I appreciate the videos! I'm such a greenhorn at growing succulents. Some grow some die. I'm still trying to figure out why. Your tips sure do help.

I’m sorry you’ve had succulents die. I think any succulent owner can relate-I know I can. Ever since I started watering based on signs of thirst (e.g., leaves that are wrinkly or can be easily folded) instead of watering on a schedule (e.g., every two weeks) or watering when the soil is completely dry, I’ve killed far fewer succulents. My moonstones went almost 5 months between waterings. Many of my Echeverias can go 1-2 months between waterings. I also repot my succulents after I buy them because I noticed that many succulents from greenhouses and other vendors (including online vendors) are not potted in well-draining soil.

Some grow, some die. Seems to be the truth of my succulent garden also. 🤪

Specially I have very bad luck with sempervivams, which is supposed to be ever living.

@@mahereentazree8693: My first-ever succulent was a sempervivum. Now I am bored by sempervivums. 🤣 Have you tried growing sedums? I’ve found that sedums can be pretty forgiving with overwatering. My favorite succulent is ghost plant (Graptopetalum paraguayense), which I’ve also found to be forgiving. I’ve had plenty of learning curves during my 3+ years of collecting succulents. Some succulents do a better job of bouncing back if you make a mistake, such as overwatering.

Can you give tips on how to care for Orostachy Fimbriata. I have two small pots. Through February to May were doing fine. morning sun and water when dry. When summer came the morning sun seem too much so I moved them to just bright light. From June till now August it seems to be transforming growing two or three tine rosettes only on the crown and losing side leaves. Appreciated advice on what to do next

@Mountaincrestgardens Год назад
It sounds like your Orostachys might be blooming out. Unfortunately, once an Orostachys rosette blooms, its life cycle is over. We're not sure if you were growing these indoors or outside, but we should mention that frost hardy succulents really thrive best outside, and the better growing conditions outdoors can help them live longer before blooming out. The other possibility is that you're seeing it stretch tall from lack of light, in which case you need to gradually acclimate it into more sun over 1-2 weeks.

So why don't you fertilize? Are the greenhouse conditions good enough for year round growth? Probably 11 months too late, but understanding growing conditions i think is interesting.
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Год назад
Sorry, that was confusing. In my *personal* collection, I rarely fertilize because I have to grow everything indoors, I'm not trying to encourage rapid growth, and I re-pot with fresh soil every couple years. But in the nursery we do fertilize, because we're trying to grow young plants quickly. But plenty of hobbyists do fertilize their personal collections! Lots of ways to go about it and using a diluted fertilizer every month or so during the growing season is not going to harm your plants.

Can you transplant at any season?
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Год назад
For indoor succulents, yes. If you're planting outdoors, we recommend getting succulents planted at least one month before the first frost or in the spring after the risk of frost has passed.

If any of my succulents were as root bound as the haworthia, I would cut most of the roots off, divide, and make 3 separate plants. IMO. 😉👍🏼💚🌵

A very good point! Transplanting is a great time to divide and spread the love!

My aloes keep dying when I repot the babies in smaller pots. I was always taught to water as soon as you repot, but my mom only had regular houseplants. Could this be why my aloes are dying?? The leaves turn translucent and droop, then the whole thing dies. :/
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Год назад
Yes, that does sound like rot. Succulents are unique in that they should not be watered for several days after re-potting, so that any tears to the roots can dry and callus over. You may have other factors contributing to rot too though, so be sure that you're using a gritty, well-draining soil and a pot with a drainage hole. Also, keeping aloes in lots of sunshine and airflow helps to prevent rot.
