Best advice in this video is using the angle grinder. Although I found that a 120 grit flap disc worked better for me than an actual grinding wheel. My end cuts turned out looking absolutely perfect. Thanks for that little tidbit.

Well done Doug, awesome videos...we have somethings in common (for one, our names :). Most of my rail work (up in NJ) I do in my shop away from customers prying eyes if practical. I tell all my customers the price is higher if they watch, LOL. I've made wooden racks, each for holding 6 rubbers with backs facing up for gluing. After gluing and placing rubber, I then use a Formica roller for rolling the rubber in lieu of a mallet. When cutting the rubber and facings, I dip the knife/blades in real hot water just prior to each cut of rubber or facing, cuts like a hot knife through butter. I do however use a boat load of blades, one per rail. The blades I use are dbl. sided carpet blades, scary sharp, but IMO, better than a singe edge or a utility blade. Dull knives/blades are what will cut you from having to force um and then slipping. I Use um to cut the cloth also. No taring the cloth like some guys do. P.S. if not brushing on the Barge or contact cement as I do for a single table, I'll spray on a couple coats of spray grade Formica glue if I have several sets of rails to glue up. The racks shield over spray...the rails I stack and mask...otherwise not worth the time cleaning the sprayer for only a couple tables. I noticed you flushing off the feather strip to the wood of the rail before flipping it over to staple. Not saying it's wrong, I'll fold the cloth over the feather strip and then block it so cloth top side is flush to the finished side of the rail...especially on a Formica covered rail like a Gold Crown has. One thing I do if needed, I cover the entire feather strip with masking tape if I feel they are loose or thinner cloth is being used compared to original. Staplers I use, Duo-Fast Capet staplers, wide crown for rail work, narrow crown for facings and drop pockets. For glue removal I use Goof-Off if needed. Nari an issue in some 25 yrs. A grinder is a great idea, going to give that a try. I'll try anything once...Keep up the great videos.

I appreciate the lesson. I am a service only company in the Atlanta area. I have been doing billiards myself for over 25 years. I love the grinder on the wood. I do so many Leisure Bay tables that go bad after 10 years. And the glue they use seems like super glue. So tough. I myself have been using Dap for so long. Works pretty good for me. I notice some companies lathe their c grove off to make the rail flat and then proceed to put standard k66 cushions on them. To me that makes the response too spongey. A tip that might be easier on some is to put your blade in alcohol and shake some on the knife. Makes it cut like warm butter. Your method is great. Now delete this video before we all go out of business. Lol. Just playing. Thanks

Watched several of your videos, very good workmanship. Between 11 and 20 minutes of this video you cut the cushions creating the pocket angles using the existing wood rail angles as a reference. My home table is a 8 foot Brunswick Camden 2 with 5.25 pocket openings and angles between 146 and 149 degrees. My concern is the pockets won't accept hard fast balls, just rattle and out. Researched and discovered the recommended angles should be around 141 degrees. My plan is to grinding some 1/4 inch facings at an angle to get closer to 140 degrees.
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 2 года назад
Seems like that should work. You definitely want them good and straight though. Good luck with it!
@larryvietvet543

@@CreativeRestorations Update, Huge project took several days. Found several problems with the previous workmanship. The new rail cushions were cut at a sharper angle than the rails. The cushion facings were stapled in. Didn't see you stapling the facings. Added a wedge of facing material to make up for the erratic cushion angles. I know the cushions should have been replaced. Used a medium coarse file to make sure the surface was flat. All my corner pocket angles are 142 degrees now. Your advice helped immensely, Thank You. 🎱

Hi, sir, you are the best billiard installation guy I met on RU-vid, your videos are pretty impressive. From your over 30 years pool table experiences, if you install a very cheap foldable pool table with the top class rubber, like the standard used as pro tournament, do you think that table's cushions could also perform very well bouncing like a pro's grade table?? actually, I hv a just $500 MDF based pool table with very bad rubber response, I just want to know if something like this could possible to be upgraded. thanks a lot.

Great tutorial, see things to correct this time (did it 15 years ago). Do you recommend neoprene facing at all to tighten the pocket ? Thanks again
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 4 года назад
If you want to "tighten" the pockets, you can go with additional rail facings. The unbacked rail facings come in two different thicknesses: 3mm and 5mm. So, going with double-stacked 5mm rail facings would tighten the pockets by about 3/8". You can use any combination of the two sizes to get your desired pocket width.

