We want your thoughts and comments. What kind of project are you working on? What Mustang are you daily driving?
Alf's Mustang Garage is not responsible for any mechanical or technical error that you may encounter when working on your own car. You are responsible for your own quality control and your own proper repairs.
Today at Alf's Mustang Garage, we remove the old clock that doesn't work out of the instrument cluster and replace it with a mini tachometer. These tachs bolt right in without any modification. Its a very nice sleak upgrade to your old 67 to make that clock location usefull.

How about changing the clock for an oil pressure gauge on 67 with the oil warning light. Any recommendation on a oil pressure gage that will fit the clock opening?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
I'm afraid I do not have any recommendations for something like this. You already have an oil pressure gauge in the dash. What you could do if you wanted the warning light is run a second oil pressure sender that runs operates a warning light in the event of oil pressure loss. Then you could mount that warning light to any location of your choice.

I'm trying to install a tachometer on my 66 mustang with a 289. I followed the instruction, however my tachometer needle moved all over the place any ideas,

Is your tachometer adjustable for a 6 or 8 cylinder engine? If so, is it set to 8 cylinders?

nice video, i just installed one on my 68 cougar, I'm runing an MSD 6A , hooked it up according to the instructions but my tach did the same thing yours did, it was not smooth and it looks like it sticks? any ideas thanks

Thank you! I thought my tach was smooth. I'm assuming with the frame rates of the video, it may not look smooth. I'm not sure, you could probably just double back and check all your connections.

Hi, I have just instaled same mini tacho to my Coupe 1967 with 289 C, followed by your instructions. It went perfect, finished in 30min. 👍 What idle rpm do you suggest (warm up engine). Thanks and best regards from Slovenia
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
Very cool! Glad to hear it went smooth. I like my warm up (fast idle) about 1100-1200 and then my curb idle (normal idle) at 700-800 depending on other conditions.

What would be the primary difference with doing this on a 68 instrument cluster, with a harness built for no-tach? Also, if I actually did have a GT based wiring harness but had this type of mini-tach, does this method even work? Would a GT harness basically require a completely different tach? (basically an original GT tach). I ask because I have two things going on, 1) I actually have an instrument cluster with a 'retrogauge' mini-tach similar to the one in this vid which was never wired up, and 2) I need to replace my main wiring harness on my 1968 mustang. So, I'd like to know if I should go with a standard wiring harness (no tach), or go with a GT harness which has the wiring for an in-series ignition (pink resistor wire to coil, through tach). I hope this is clear.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 года назад
So on a 68 cluster, there shouldn't be any difference when it comes to mounting and installing. Now as far as wiring this thing up, its going to be a 3 wire tach so it doesn't wire in like those original 2 wire tachs that are in series with the ignition wire. So basically you would probably want to go with the standard wiring (no tach) because this type of unit gets it feed from the negative side of the coil and doesn't wire in with the ignition wire.

Hey! How does the Tachometer gets the RPM info from? Do I just ground it, connect to a switch and call it a day or did I miss something?
@AlfsMustangGarage

Yes you missed the part where I wired it up. Start watching from the 5:00 mark.

Another great video! Keep them coming, they are so helpful. I’ve ordered the same mini tach for my coupe. Followed your steps up to the green wire part. My car has a MSD Blaster pn 8207. Do I take the green wire to the negative on there or does it go into the inductive pick up on the coil?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
I'm glad you find them helpful. I believe you should just connect to the negative side of that coil. Are you running an ignition control box that has a tach input?
@whiskeyfe
@whiskeyfe Год назад
@@AlfsMustangGarage got it to the negative of the coil now. Works but it’s not smooth, the needle responds to the accelerator but sporadic and with a delay. What does that tell me? I’ll go out and say that I’m not at all familiar with ignition systems but mine doesn’t look like it has an ignition control box…?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Год назад
Does that tach have a switch to make it work for a 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder?

Have you contacted Rocketman's yet? What type of ignition system are you running? The tach has 3 wires right? Have you double checked all your connections?
@theoutlaw2395
@theoutlaw2395 2 года назад
Nice tach. I've bought from Rocketman before. He did a 3 wire conversion to my factory tach. He makes good stuff. I'm surprised you didn't tap switched power off the Constant Voltage Regulator. I hate using those wire splice taps (only in an emergency.) Do you know if someone can convert the OEM cable speedometer to pulse generation? I've done the Autometer gauge conversion, but I still like the OEM dash gauge look.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 года назад
Oh ya he makes great stuff. I was very happy with the tach on this. You're probably right, I could have tapped off that and been less intrusive. So I've installed a a pulse generator sensor in place of the speedometer gear. And then that wires to the back of the replacement speedometer that came with the kit. So it's essentially a speed sensor and the unit has to be calibrated. Is that what you're asking for? Go to www.classicinstruments.com thats where I got one to install in a 65 once.
@theoutlaw2395
@theoutlaw2395 2 года назад
@@AlfsMustangGarage I was asking about making the speedometer pulse generator, either by making an adapter to put on the cable input or gutting out the factory speedo and putting in new electrical guts.
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage 2 года назад
Ya I haven't looked into it too much. The one I'm aware of is just swapping out the gauge with an entirely different gauge, ditching the cable, and installing the speed sensor in the trans.
