An 82 yr old man in UK returning to succulents after too many years. You are good, with an easy manner and plenty of good solid information. I am subscribing,
Loretta Odonnell when you are watching my video, you should see a “subscribe” button underneath (if watching small view, phone turned normal way). It is in red right across from my name “SweetSweetSucculents”
I just bought a handful of succulents and this was super helpful! I'm the type to baby plants, and I've struggled with succulents previously because I definitely have a tendency to overwater if I don't force myself not too
I Hate Almond Joys well thank you! Just remember, they like well-draining soil, lots of light, and the #1 killer is watering too often! I have a video on how to know when to water but in general, you let the soil get bone dry before ever watering again. I wait even longer til my plant looks wrinkly or floppy. Good luck with your plant and I hope it leads you to get more! (It’s an addiction.) Thanks for watching!
Same bought two at farmers market didn't tell us the kind they where or any watering or care tips they both look like echeveria types... i think... had to find it all on youtube
JULIE SIMMONS Good luck! Also check out my video on propagating leaves, I did it all the time until I had hundreds of plants and now I don’t even do it much because I don’t know what to do with them all!
Very nice presentation ~ learned some things from you that I have never known - or been told by 'experts' relative to repotting. I will recommend your site to other. Thanks so much!
I wish I saw this video before I bought a bunch of plants! As a newbie, I got really excited, so I bought a bunch of different succulents, repotted them, and watered them without really knowing what I was doing 🤦🏼♀️. I do live in Phoenix AZ, where it’s super dry, and all the pots have drainage holes, so I THINK they will be ok, but I’m going to keep a close eye on them. Thanks so much for being so informative, I will be binge watching your channel today lol
Tara Lipke yeah in a hot and not humid place like you have I bet they’ll be okay....here on the other hand we can get super high humidity. Glad you enjoyed the video!! ❤️
I’ve had my succulent for a little over 5 months now and she has grown so much! Definitely saving this for when I get to repotting her once it’s a little bit warmer
Thank you!! I'm so glad you showed what to do with wet and dry soil, I feel like other videos only show how to do things with perfect conditions. Half the succulents I bought yesterday were soaking wet, but now they're all going to thrive!
Thank you so much for this video! I have never really kept succulents because of having no clue how to properly care for them, but this year I bought a few and they are doing quite well. However, I don't know why they are doing well! I do plan on putting them in terra cotta pots. Now that you have answered some critical questions, I feel much happier knowing how to care for them. It's hard to just find a simple answer to the care of these plants and your video was nice, straight forward, and I no longer feel like I am crazy because I listen to my plants. I watch them and can tell if they are in need of something. That's a fantastic way to love your plants! I will be watching more of these videos and I am new subscriber. Thanks again!
Hi. Fantastic work. I really want guidance to plant in glass containers. I repotted yesterday in moist soil. I'm not sure now if it was the correct thing to do. These succulents I bought were v small
Hey there! Glass containers without a drainage hole are pretty much a death sentence for succulent beginners but if you are super careful, it can be done. I have some I made over 7 years ago still going strong. You really need to learn how to tell when your plants need water and you can’t give them too much when they do, just enough to get them to plump up and remove wrinkles. You also need to have the perfect soil mixture, so it will evaporate fast enough and dry out. Inside the home is even harder. Planting in moist soil is not always the best idea and they could rot but you might be just fine. Check out my other videos about how to tell when to water and also how to make a good soil mixture. Thanks for watching!!
Hello, I'm a new subscriber from Southside Chicago!! Thank you for this informative video, now I know why I've been assassinating, so many succulents,, everytime I repot them💔. I've been too tough on roots, water right away, & put in direct sun. Too many wrongs.. I was giving up on succulents all together... Hopefully they'll/I'll do better now with your tips ☀️
Today, I received my Succulent & Catus Potting Mix, which already contains perlite. I haven't opened it yet because that's the only thing I have received thus far. I would like to know if I should add more perlite? If yes, do I still add 50/50?
@@5rgyyuyrgg whereabouts do you live? I still mix in some perlite but if you lived in say Southern California you might not need to. Do you know what zone you live in?
