Thank you for taking the time to make the crosscut videos. You probably could have been done by now but you took the time to teach us some things.

I like this "show and tell" style video. Showing some old tools and telling there use is very interesting.

Oh my gosh, thats what those files are for?? I have some!!! I never knew what they were used for. I found them while going through dads old things. This is exciting as I also found a cross cut saw. Also came across a set of big bits wrapped up in an olive green canvas drill bag. Still shiny and sharp.

Many of the times that I watch videos such as this one with old and special tools, and how much you treasure them. If the people who first owned them had similar tools that had been passed down to them that they loved

Hey Cody have you thought about selling templates for the custom handles you make? I think with a lot of older specialty tools we normally just get the heads and original authentic handles are usually replaced somewhere along the line with a modern day careless design that is nothing more than serviceable. I've noticed the antique and vintage tool market essentially boom and I know more than one of those chisels or axes needs a properly designed handle.

Cody, I know this is an old video but the Cross Cut Saw Co out of Seneca Falls NY is producing the Gibbs FYI. They also have other sets for the saws. Love your work here bring it back.

That Gibbs Jointer reproduction is THE tool!! Very nice, indeed. I feel blessed to have an original production one in my tool set. I am grateful that my tool set survived a recent fire at work( where I was using my tools, during my free time). Extremely priceless video clocked full of "heirloom" information. Cody, have you read "tale of a saw filer"? A book published by Simonds? A short book, but well worth getting a hold of a copy to read. Maybe your local library would have one?

Got a book in the mail the other day; "New Tools for Old Saws", US Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, by Bob Beckley. Inside you will find blueprints and usage instructions for all the tools you will need to maintain these saws. Drawings for the large aluminum jointer you have are in there, as well as ones for an adjustable spider and big bench/vise like yours.

Real shame we don't make ANY files in the United States anymore. Nicholson, Simmonds and other brands have all outsourced the work overseas. There is a company named Boggs Tool and file sharpening company that can professionally re-sharpen any file. I've used them before and am amazed by the end result. Some modern files can be considered consumables, but the old USA made files, especially the antique styles are worth resharpening.

I purchased a few of the new Nicholson files last year to file my vintage axes. I clean them regularly and they already don't cut as well as the did right out of the package. Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed!

My grandpa and his brother worked at simonds And got a lot of promotional items and even tested saw files since he was also a logger part time working for his father. He dies a few years ago and going through his stuff I found a lot of files, oil stones, water stones and those royal ones you like. I never thought much of it but have found my self blowing through files working in a machinist shop.

Watching these is giving me the urge to pull out dad's old saw and sharpen it up. I collected up my saw filing tools just prior to Cody expressing his interest in crosscut saws. I imagine since then the prices have gone up :)

Should an old Disston and Sons saw be restored or kept as an original ? Truly need advice because I got it with 1 screw missing and a huge crack in the handle. And, what are the tools/materials for the repairs/restoration needed. Any information is highly appreciated. I love this saw because it works.

I was recently at a yard sale and they had a bin of two dollar items. I saw the name Glardon Vallorbe and what do you know it was an old but new complete 12 piece needle file set and I love the Vallorbe files. Those suckers came home with me. But yes those old Nicholson and simonds are great files as I have a couple of those as well. Many people think all files are the same but those are the people who have only used the cheap ones.

Gary Malise what sort of nonsense is that? Do you enjoy having substandard products that break after light use? I was just regretting the fact that tools are no longer made like they used to be, and Cody is always quick to point that out.

I know they won't be to the quality of the simonds, but I'm a ski tech and we order high quality 8" mill bastard files from wintersteiger or swix. They are made with extreme care to have the highest tolerances to set bevels on Olympic ski racers edges. Night and day difference than hardware store files.

Both the Nicholson File Co. and Simonds File Co. still exist. And they actually use nearly the same manufacturing process and the exact same type of steel that they've always used. They're made just as well today as they were back then. At least from these two companies.

***** it will be a small market with museums, tool collectors and a hand full of people like Cody. To make a decent tool is costing a lot, but any tool not made in China a big bonus. If you plan to go for it, design a few small mods to the existing tool so it it your design to start with. Good luck.

This video should've been titled "Tools you'll need but good luck finding them and I am so fortunate to have them..." Seriously, i understand this video as you showing off the tools you have for saw sharpening but you title them as instructional videos... It would be very helpfull if you showed what you have and also shared what can be used by the rest of us... I like your videos but you need to dial back on the "humble" bragging

I don't see Cody bragging about anything in this video. If a guy with a 1000hp Mustang posts a video of himself making a 1/4 mile pass, does it mean he is bragging? Not at all. It just means he's showing people his car and what can be done with it. Bragging would be "I have a 1000hp Mustang and you don't" or "My pass was faster than yours" with some sort of snide or less than honorable intent being implied. I simply saw not one ounce of that in this video.
@IlyaGromov
@IlyaGromov 9 лет назад
There's a problem with a lot of instructional woodworking videos when a guy shows HOW to do something and uses tools that most of the people don't have and won't be able to afford. To me - this is kind of the same thing. This video Cody titled "Tools YOU'll need to sharpen saw" - if I was looking for information on how to sharpen saws I would see a lot of cool old tools that Cody has ("is fortunate to have") and be left with "good luck finding it" line... I was merely suggesting that if he wants this to be applicable to more people it would be great if he can tell us not only what was used for saw sharpening long time ago (with those old tools being scarce and hard to find) but what one can use now - using more available modern tools.

I have to agree with the previous comment. Really dude? What am I supposed to do about sharpening MY saw with your “no longer made special treasure tools” that you and no one else has? I searched for something to help me... not hear about your “Luck” (Your very open about your faith. Faith and getting lucky do not mix.) I love your clips but this is over the top. A little humility would be nice.

I have to laugh at your dissapointment with the "unnamed saw hammer". I too bought one from that "unnamed Saw Company" about 15 years ago. A total POS (like all the tools they sell). The face of the hammer actually dented when I tried to set saw teeth against an anvil. I sent it back with an attached nastygram only to be told that "nobody else complained about them". The hammer is a copy of the Atkins No.4 setting hammer. If you're serious about filing crosscut saws, find one of these on Ebay and buy it.

You won't need any of that to sharpen a saw. I've seen to done with a file and a knife, a thousand times, by people who would work those saws enough as to change a couple a year. This is just a bunch of unnecessary humblebragging.
