As a teenager, I had a saw sharpening business in NW Arkansas. I don't remember ever sharpening a crosscut saw but did lots of handsaws and circular saws on a Foley handsaw machine and a Belsaw circular saw grinder. Having used a crosscut since then, I can appreciate the skill level and knowledge required for a smooth, quick cutting saw.

Great video. The sawyers manual that was referred to was a godsend and enabled me to learn the process. Swayging the rakers was probably the scariest, but once you figure it out, there is a rythem to it. Since I learned, I have found several very in-depth videos that have confirmed my ability.

I enjoyed this very much. It has been 25+ years since I last stood in front of a saw vise, not to mention running a misery whip. It brought back a lot of memories. It seems I have forgot as much as I thought. FYI...Back in the day saw blanks were rolled out( as opposed to modern blanks being stamped out) so the spines could be a thinner gauge than the teeth and rakers. The thinner spines aided in less binding. A well oiled wooden scabbard to cover the teeth and rakers will help prevent damage (leave enough play so as not to remove the "set"), We always used old small fire hose slit open with several ties to cover the teeth and rakers. One last tip from an old wilderness tech, Always carry your tools on the down hill side of the trail. Happy chopping.

@@ChopWithChris , I am no expert. I stored all that info in a bin marked useful in my brain when I left Alaska. I am semi retired in my home state of Kentucky (not far from Mr. Chickadee, incidentally). I have done many things over the years. In the 80's I was a trail boss for the USFS in S.E. Alaska on Misty Fiords N.M. (No power tools allowed). Your video had a key that opened that bin. Your saw, by the way, is multi-purpose. It is generally considered a "Buck Saw", but can be used as a "Feller" for smaller diameter trees. Old tools and especially the "SAWS" are a dyeing art. Even the terms and language are all but forgotten... Sawyers, Fellers, Buckers, Chokers and Swampers are a few. You could spend a life time researching the history of saws and still be left with questions. Thanx again for the memories.

Always enjoy watching people work with traditional tools and your finished products are beautiful. Now that you've filed some saws, try putting steeper bevels on the cutters and the saw will be faster. You're the filer, so you can file it to maximize efficiency and tune it up at your leisure. I didn't see how you finished the rakers, but there are some precise gauges like the Anderson that will turn your noodles into spaghetti. Keep your eyes out for an Atkins 390. Filed right it's a rocket saw in hardwood and softwood.

When they're not lookin', test a tooth, see if it breaks or not...(19:01)! Also, Paul Sellers suggests laying the saw on a softwood board, and tapping every other tooth into the wood; seems this method lends consistency. I've had to do this cuz I didn't know about all these nifty tools for consistency. I inherited a 5/8" rat-tail file, which was good for the cleaning of the gullets.

Great information! I just came across two saws recently that need restoration. Both are two man, one is 60" and the other 72". Both are the same tooth/raker configuration as your saw. Does that make it a hard wood or soft wood saw? Or does it matter? One is pretty worn from the gullets not being maintained. I wouldn't know that without watching this, thanks!

This is awesome! I just bought a ~3' that's sure to need TLC, so this is really helpful. Bonus is seeing his sawbuck design -- I just broke mine and haven't really totally happy with it anyway. How long did the cut at the end take? I'm happy long repetitive processes are abbreviated, but I wish there was an on-screen timer to show long much time has elapsed, to be able to set my expectations. Otherwise, I find myself wondering if I've done the sharpening or whatever properly if it takes too long.

Pretty good video on basic sharpening. One step that is normally done was missed. When swaging the rakers they should be hammer swaged to about 0.003" to 0.004" higher then final height. Then the last step is to file the final 0.003" to 0.004" down to get a razer sharp edge at the correct shape. Why not take the time and temper the new saw before starting? This way you absolutely know it will be soft enough to sharpen and hard enough to cut. If you know it is a saw you tempered, then you could just start sharpening.