No, I don't know what zone I live in. Please tell me. I live in Washington, DC My plants will be indoor plants because I live in an apartment that doesn't get sunlight due to the large apartment building that's directly across from mine. Because of this problem, I bought Two Temu round very inexpensive (under $5.00) They are a "Full Spectrum LED Plant Grow Light" that is height and brightness ajustable it also has a 2, 4, and 8 hour timer.
@@5rgyyuyrgg you’re in zone 7a. I’m in 7b so your weather is a lot like mine. If they’re going to be indoors they’ll need to be pretty close to a grow light usually in order to not stretch. But yeah since you’re in a similar zone as me you won’t be able to keep succulents outdoors year round. Also if you keep them indoors I usually add more perlite cause they won’t dry out as fast indoors. You could use the succulent soil probably, you’d just have to be really careful with watering
You are a good teacher. I enjoyed listening to your lucid instructions on how to repot succulents and feel ready to do the task tomorrow myself . Thank you
Yes that’s why I made sure to mention it at the beginning (because that crested pachy was wet when I got it which is why I mentioned that I let it dry out.) Also the setosa soil was wet and I mentioned laying it out to dry. You don’t necessarily need to remove all the soil from it unless you plan to put it in all new soil mixture, I guess it just depends on what your plan is.
You can wait that long if you just want to, but if you are using proper soil that dries out and drains fast, and you repot it in dry soil, any root wounds you might have made will be dried out in a day or two, so you could water if needed. If the soil you are using is not good quality or hold onto water for a long time, you may need to wait longer. But then you’ll have a lot of other problems in the future since succulents need fast drying and well draining soil
You can wait that long if you just want to, but if you’re using good soil that drains fast and dries out quickly, then you really only have to wait a couple of days…reason being if you did create any wounds on the roots, they’ll be dried out in a day or two, especially if you are repotting it in dry soil. Now if you are using soil that holds onto water for a long time, you need to wait longer, but you’ll have a lot of other problems in the future since succulents don’t do well in that kind of soil
I'm so grateful for this video! Finally caved and bought my first succulents today. They were pretty dry so of course I watered them right when I got home. Im planning on potting them in the morning and just came across your video while trying to learn more. So now all of my new babies were very gently taken out and put careful on a wire rack to help dry out the soil. Thank you so much for the great information
rose hill Aww congratulations on your new babies! I’m glad you are taking the time to learn about them because I sure didn’t at first until I killed a few! Thanks for watching and good luck!!
Anya Taos Thank you so much and if you have any topic ideas that you’d like me to do a video on, please let me know! I want to cover whatever people want to see the most! ❤️❤️❤️
New subscriber and this was a very good video. I have some new plants to do something with and I also ordered some. I hope to plant them in a raised garden bed I have. It is one I can bring in come winter. I live in Denver. Thanks for sharing!,
New subscriber! So glad I found your videos♥️ I just got my first succulent for Mother’s Day🥳 I have always been a natural green thumb for other indoor plants but I’m weird & I prefer small plants that don’t grow crazy fast or I toss them lol. I want more succulents they are so beautiful and these videos will be a big help!! 🙏🏼
I think you’re asking if you can put two succulents in one pot and the answer is yes, but it’s good to try to match them based on things they like. For example, Echeveria like a lot of sun and aloes and haworthias like a little bit less. Same with watering issues, it’s good to pair them up based on similarities. I have a video where I go over the basic types of Succulents and their basic light and watering needs if you’re trying to figure out if your two plants are compatible or not. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much!!! I hope you keep watching - I plant to do list more! Also, if you ever have a particular topic you would like me to do a video on, please let me know, I’m always looking for things to make new videos about :)
Crystal Akers a crested plant is one that had a mutation when it first started growing, and they typically have flat wide stems. Lots of plants can come in crested form, and many people collect them. I’m not a huge fan though, just happen to have that one
omg why didn't I watch this first before messing mine up:( literally everything she said not to do or that was bad I did... my poor Gloria (my succulent) is gonna die ;-;
Well don’t panic, if you did all of those things, my best advice would be to take your plant out of the pot and lay it out on a dry surface for a day or two and then plant it again. You never know, it may be just fine. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!
I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking me if I label my plants? If so, no, I typically don’t if I know what it is, but some of my rare ones I will label.
Elena Celeste I hold off on fertilizer right after repotting just so the plant doesn’t get stressed from 2 different events, but if it works for you, that’s cool too!