Great step-by-step tutorial, thank you! A few questions. (1) what pad/grit do you use on the grinder? (2) I just bought an 8ft Kasson Gentry table and need to do the rails - it's K-66 - do you have any recommendations for which rubber to get? I'm currently looking at the Pro-form and Championship Tour edition - Artemis seems like overkill for this table, especially when the main players will be me, my 15yo son and his friends. Thanks!
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
I just use a standard grinding wheel on the grinder. However, you may want to use 60 grit sandpaper with a sanding block. Using a grinder on the wood takes a bit of finesse. As for the rubber, if it's K-66, I would suggest either the Championship MBS rubber or their Tour Edition rubber. Both can be purchased through our website. MBS Rubber: www.billiardsofneworleans.com/store/MBS-Group-Cushion-Rubber-p133130969 Tour Edition Rubber: www.billiardsofneworleans.com/store/Championship-Tour-Edition-Cushion-Rubber-p133130974 I will say this... Artemis rubber (and perhaps the Tour Edition rubber) is overkill for anyone other than the most serious of pool players. The Championship MBS is great rubber. I use it 99% of the time.

I have a Brunswick Gold Crown 4. I am going to install new K-55 cushions and want to tighten the pockets. Is it better to cut rail extensions and add them ? That way I could just use a 3mm facing. It would also make the cushions more accurate closer to the pocket openings. What say you?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
You can do that (add wood extensions to the ends of the rails). But, make sure that this is something you're going to be happy with long-term. If, for whatever reason, you're not happy with having the pockets tighter in the future, it's a LOT harder to remove wood that's been glued on with wood glue than it is to remove rail facings glued on with Barge Cement. My philosophy is to always err on the side of caution. Also, if you were to sell the table in the future, who's to say that all potential buyers are going to want a table that's been permanently altered? If it were me, I would double-stack the rail facings.

Thank you for this video. I have watch many of them. I am going to change the cloth on my Olhausen soon. I want to tighten the pockets to 4.5". I am not happy with the tech from the only local table reseller. He put several layers of shims on the end of the rails. This led to the corners being rounded up to an inch from the opening.Not only are the corners rounded the pocket shoulders are also not flat and more bouncy. I am hoping I can add a wooden shim, probably made from maple, and then put the 3 mill shim on. Then cutting the new cushion to the line of the maple shim. Do you think that would cause other issues? I am also wanting to put the most correct staple in. I have read that I want to use 1/4" 1/2" crown staples but what gauge do you recommend? One more thing, can you recommend anything to soften the back of the plastic pockets? Would bonding leather to the plastic hold up?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
I'd be cautions about adding wood to the pocket ends of the rails. I'm not saying it can't be done. It can. However, it's important to keep the geometry correct. Also, while you can add additional rail facings to tighten the pockets, adding too many will also change how the ball reacts when it strikes the rail (in the pocket). The correct way to do it would, indeed, be to add additional wood first and then use a single rail facing over that. Again, make sure you don't change the geometry. You will also want to make sure that the glue that you use isn't so hard and brittle that it can't withstand the repeated impacts. So, CA glue (Super Glue) is out of the question. A better option would be Tightbond II. Now, as for the wood that you go to use... More than likely, your rails are made out of either Oak, Mahogany, or Poplar. I would suggest you go with the same species of wood that your rails are made from to insure no difference in the way the ball rebounds. As for staples, I never recommend using 1/4" crown staples. Those are generally used in the construction of case goods. They really aren't made for upholstery work. Not to mention, most 1/4" crown staples also have a heat activated glue on the legs of the staples. This makes them next to impossible to remove later. They usually end up breaking off. I personally use a Senco pneumatic upholstery stapler. It's surprisingly inexpensive. Here's the Amazon link if you want to get one yourself (they come in handy for all kinds of projects): amzn.to/2HQuWCH This is a 3/8" crown stapler that (if I'm not mistaken) is 23 gauge. I've been using either this gun or the previous model for almost 20 years! They seem to hold up FOREVER! Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!
@melf7834
@melf7834 3 года назад
@@CreativeRestorations It does help. The type of crown staple I was mentioning was a 1/2 crown with a 1/4" depth. I will use the link to order a stapler. What depth of staple do you recommend for rails and the table cloth? The rails are Poplar. the reason I was thinking of maple is because I have lots. It's the same tone and the side grain facing of the Maple might be more similar to the end grain of the Poplar. I think machining it that way makes more sense than trying to machine end grain shims. I have lots of Tightbond II, I buy it by the gallon. I read the description on the "Billiards of New Orleans" site. I don't think I can buy leather pockets for my table. That's why I was asking about bonding a thin piece of leather to the back of the pocket. Wish you were closer to the Pacific Northwest. Thank you for your time. I am glad that I found your videos but I wish I would have found yours sooner.

