed a few tools and at that point I went for the easy and less expensive solution with the bonus of getting the wheel trued correctly.
@dingusmagee3326
@dingusmagee3326 8 лет назад
+David Wallace replacing a spoke can seem daunting at first, but trust me, after you learn the basics it is quite easy. My first suggestion would be buying a very basic comprehensive tool kit, this will come with several bicycle specific tools that will allow you to do many repairs yourself that you would otherwise pay exorbitant shop fees for and have to wait for the shop to perform. In my case, there is at least a 48hr turn around for something as basic as replacing a spoke and truing a wheel. The Spin Doctor basic tool kit is on sale at Performance Bike for $50, which would pay for itself rather quickly. This will include the cassette lockring socket and chain whip that you see in this video. It also includes a bottom bracket wrench, a chain breaker, a spoke wrench, and various other useful tools. Another thing you should always have in your tool kit, is several spokes in the length required for your wheels. Breaking spokes is a common occurrence, and if you have to pay $25 each time you break one that will add up very quick. You can buy these online for ~$1-2 each. Also, if you want to keep your wheels straight for longer, just check your wheel for loose spokes every 2-3 rides. If any spoke feels noticeably looser than the others, just give them a couple turns to even the tension out. It seems like a no brainer, but it really helps. So for less than $60, you can have all the tools and parts you need to avoid having to wait for a shop to perform such trivial repairs. Sorry for the long winded reply, but I hope this helps.

+Dingus “dingusmagee” Magee I was lucky in one regard. I was able to pick up the wheel in about 4 hours. The only tool I don't have is the one to remove the cassette. I was actually looking forward to truing the wheel. With the broken spoke the rear wheel had about 0.5 in (1.27 cm) lateral deflection and close to zero radial deflection. While I don't have a wheel truing guide I thought I could get it pretty close 1/16 in (0.15 cm) by taking my time. I enjoy working on my bike (Trek Fuel EX8) and I think the GMBN tutorials are very useful.

I guess the only other point to make is that some brands of alloy free hub splines can get badly indented by the sprockets, especially the cheaper, non - ganged sprockets. They'll need more than a tap to get off. I found plastic tyre levers work well to prize them off without damage. I then bought a better cassette!

I only got take my old cassette off and put on a new back wheel, It's a Carrera hellcat lmt edition with an added Bafang bbs02, Great motor by the way, With a 20 amp battery I get over 100 miles, Anyways it's my first time doing a cassette removal I'm dreading doing the job, Waiting for Amazon to deliver the wheel due any minute now, I got a 1600watt electric scooter, Pretty fast but I gets attention with it, Down to it being a monster scooter, Looks beefy, So I really don't want it taken off me by certain authorities, Lol, They kool tho, Ive only had one police man stress me about the scooter, They told me to stay on the pavements, Plus if you on the road with a scooter that's say a kaboo, You will get it taken off you.... So I need to get my bike up an running, I suffer CPTSD so public transport is a no go for me, I can't do my motor bike lessons coz of the CPTSD I suffer from I understand why tho, So my only option is electric bike, Plus my brother passed away recently and the only way of me getting to the crem is by the E-bike as distance is pretty far, But a 20amp battery on a bbs02 motor will get you over 100 miles if rode sensibly, Amazing motor... My E-bike is on my channel if you want to check it, But yeah I'm worried I'm going to F things up removing the cassette to put on a new wheel, Now I'm wishing I spent a bit extra an bought the cassette on the wheel, Just was pretty hard to find at a reasonable price, So much for black Friday, Everything still is expensive even on a so called black Friday, I thought it was 50% off everything, lol, I have not seen 50% off things, 30 yeah but not 50%, Rant over lol, I will follow this video and pray the cassette goes on the new wheel with no problems...... Wish me luck lol.......

That's the wrong way to use an adjustable wrench. You should always apply pressure on the fixed jaw. Never the movable jaw. That's the quickest way to stuff your tool or worse, break the movable jaw clean off.

How did you measure the 40nm? I don't understand this neuter metres shit...
@moisavictor
@moisavictor 8 лет назад
+Spazamazz newton meter (Nm) is a measure of torque or in this case how tight you should tighten that specific nut. this is starting to become important in bikes because some parts do need a very specific amount of force when you tighten the bolt. for example if you want to mount a carbon handlebar you can crack it if you apply to much force when tightening the bolts.
@Spazamazz
@Spazamazz 8 лет назад
victor moisa Thanks for the info, how do i measure nm?
@moisavictor
@moisavictor 8 лет назад
With a torque wrench but they can get very expensive.
@klarkolofsson
@klarkolofsson 8 лет назад
+Spazamazz you could by a torque wrench set to 5 Nm, cheap and can be used where it most counts: seatpost (clamp) and stem!
@massspike
@massspike 8 лет назад
+Spazamazz 40nm is equal to about 360 inch-pounds (sorry for having to switch to imperial but it makes it easier to explain). So if you had a 12 inch wrench (lever) using it to lift 30 pounds (e.g. equivalent to one armed lifting your bike) it is 40nm (6-inch >> 60 pounds, etc.). Either that or just snug the cassette lock ring up by hand and then give it a 1/4 turn with your wrench.

There are better maintenance videos out there. MBR are great, also Art's Cyclery as they are clearly presented and very logical in their presentation. You won't get the obvious pretence sound of tightening a lock nut to 40nm, you'll get a guy actually tightening it with a torque wrench.

Is it normal for the nut cap to "strip" upon tightening? After I had put the cassette back together and put barely any force upon tightening and it seems that it makes a gritty sound and then with a touch more face spins back to loose. Thinking the last shop that did the repair stripped it and now I am going to be stuck replacing the red cap piece??? shimano xt This is my 1st time doing the repair and it seems simple/straight forward. Will I even be able to buy a new cap piece without an entire cassette etc? super whack