I've watched sooooo many succulent videos. I've only subscribed to you. Straight to the point. Pleasant. Knowledgeable. I'm going to go watch your other stuff!
this is so great video. I love succulents so much and I even have a bunch of it at home, what I love most is they're so cute and occupies a little space compare to other ornamental plants. Great to know things from you as well. We learn from each other.
Thanks! I had no idea about the damaging the root and watering afterwards thing ! That's what I'm doing wrong ,I bet! I thought, why isn't she watering it ,it's super dry ( after potting) . But when u said if u water it ,it could get root rot from the damaged root. I did not know that! Thank you! Well, I learned something!. I always message and loosen the root ball so that it will grow but of course things happen.
Glad I found you. I'm from the Philippines. Just starting to collect succulants about 2 months ago after my retirement. Thank you so much for the tips. Enjoy watching and more videos. Stay safe. MABUHAY from the PHILIPPINES!
Marcella Raplee Thank you for your comments! I actually have a raised bed outside that I put Succulents in during the spring and summer and I am planning on doing a video next about it. One of my very first videos was me putting it together last year
SweetSweet Succulents wonderful...I look forward to seeing it. I am looking at some of your other videos as well. You are so easy to understand and don’t rush what you are showing. Hugs and looking forward.
Are you talking about the mix that I use in this video? Or something else? If you’re talking about what I use in this video, I have another video on how I make my soil
I would remove all the soil, wash them with soapy water (to remove all the unwanted pests that maybe in the soil) remove all the small roots, air dry for 3 days then plant them in a dry soil.. i will not water them for the next 2 weeks.
Mommy Approved that’s another option. I treat all mine with systemic so I can avoid the washing for pests. I have too many plants and it takes too long, but that’s not a bad idea if you have the time
Mommy Approved I use Bonide Systemic Granules and you can find it on Amazon and in some stores. I show it in a few of my other videos but it works well
I live in Oregon and am planting my plants outside. I cant keep it from raining before 4 days. They seem to be doing okay but do you have any hints on making them more successful
Dannie Aasted if you get frequent rain, I’d make your mix as gritty as possible using inorganic things like chicken grit, perlite, etc (so they dry out fast) OR you can cover them with a tarp or have some mobile structure to shield them from too much rain
I've got 2 succulents they are spiraling up. It's called Raym. Hamet or Stonecrop.. Do you have any recommendations on repotting? I've got a wide shallow terracotta pot. They're in small pots now. Thank you Im in Texas
Jane Vt. Exactly! I definitely learned the hard way when I started but I’m finally getting to know my plants and how long they can go without water. Seems like they all have different personalities! Thank you so much for watching also!
@@scottgrimes3655 thanks for watching! Check out my other Succulent videos like how to know when to water and how to propagate stuff to get tons of plants!
I regret watching this video first before repotting my succulents that i bought. I did the same with jade plant you have unfortunately i loosen the roots with running water and repot it today. Thank you for your video and now i remove from the pot and i will let it dry it first. I hope it wont die. Then when it is dry i will repot it. Am i doing it right? Please help..😫😫
elenaf77 yes I think jade will be fine, they are pretty tolerant of almost anything...if not sure about anything? just don’t water a few days and you’ll be fine
Thank you so much for this video! It was very informational and I really enjoyed that you showed multiple scenarios, not just one. I am a new plant mommy, and I have 3 little guys now. I am so nervous. Once they are repotted, will we have to repot them again? Can you show how this is done if we need to. also, how do we change out the soil when you can tell the soil has used its nutrients. I just repotted mine, and I wish I watched this video before hand. She was dry and I took massaged the soil off as you did. but I realize now I shouldnt have watered her!! I hope she doesnt rot! =/ thanks again for this video!
lpt2008lt Those are all great questions and I may do an update to that video to talk about repotting and when to change soil. You really don’t have to change pots unless it is outgrowing its pot. You also technically don’t have to change the soil, you could just add fertilizer if you wanted to. Thanks for watching!
8:00 I disagree with your choice to pot the plant in the new soil along with the old rootbound soil.. especially if it's full of peat moss, as you mention is sometimes the case. I'm sure the plant could manage through that situation, but it doesn't look ideal to me.. For repotting succulents, I recommend soaking the soil the day before, gently use a hose to wash away the old dirt, let the succulents rest & dry unpotted for a few days, then pot them directly in the fresh soil. Just a thought, thank you for sharing.
