A large two-man crosscut saw is a beautiful thing but how to sharpen a crosscut saw? Today we will be sharpening a two man saw and a one man saw. then we will take them to the woods and try them out on some hardwood! The logs we are cutting are maple and Boxelder.

Today I followed your instructions to restore my grandfather’s buck saw which he and his brother used to cut wood to heat their home. Because you did such a great job explaining how the saw works, I had a lot of confidence knowing what I was doing. It turned out surprisingly sharp and is an heirloom for my children.

THIS helps us! You made it clear, showed it well, I get it, I can do it in the field this way. No judgemental statements just facts and even more info if desired. We are very remote twice a year, have super limited tools carried up on our backs; we can legally cut trees from the trail with handsaws, so this will let us keep our saw working hard and is moving. We can carry the tools you used, even 2 bolted boards for a brace. Thank you much.

Great video I will refer to for sharpening both my one and two man saws. I especially like the way you use a hammer first (after deepening the gullet) to bend raker teeth as this makes filing more intuitive to obtain a chisel point. Both my saws are perforated lance patterns. My one man saw was 55 inches in length before I shortened it 2 inches since the tip was damaged. Cheers from the Ottawa Valley in Ontario, Canada.

I appreciated the "No Fuss" of how to sharpen, and the maintenance of these old saws. I have one of these two man saws, and the way things are heading, these old saws might be real handy one of these days ! The way you explained the procedure makes me want to at least try sharpening one. Thanks

Thanks for a very well done video on a useful subject. The chips you got out of your demonstration cut show that you did a fine job of sharpening. The long chips indicate that your raker teeth are just right and so is the set of the cutters. My father, who in his youth sawed logs for a living, used an axe as a set guide. The curve of the axe head serves as an anvil against which the saw tooth set is formed with a ball peen hammer. First locate the curved spot that gives the set you want and use it for each tooth. A saw for pine was given more set than one for hardwood. He always carried a coke bottle filled with kerosene and plugged with a bunch of pine needles to use as a sprinkler to sprinkle the kerosene on the saw blade. It lubricates the saw and prevents a buildup of resin or sap on the blade. When I was a boy, he and I cut each year's firewood and an occasional bee tree with a saw set for hardwood.

Nice job, those videos you linked show how professional saw smiths would have maintained the best saws for the old logging camps, the vast majority of these saws used to cut firewood and build cabins by average farmers never had that much attention, though they could and did do the job asked of them. You can do a lot with a few files and home made jigs. One tip, a simple spider can be made pretty easily by driving 4 nails through a piece of wood, file or hone the tips to one length, then remove desired set amount from one of the screw "legs", very fast and easy, and a cheap way to have multiple spiders for differing sets.

I have a one man saw that I bought from Lehman's a whole bunch of years ago. I have used it to harvest logs from downed trees. That was before I was given a hand forged Japanese Timber Saw. Now my crosscut "push saw" hangs on the wall like a piece of art. It simply cannot compete with my Japanese timber harvesting saws (purchased an even larger one). Now that I am "practiced" sawing down a fairly large maple of white ash is nearly as fast as a chainsaw. I enjoy the exercise and don't miss the noise in the woods. It took me a very long time (about 2 years) to learn how to sharpen Japanese saws correctly. It was worth the investment.

I just spent a couple hours yesterday making a new hand for a one man crosscut saw out of mahogany. It isn't perfect but it's pretty close to the original. It broke a few years back when I was cutting pone for firewood for a little campsite in my woods me and my buddies built as teens. I just couldn't bring myself to give up on the saw I'm not sure why. There's something so cool about these antique saws that I don't get out of new ones, and above all I'm not the type to hang them on a wall and never touch them I think they yearn to be used! They're tools and in my opinion for doing this by hand they're the best of the best. Thank you for teaching me how to service the teeth. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I can keep an old tool running for yet another generation.

Great video, but my father was raised during the Depression and referred to these as "misery whips". :) He also said the three greatest labor saving devices he knew of were the farm tractor, the electric washing machine and the gasoline powered chainsaw. :)

Good video! I have a couple that didn't want to make worse, so now I can do it knowing the correct way! I have a couple of short stories concerning two man saws. 1. My Grandfather told me a newbie was headed to the woods with an old timer who told him the basics. After an hour or so the old guy stopped, wiped his brow and said, kid I don't mind you riding on the saw but I wish you wouldn't drag your feet. 2. A friend whose daughter was getting married, wanted to borrow mine because he was German and there is a tradition of the new couple using a 2 man saw to cut a log to prove they could work together.

THANK YOU! I now have the knowledge to do this for our Boy Scout Troop. We "sponsor" the crosscut time trials for each outing with other troops but our "Saw Guy" is no longer around. We have many saws, and now I know how to take care of the basics. A wonderful local woodsman donated saws, two saw vices, file guides, and setting pliers, but we didn't exactly understand how to use them. This one video has been amazingly helpful.

When I was a kid, my father and I cut several maple trees down in our back yard and cut them up for fireplace wood. When you get into a rhythm of pull and release just enough to guide the saw so it does not whip when your partner is on a pull stroke, it is a thing of beauty. I now have a bow-shaped two man saw from a friend's estate and my wife bought a one-man and an extra straight blade for a two-man and I'd like to get them all in shape.

