Your dryer relies on a (typically 30-amp) power supply outlet, but if the outlet was installed a long time ago, you may want to check it for damage, corrosion or other deterioration. It's a good idea to replace it with a new one and this video takes you through the process from my own DIY perspective.

Good video, but since you have a three conductor plus ground cable, per the NEC you are required to install a 4 prong receptacle and 4 wire cord, following the instructions on the dryer to remove the strap or wire that bonds the chassis to neutral. The 3 prong receptacle and cord is still permitted under the exception where the supply wiring had only three wires, whether that be SEU cable with two hots and a bare neutral, very old NM with a black. red and white with no ground, or two wire plus ground NM, and the practice of grounding the chassis to neutral was banned as of the 1996 NEC because it was less safe than a modern 4 wire setup with an insulated neutral and separate ground, for if the neutral were to open, corrode or otherwise develop a high resistance (aluminum wiring is notorious for such issues) the chassis can be energized to as much as 120V relative to ground, and combined with a damp basement floor, washing machine & perhaps laundry sink nearby, the dryer could be the last thing you ever touch. Be safe and follow the most recent NEC, the several hundreds of pages in a NEC code book weren't written just for the fun of it.

You used the neutral as a ground, and then grounded the box with the ground. Strange way to do it. Also, using a multimeter to check both that the power is off, and that the power is the correct voltage after you connect it would be the proper way to do it.

Your picture shows you swapping from a three prong to a four prong. This video was not it.

Sorry Hector, this was just a replacement of a 3-prong plug. The approach is similar but you'd have an extra wire to connect on the 4-prong.

Unless your dryer is more than 30 years old, you should have done it correctly and installed a 4 wire receptacle and changed the cord to 4 wire. Putting the ground under that screw is not legal either.

Good point Kevin! This one is pretty old but I believe our city codes state that if the house is old you can use the 3-wire setup. This house was built in 1901.

@@DIYMaistor You are probably correct on the city code. Although correct, the electrical system was upgraded and installed much later. Then modified again. The point of NEC is life safety. Since the NM cable is orange, that means it was installed within the last ten years. Based on the fact the cable is a 4 conductor cable, you are required to use 4 wire receptacle and 4 wire cord per NEC. 3 wire is an exception for electrical systems installed prior to 1990 NEC. Always be safe, the life you save may be your own. Respectfully, Kevin

@@KevinCoop1 That make sense and thank you for the additional information. So technically, I don't need to replace the orange cable itself, just swap the plug to a 4 and a new 4-prong dryer cord?

@@DIYMaistor Correct. You must rewire the cord connections as shown on the back of the dryer to separate the neutral from ground. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