Omg I am just now seeing this comment!! I try to reply to every comment I get but anyway sorry for the delay. I’m going through the RU-vid studio app and it’s actually showing me some old comments from videos I made years ago. I understand what you’re saying about the soil and that is one way to do it, it’s just that I go through so many plants on a regular basis and I have found that whether you do it or not, they tend to do OK as long as you get some of it off and use good soil to add in. Plus I already knew that jades aren’t really picky in regards to water. Believe it or not that particular plant is still on my shelf today in that same pot and it looks big and beautiful! You can probably see it in some of my walk-through videos that have made not too long ago. Anyway thanks for commenting and sorry for the late reply, I guess better late than never!
Oh my goodness, I just damaged some roots of a jade plant (pulled them a little) when trying to repot without realizing they were the roots and panicked so hard. It was only a little bit of them so hopefully they're okay. Glad to know it's part of the process, will definitely NOT be watering for a while.
Don’t panic! Succulents are tough. That’s just the ideal way of repotting - They might be just fine even if the soil was wet. Just make sure it dries out before you water
I forgot to say thank you again. Ill check out your videos to see if theres one that tells....brain no worky....whats plant is named. Identify! Yes. And i want to say ive wanted succulents since i first saw on pinterest a wall succulent garden. It was very cool hanging on a patio and so colorful. I lived in an apartment back the so it was years and years ago. I bought seeds from Wish once. Idk what became of those. So this is my first real attempt. They are everywhere in north texas. Maybe like that in other states too.
Well thank you for watching and subscribing!! Succulents definitely get easier once you get the watering down. They’ll tell you when they’re thirsty. Anyways don’t trust seeds from Wish, they’re almost always not succulent seeds. There are not a lot of good sources honestly for seeds, I only know a few
Dear friend, glad to see you here, sorry for distturb, this is Nick, we are a company specializing in succulent flower pots and home decorations. If you are interested, you can contact us at any time to get more information or product catalog, we will reply you as soon as possible. Thank you very much.
I’d do small ones that typically come in a tray. If you will email me, I know a few sellers who sell them by the tray cheaper than on most of the normal websites. I’m at radiofemme@yahoo.com The only major issue with buying a tray is that you may have to get some little pots to put each one in separately. Otherwise, you may spend a lot more money buying them each in single pots but I have some recommendations for that as well if you’d rather do it that way
A beginner here with succulents. I get the hole in a pot for drainage, but my plants are indoors, so then you need a plate underneath so water doesn’t get all over the floor, table?
Hi there I have a question! I bought a succulent arrangement from lowes 2 months ago and they have grown since then. How would I repot the arrangement to a bigger pot when there all crowded together pretty stuck in the pot they are in right now...help. thanks 😊
You can do it a couple of ways. You could take the whole thing out and plop it right into a bigger pot and then add dirt around it, or you could take it out and break them all up and stick them in a larger pot. It just depends how you want them spaced. But both of those would work just fine
How long do you wait to report? Also do you sometimes remove all soil when you buy them if it's really dry and kind of chunky soil, Should I still add stone to the soil the soil I use is a cactus succulent mix which has lot perlite in it should I add more than what comes in the bag already? Sorry about all the questions but I did buy some Stone almost like pea gravel and put it in the bottom of my pots because they have removable drain holes and I don't have anything for them to drain in so after watering I have to put the plug back in as to not make a giant mess and also, is it better to top or bottom water your succulents for me it seems that it's worked both ways when I had trays for them to drain into. I also have 2 echeveria's that were in the same windowsill and one grew perfect and the other looks more like a palm tree that I'm worried my snap somewhere on the stem, I was wondering if you could tell me why it seems as if it's growing away from the Sun and how do I fix it? Thank you so much and love your page this is something my daughter and I do together and you have helped us so much thank you again.
I just repot whenever, so no need to wait unless the soil is wet. You can add more perlite to the mix if you don’t think it’ll drain well enough but I am sure it will be fine. The echeveria growing like a palm tree may need more light because they are supposed to stay short and rosette-like if they get enough light. Thanks for watching and hope this helps!
Do you repot the succulent if it's leaves start growing over the edge? I have a type of echeveria and it's started growing past the edge of the pot I have it in. I also have a succulent that has gotten tall and leans and I don't know if I need a deeper pot or not.