Thanks for all the videos, I just purchased a used Rozel gold cup 9 foot table . When I hit the cue ball with top spin in to side side rails I get a bounce , is that normal for every table out there or should I replace the rails?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations Год назад
It can be normal or it might not be normal. It really depends on how hard you're hitting the ball and how much top spin you're putting on it. When you put top spin on it, there's a certain amount of friction and forward momentum that's going to cause the ball to want to "climb" the rail. There are even trick shots that utilize this principle. Check your nose height of your rubber. If it's between 1-3/8" and 1-7/16", then, your table is correct. Your issue would, indeed, be a result of the top spin and speed. If it's outside of that range (specifically, lower than 1-3/8"), either you have the wrong rubber profile installed on your table or your rubber is installed incorrectly.

How long do you advise to let the contact cement set up before setting the two pieces (rubber to the wood) together

That kinda depends on which glue you use. I use the regular Barge Cement (as opposed to the Barge Infinity Cement). Usually, I'll let it tack up anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours. I know the "open time" on the Infinity Cement is less though.

The factory has special Formica made for them that has the diamonds already inlaid (or, rather, made into the Formica). You can go to Home Depot and buy Formica countertop material and use that. You can also do a Google search for wood grain Formica. Now, all of the Formica that you come across is going to be flat sheet. So, you'll have to cut it oversize, heat it and form it to the curve of the rail, glue it (and I would recommend Barge Cement), come back and trim it with a flush-cutting laminate trimmer on a router, and then, re-inlay your sights. You can get sights in 7/16" and 1/2" diameter from www.poolndarts.com (Meuller Sporting Goods). You would need to use a Forstner bit to drill a nice, clean hole. And 7/16" Forstner bits are hard to find. So, if you want to make it a little easier on yourself, go with the 1/2" sights. You can use either Titebond II or Super Glue to adhere the sights. When you're drilling the recesses for the sights, you want to go deep enough so that the whole sight sits flush with the top of the Formica. But, not so deep that the sight sits below. And, you have to leave room for the glue to go somewhere under the sight. Hope this helps. Doug

What do you think of tanners Bond Tandy sells? They told me it is made by barge but is their new blue formula I believe. They say it has the same bond as the yellow barge can. The reason it’s made without a certain chemical so it can be sold in California. They sell it in an 8oz which would probably be the right size for one time use.
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
"Tanner's Bond" is not made by Barge. It's just run-of-the-mill contact cement. Also, I just checked out Tandy's website and it specifically says that Tanner's Bond cannot be sold in California. So, I wouldn't recommend it. A MUCH better option would be Barge Infinity Cement. Since it has no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) it is California compliant. And, it provides excellent adhesion properties. The down-side to it is the low "open time". I.E., once it dries and the pieces are ready to be stuck together, you don't have anywhere near as much time to get it done. This glue is routinely used to adhere rubber to leather in the production of sneakers and other types of shoes. So, I'm confident it will work well for adhering rubber to wood. Applying a second coat would also be additional insurance! You can find Barge's Infinity Bond at: amzn.to/3k8xKcv

@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
There might be. I've never heard of one though. I have gone to the BCA show and seen where manufacturers will set up what looks like a ramp that they release the ball from. The ball is released from a specific height and then you would count the number of rails the ball bounces off of and see where the ball finally stops. Apart from that system, I can't think of any other way of testing. Usually, I judge by feeling the rubber.

is there a difference in the rubber railings? I see red vs. blue? and the felt? which is best?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 2 года назад
The color of the rubber isn't a determining factor and it doesn't indicate good or bad. There is, however, a difference between rubber profiles. If you use the wrong profile rubber on your table, it will engage the balls either high or low. If the nose height is too high (and this is determined both by the angle cut on the rail itself and the angle of the rubber), the ball rebound won't be as "lively". It will respond the same way a dead rail would because it's actually driving the ball into the cloth and slate. If the nose height is too low, balls will fly off of the table because the ball is basically running up a ramp. I personally like Championship for both rubber and cloth. Their Tour Edition cloth combined with their Tour Edition rubber is FANTASTIC. However, last time I checked, Tour Edition rubber and their Pro-Am rubber is only available in K-66 and K-55 profiles. If your table requires any other profile rubber, you would have to get their MBS Group rubber.

