I was pressing out the top ball joint today and broke the seat of the control arm so I have to put in a new one. I have never done steering and suspension work before and figured it was time to jump in. 1st lesson learned is to take out the retainer ring on back of ball joint. I was worried with all the angles I could see marked there that I was going to royally screw this up. You made it very simple by marking the thing. It was easy in and easy out...so to speak. No sledge hammers and presses involved. I'll be back out tomorrow and finish my job. Thanks.

Thanks Mike. My hd2500 is an ‘04 and I just discovered the bottoms of both upper arms are Swiss cheese! Yes, New England truck. My 60-something year old patience and back were ready to cry uncle and pay someone to do this, but rust and all, your video demonstration pushed me over the edge. I’ll order the control arms now (for better or worse). 😎

I saw that it was Moog part, I was surprised you didn't mention one brand versus another, as there are definitely some substandard parts out there in the marketplace. I had never given thought to what brand parts the shops put on my vehicle. I figured they'd get a decent quality pair because they don't want to do the job over again in a month or 2. But that's often not the case. 😒 Then I found a really good mechanic who swore by Moog parts and I've paid Attn to the suspension parts that go on my vehicles since then. Thanks for the video!
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 10 месяцев назад
If it is a critical part (this meaning depends person) I go with OEM. I figured if the original went 10-12 years it is a pretty good return on investment to pay more for OEM. I don't recommend any brand over another, other than buying OEM. They all can make junk!

@kenman1717

that looked pretty painless. I do those daily here in Alberta Canada, and very rarely do I get one that easy. i usually put new GM adjuster bolts in and cover them in antiseize to try to make it easier for the next time around. they way a lot of trucks get pounded in the oil patch and logging here, some times even GM and Moog balljoints only last about a year. Napa ones only last about 3 months.
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 6 лет назад
Yep that is why I was not looking forward to this job! but I am glad with how it went. And yes this is the Moog $45 USD assembly, so I figure I will be lucky to get a year out of it!
@ginakerry2588
@ginakerry2588 10 месяцев назад
You expect only a year out of an upper control arm?? Sounds like that could get expensive in a hurry x2 control arms and paying a mechanic to do it. I was hoping that by getting a Moog part, I'd be good for another 12 years anyway . The OEM having lasted 18yrs. I don't take my 2WD truck off road if I can help it. I thought by buying a 3500 for 1500 style workload the parts would hold up...maybe not???

I think it's funny you think that truck is badly rusted. I mean yah, the frame/control arm and everything else looks like it's entombed in a 1/2" of mud but all the metal appears to still be intact. My 07 classic is rotting so bad I'm concerned about the metal brackets holding the control arms to the frame & plotting to weld new metal in there. Just pulled the bed to descale everything from the cab backward, replaced the center crossmember completely, welded new steel into the rear crossmember to save that, made a new shock mount for the rear crossmember, replaced the bumper that was nothing but a facade of chrome and plastic... Still have three or four body mount brackets that are nearly gone to be replaced. Where in the Northeast are you? I'm about to escape the Northwest of $hit Jersey to New Hampshire.

@Mr.Beastforpresident
@Mr.Beastforpresident 5 лет назад
The Disgruntled Mechanic Makes sense to me. Mike, Do you find you get inner tire wear when driving with snowplow? It would seem like the added weight it would make the tires camber inwards, could be wrong. I live in the South, I've never even seen a snow plow in person, only on videos. It must be beautiful there when it snows but, seems more expensive taking into account vehicles don't last as long as they potentially could with rust. There's a 2012 Chevy diesel truck on RU-vid with over a Million miles. Carol Judice on RU-vid has over a Million as well on a 5.7 Vortec gas. It should be a law that Auto Manufacturers put a ( real ) rust proof coating that ( actually works ) , on vehicles sold where there's salt & snow. I've seen on RU-vid and heard Fluid film vehicle treatment helps with rust. $30-$50,000 for a vehicle doesn't come easy around here. Then added tax and loan interest doesn't help
@TheDisgruntledMechanic
@TheDisgruntledMechanic 5 лет назад
no unusual tire wear but the vehicle needs worn parts to replaced or it will cause wear on tires and many other parts. And yes I did a video on getting my truck Krown rustproofed. I know it won't stop it but hope it slows it down!