If you want it to get larger, yes, but you don’t have to. For the taller one leaning, it may need to be pruned. Most succulents, if you cut the top off, let the end dry, and stick it in dirt, it’ll grow into another plant.
Can you help me with this plant please echeveria echo succulents is what it is. I have a picture of them I need to know for sure how to take care of it. I live in Neb. If this help's.I can send you a picture so you know what i got. Mary
I don't know where to place my new succulents. I would really like to have them indoors and I wonder if I can move some indoors and some outdoors and rotate them? Is it better to put them outside in the direct sun or would they like to be under the same grow lights I use for my vegetable seedlings?
I bought three new succulents from a lady who left them out in the rain.. they are totally soaked through and just in those standard plastic pots (with holes) .. and also just standard soil. Do you think I should take them out - get rid of moist soil and re-pot after a day or two in proper rock/bark? thanks in advance for advice
Hannah May if you think they can dry out fast, they may be okay. If you’re not sure, take them out, rinse off all the dirt from the roots, and lay flat out in the sun til dry, then you can repot, or report in super dry dirt right after rinsing
Not really as long as you’re careful about watering. When they have thicker leaves, they are more sensitive to watering too frequently. Some people like to use terra-cotta for ones with thicker leaves though because it soaks up more water and so it’s less likely to hold water too long. Too big of a pot can be bad because it can also hold water too long. But as long as you understand how, and when to water, the type of pot doesn’t really matter too much.
Thank you 🙏 You were so through in this. You didn't leave anything unsaid and I so appreciate that. I think some ppl out there assume we know the smallest things and we don't and we need someone like you to tell us this is what I'm doing, this is why, and this is what you want to do after bcuz of so and so. A beautiful job done on this video! And now, I am off to see your others!
Aww thank you, I really appreciate it! Also, I feel kind of bad that I haven’t made a video in a long time so if you have any ideas for one, let me know!
I have never used moss because I worry that it will hold moisture in, which isn’t that great for succulents…although I guess that really dry decorative stuff would work, just never done it. Now I do collect crystals and geodes and often put them in as decoration. Also I love buying those bags of quartz or rose quartz on Amazon and using it as “top dressing”
Watched this after I already bought and repotted and watered my succulent. The watched this and immediately took out of the wet dirt and put it in dry dirt. I really hope I didn’t kill my plant.
Sounds like if you put it in dry dirt you should be OK! Just remember that succulents don’t like frequent watering. I have a video about that if you’re interested but they definitely don’t like to sit in water and if they have any open wounds on the plant or of the routes they can get rot. Don’t worry!! If it’s in dry dirt you’re good!!
So I repotted my succulents today without knowledge on how to do it and I watered it after being freshly potted. You said the water will cause the broken roots to rot and kill it, is there a way to prevent this? Or is it too late for me now? :(
It probably isn’t too late. You can either put it I’m somewhere extremely sunny so they dry out super fast or take them out and repot in dry soil. They don’t ALWAYS get rot when water touches broken roots/wounds, but that’s one way it occurs. Good luck 🤞🤞
Well as long as you don’t overwater I’m sure whatever you did will be fine. Just make sure you have good soil that drains well :) Hope you can check out my other videos also!
Water a lot! I do til it comes out the bottom :) just only water when they’re thirsty which usually isn’t often. I have a video on how to tell when they are thirsty
Thank you for the information ☺️ I repoted my 4 succulents and was worried that I did it wrong. Thankfully I found your video and realized I did it correctly!
Thank you. Very happy to have found you. I have a question in regards to new pot size. The succulents I bought came in the 2.5" pots and I bought 3.5" pots for them. Is that too small? Sorry, probably a silly question. Thank you :)
No I don’t think that’s a silly question at all, I think that would be perfect. They say not to go a lot bigger when you re-pot, just go a little bit bigger at a time so that sounds perfect ❤️
@@DaughterofGaia1979 LOL! I made this video years ago, but I remember that specific plant because it’s crested. I did buy the arrangement specifically because it had that rare crested one in it, I just pulled it out of the arrangement before the video. But I seriously know people who will steal from the store like that and I don’t approve! I just went back and watched my video and realized that the way I said it makes it sound like I just straight up stole it!