what is the correct nose height for ridgeback rails on a 7ft valley table?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations Год назад
That rubber specifically? No clue! However, nose height for EVERY rubber is supposed to be between 1-3/8" and 1-7/16". Pool table manufacturers design their tables (and by default, their rails) to be used with a very specific PROFILE of rubber - not brand. If your nose height is to be set within a given range (and it is, it's between 1-3/8" and 1-7/16"), how you achieve that is going to be determined by 1) the height of the top of the rail, 2) the angle at which the rail is cut, and 3) the combined angles of the rubber. If the angle between the top of the rubber and the back of the rubber is more acute, that will drop the nose height. If it's more obtuse, it will raise the nose height. If you're installing the wrong profile rubber on your table, you won't fall between that range regardless of what brand rubber you're using.

How do you ensure the nose of the rail is Exactly correct? is the base of the rail cut so that the top of the rubber goes in the correct place, that is when placing the rubber along the top of the wood and making it line up very closely, and thus the nose comes out right? Or...???
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
If you're replacing rubber on an existing table, the height of the rail and the angle at which the rail is cut for the rubber will determine the nose height. So, if you're using the correct rubber for the table, when you align the top of the rubber with the top of the rail, your nose height will be correct.

Sure thing... billiardsofneworleans.com/store/Pool-Table-Rubber-c34045028 You'll need K-66 rubber and rail facings. I typically recommend using the 3.2mm unbacked rail facings. As for rubber, you've got two different options. You can either get the inexpensive "MBS Group" rubber (which is good) or, you can get the better "Tour Edition" K-66 rubber. If you're replacing the rubber yourself, I would recommend going with the better of the two. If you're not paying for the labor, may as well splurge and get the best option. Don't forget, you'll also have to replace the cloth on the table if you're replacing the rubber. There are LOTS of cloth options. The industry standard for most (average) players is the Championship "Invitational w/Teflon". However, if you plan on playing a lot of pool and upping your game, I would go with either the Championship "Tour Edition" or "Pro-Am" cloth. The Tour Edition cloth plays about the same as Simonis 860 and the Pro-Am plays about the same as the Simonis 760. I have found that both the Tour Edition and Pro-Am are MUCH easier to install than Simonis. That, and they typically wear longer than Simonis. If you take your time and follow my video, you should have no problem with changing out the rubber and/or cloth.

A little late viewing this video. This looks like a Gandy table which is just like one I just got (Gandy ???? 92x46). I know one end rail has rating on a durometer at 50 and was told this is within expectations for pool table rubber so I did not install new rubber when I re-assembled the table. The other end rail on it however is very dead, very dead. I have checked rubber point height and it is same as others. I have also tightened all rails to equal torque. I am now thinking to replace the entire set of rubbers so couple of questions. 1) What is the model of the Gandy table you worked on here? I have not been able to find the model name anywhere. 2) What is the cushion profile? Hoping not to have to take the rails off to measure this. 3) What rubber did you use for the replacement?

You're right. That is a Gandy table. If you replace one rubber, you really should replace all of them. It's just a good idea. That way, they all play identical. 1) I don't know the exact model of that table. Gandy made a lot of different models back in the 60's, 70's and 80's. 2) The rubber profile is a K-66. 3) I used the standard MBS Group rubber from Championship. However, you can use their Pro-Am or Tour Edition rubber for a bit better play. I use their MBS Group rubber because it plays well and the average player won't get the benefit from higher end rubber that a more serious player or professional player will.

I guess you could use it. I don't have any experience with that particular glue. So, I can't say with any degree of certainty how it would hold up. I do, however, know that the Barge glue works EXTREMELY well for this exact application and it's easily enough removed next time you go to replace your rubbers. Many people don't consider that second half of the process. There are a lot of glues out there that would hold the rubber to the rail for a very long time (if not forever). But, it does need to be reversible. So, unless you have experience working with the 3M Scotch Weld 10 and know that it's easily enough removed later on down the road, I wouldn't use it.