So great. I just bought a two-man from an antique dealer, which I want to take in the woods and have fun. Thank you!! First time I ever saw one, was when my Grandfather took me to a lumberjack competition in Grayling, MI. He took one end of the saw and I took the other and he taught me how to pull it through. When we got the rhythm down, there was this nice sound to it. I am really looking forward to this.

A great video - I've learned so much about the technology and the procedure from what you've included above ! My 5-foot 2-person saw is all cutters, three-quarters of an inch between cutters, and cutters set alternately between the two sides of the cut. I haven't used a spider before so I'll be able to take a look through the antique shops in my local town ( Leominster, England ) tomorrow to try and find one ! Yes this video is a great help - thank you for taking the time to make it - and it is so well recorded and produced too ! @@WoodByWright They're not shops in the sense of a "workshop" like yours. What I should have said was "antique stores". We regularly the word "shop" to mean "store" in the U.K. just to confuse the rest of the world ! The town local to me, Leominster, is half-way on a line between Birmingham and Cardiff. In the summer, we have numerous antique stores, which offer stocks of secondhand tools. I will go tomorrow to look for a spider - probably the only sort of place to get one in the UK other than Ebay ! Thanks for your reply !

Nice work on providing minimum effort ways of sharpening a one or two man (person?) crosscut. Following the philosophy of do no harm, at 14;34 you are filing the center of the cutter pair and dismissing damage to the gullet as unimportant. I would suggest using a safe edge file to avoid creating the sharp notches in the gullet. The notch will create a stress riser and increase the likelihood of the tooth breaking off. It is a small point whether to polish the blade. I have found that saws with minor rust pits cut nearly as well as a saw with an unblemished plate. I do clean off the surface rust from the plate because it creates a rough surface that binds easier. I also wax the saw plate before using it so the blade slides easier. I clean and rewax the blade before storing it. I found that if I don't the sticky sap will build up and cause binding. I can only generate a small portion of energy every bit I can reduce the effort involved in using the saw means I can do a better job longer. 😁😎

It's much easier wet, i compete in collegiate timbersports and we use green or soaked wood, lubing the saw also helps

In this case no I just use pine underneath and it has the right amount of resistance. The amount of set does not need to be dead on accurate. The closer it is the better but most people wouldn't feel the difference. If I was doing this for a profession I would buy a spider that would actually feel the edge and tell me exactly where it's at.

Thanks for the info on those kinds of teeth. I recently bought a three foot long hand saw at the Restore and it is weird. The teeth for about six inches at the tip are ordinary but from there to the heel are all old timey like the big old cross cuts. I found your video on sharpening them and now i figure i will get it sharp, it is in pretty good shape. Any idea why they made one like that? : )

That is a logging saw. They do that because it's easier to start the teeth on the tip And then go into the main cut of the saw. Those would be carried for clearing trails and most small logs and brush out of the way.

Интересно какая у них толщина полотна в двухручке нашей 1.3 мм искать с пилорамы Машки там 2.2мм думаю будет много широкий распил получится. Интересно попробовать косой японский зуб чтоб пилить только на себя тогда от себя не пилит пила не гнётся

@@vladimirnikolaevich8503 пилил тем что было до этого, а до этого была этакая one man crosscat saw отцова лесная ножовка из дружбы, 75 см скорость в 2 раза лучше, зуб изготовил крупноватый и агрессивный, борщенул слегка, стамески-грабельки ниже примерно на 0.6 мм . В целом для изготовления болгаркой за 2 часа довольно недурно, но можно лучше. Полотно тонковато. По этому пляшет на конце, ручка просится. Если бы от 2х было то норм. Их пилы толще.

I found one in a local charitie shop today for £10 that's about 13 USD. I didn't get it but I might go back on Monday when they reopen, worse case it will look good as ornament for my shed even though it looked in fair condition.

Updated, I went back this afternoon and low and behold it was still there so it's now part of my collection. On closer inspection it isn't in bad condition a good clean is all it really needs. The teeth are in good shape not one broken or low and just a little dull, unlike the handles they might need replaced, otherwise a good find I think.

This was a demonstration on a quick way to sharpen the saw with only one special gage . Farmers probably did it this way compared to a logging company.

Not sure about the file you are using but there are files that do NOT have teeth on the edge so using them adjacent to other saw teeth will not cut into that tooth.

You say you will leave some of the corrosion on (if I understand correctly) you say the patina will protect the saw from further corrosion. I just want to understand what you are saying. Are you saying that a certain amount of corrosion in this case might somehow protect the saw from further corrosion? Just trying to understand.

patina is not corrosion most of the time. It is generally referring to the imbedded grease and oil that build up in the poor's of the steel it usually makes the steel black and dirty looking. Rust on the other hand is a corrosion that would be good to get rid of. It can be a seed point for further corrosion to occur.

There are a few companies that are trying to sell new ones but most of the time they're on back order. But for 90% of people out there it's easier to go by the antiques. You can find sources for them on handtoolfinder.com

I restored my mother inlaws atkins one man a good while back. Finding an old spider by itself was almost impossible for me but if you want one theres still a company out of new york www.crosscutsaw.com that still makes them as well as tools for working on these babies. It comes to you rough and you will have to set it up yourself with a file and a feeler gauge but compared to the rest of the restoratuon its quite easy
