Bex and her brother Jordan team up to coat a live edge slab of wood with ArtResin, turning it into a gorgeous charcuterie board!
As always, Rebecca shares a ton of helpful tips and insight along the way :)
ArtResin's super glossy, crystal clear formula transforms wood ( and many other organic materials ) into functional pieces of art and great conversation pieces!
Enjoy :)

Did you really start this video by saying maple is a soft wood likely to be dented?

If I may add my two cents to what others have said, hard maple and soft maple are two different animals. Hard maple is used for cutting boards and tens of thousands of baseball bats every year. Sugar Maple is used for bats. The Janka hardness is 1450 pound-force. Silver Maple is a soft maple and hardness is only 700 pound-force. A common test to find out which you have is to press a finger nail into the wood. You will see a dent in soft maple but not in hard maple.

Not trying to troll but those ends could look a lot better, next time cut them or seal them better, you can see the crevasse in the spit on the one end.

What is the name of that little scraper tool you used and where did you get it? Thanks!

Hi Lindy, that is our ArtResin spreader. You can find it in our Accessory kit (www.artresin.com/collections/accessories/products/accessory-kit) or just use any plastic notched spreader from your paint or hardware store. We find the groves are great for moving the resin around your surface and distributing it easily.

If I wanted to resin both sides of wood like a cutting board, do I have to let one side dry for 24 hours then do the other side and the edges?
@Artresin
@Artresin 4 года назад
Hi ShaTerra, Yes you will want your first side to cure. At 24 hours it will be cure to the touch but not fully cure. I might suggest waiting 72 hours for a full cure before turning it over and propping it up to coat the other side to eliminate the chance of any marks on the first side.

Hello. How many coats of resin did you use? I just made a coffee table using a live edge slab (black walnut), but I coated it with a water based polyurethane. It looks fantastic, but now that I watch your video, I'm thinking it would be great to add a final layer of the art resin for that ultimate smooth surface. Thoughts?
@Artresin
@Artresin 7 лет назад
Hi Iry! Thanks for reaching out! Absolutely you can apply ArtResin over your polyurethane. Since it's already sealed, you should be good with one coat ( it will naturally level out to a thickness of 1/8" ). Often multiple coats are required when wood offgasses and creates bubbles .. it all depends on the wood. Jordan and Bex were lucky and got a perfect layer on the first try with this piece of maple but some other wood projects we've worked on have required numerous sands and repours until all the offgassing/bubbles had stopped. Since yours already has the polyurethane on it, you should be good.

@@Artresinok what grit in between coats ? Also is there a link for the resin you used?
@Artresin
@Artresin 9 месяцев назад
@@A1Sealing you can purchase through our website www.artresin.com We typically sand with 80 grit, the sanding will remove any surface imperfections and also give the next layer of ArtResin some tooth. All of the sanding scratches will disappear once the next layer is poured.

How much weight does this add to the piece though?
@Artresin
@Artresin 5 лет назад
On a large piece, for example a 5x3 table you will use 75 ounces of the combined product (35.5 oz of each resin and hardener) which will weigh about 5 pounds :)

Did you stabilize or seal the wood first (any prep of the wood)? Was the wood totally dry? Can you please give more info?
@Artresin
@Artresin 6 лет назад
Hi Kimberly - in this case, the wood was absolutely dry and no, it wasn't sealed at all. It's always best to start with dry wood ( if you want to get really specific, you can even get a little gadget that measures the moisture ... the ideal amount is 4% moisture ). Sealing helps to prevent bubbles ... bubbles happen when the wood off-gasses air, which then gets trapped in the resin. Whether or not the wood off-gasses depends on so many variables ... the type of wood, how dry the wood is, if the wood is raw etc etc etc. Personally, I love erring on the side of caution and pre-sealing whenever I work with an organic material like wood. It takes no time at all - you can use a thin layer of ArtResin to seal applied with gloved hands and a disposable brush to get in the crevices, or a sealant of your choice ... just be sure you get one that dries clear. For something like wood, that can have nooks and crannies and uneven spots, I would probably choose a brush on sealant as opposed to a spray sealant, just to make sure that every bit gets good coverage. Hope this helps :)

Can i mix paraffin with resin when i cook in paraffin bee wood boxes ?
@Artresin
@Artresin 5 лет назад
Do you want to add paraffin to the liquid resin? We don't advise adding anything to the resin/hardener ( apart from colorants - no more than 6% ) otherwise it won't cure properly. Or did you want to coat paraffin with resin? Resin generally doesn't stick to anything that will repel water, so it may peel off from paraffin. You would have to test it out to see!

Wow dumbest vid ever.....just sand it down and reapply its not problem? Its a lot of extra work and epoxy is expensive. Also you should do 2 seal coats and a flood coat so that one thin coat is really phoning it on (kind of like the gift itself lmao) but it any rate you should torch or heat gun every 10 15 minutes till the bubbles stop rising. Which is why you should do the seal coats first then there will be no offgassing from the wood only what got trapped in the epoxy while mixing. Lastly I agree with not bothering with taping when you do the top but what about when you do the bottom? You do, do the bottom right? Otherwise that thing is going to cup and twist and usually by a lot and can happen within a short period of time after the top cures
