How to Restore Faded Headlights for less than $20

In this video, I show you guys how to restore the HORRIBLY nasty and faded headlights on the golf. I bought this 3M restoration kit for less than 20 bucks and it does wonders. Ideally, if you have access to more sandpaper and better tools, by all means use them, however this inexpensive kit really made a world of a difference.

Depending on the stage of how bad your headlights are, you will begin with different grades of sandpaper. So if they are very bad like these ones, I started with 400 grit, and then proceeded to use finer and finer sandpaper. If they aren’t as bad, you will not have to start with something as aggressive as 400. You could being with perhaps 800 grit.
Something to note is that the headlights get damaged and start to fade due to UV exposure. That means that the more they are exposed to the UV rays, without any protection the faster they will begin to yellow and fade. Something to note is that wax and even clear coat are UV resistant. So when your sealant or wax that is on your headlights wears, the headlights will be bare and begin to fade again. If you decide to spray your headlights in a UV resistant clear coat, they won’t yellow and fade. That is why if you want to take this DIY one step further, you can spray the headlights after you’ve polished them with the rubbing compound, with a plastidip clear coat, similar to the link below. 3 coats of the clear coat will do you wonders.

I've been using this for about 6 years now. Had 3 kits and used it on two different cars, results are awesome. the lense won't be perfectly free without some very faint scratches but it looks more than enough and the results exceeded its cost. *Restoration lasts around two years until you might have to do this again without clear coat protection*

Yeah clarity wise they are much nicer, however to get them permanently fixed, you will need to spray a clear coat over top of the headlights.

Last year my friend was selling his 1995 3 series with nasty headlights. Picked this kit up for $16 bucks on Amazon, headlights looked near new afterword. Fantastic. For kicks, I called the local BMW dealer a minute ago and told them I had a 1996 328i with foggy, yellowed headlights and asked what they could do. They said they'd have to order and install new housings and quoted me 900 dollars per side LOL

Did use this 3M restoration kit on my chrysler Grand voyager (from 2000) They do now shine as glass. Great video :)

Thank you young man. I bought a different brand because the stores I went to didn't have the 3M kit with the drill attachment. Also, after I bought the Nu brand at Walmart, I went to their website and looked it up. They had an offer for the same brand I bought for $20, plus a $20 rebate. I could buy that and have it delivered to my Walmart (basically return the one I bought at the same time).

You should see my car.. condensation got on the inside of the my headlights and oxidized. So even when I clean my headlights and sand them down, it barely makes a difference.

Hey guys so I just watched this video and what the hell I went and got the kit it does actually work my headlights were charred from the sun, just about as bad as they can get.... I live in fort Lauderdale I just did my 2005 Toyota camry which has been with me since I bought it brand new in 2005 and has been an outside florida car all its life and has never really been waxed and polished routinely so yah everything on it is sun baked and yes the 3M kit works cheers thanks for the video man

Well, the other day I cleaned the microwave and toaster ovens, you know those handy cookers a lot of us busy singles never seem to have the time to clean. Dang that toaster oven glass was so dark I could hardly see the inside grill. I used some Soaped Brillo Pads I had and holy cow, I had a new oven again. I drive a 1998 Jeep Cherokee and noticed a while back that the headlights were yellowed up and after cleaning the oven decided to try the Brillo Pads on them. In less time then it took to peck this comment out I had two new sparkling headlights. A couple of bucks worth of pads, a bucket of water and rag, even if I need to do it again I figure I'll have a new Jeep by then.

I must say my headlights were in worse condition than these. I bought this kit from amazon. It said on the kit that my drill needed to be at least 1200 - 1600 rpm. Mine was no where near that but my headlights look brand new now.

I wish I had watched this before doing my headlights tonight. I used a different kit made by Sylvania, and spent around 2 hours manually sanding. I still got great results, but I wish I had gone with this kit that took advantage of a drill. The only plus is the Sylvania kit comes with a UV protective clear coat that you apply as the final step.

i did it with a orbital professional polisher, the one which looks like an angle grinder. i went to the compound and just applied pressure and turned up the rpm.b 3 mins of mopping it and it came perfect. never bothered sanding at all. i did clean the lights with undiluted screenwash first though

Amazing video! That is ONE MINT perfectly restored headlight. I think this is the most complete process I've seen. Only issue is how to remove orange peel on the headlight once you put UV protection on it!

you can wet sand it with a 2000 or 3000 grit and a lot of water, then polish it with a carnauba car wax , microfiber towel and elbow grease. Peace

Even without doing troublesome things ~ I first wiped with diesel oil, for a headlight If you polish with compound, it will become shiny!

You do not need a drill for the sanding....You can wet-sand the head lights by hand and it does just as good as a job as a rotary drill without the risk of damaging the surrounding body-head-light area. You can then use a rotary drill to buff with polish and then finally Wax !! For a long lasting, (new) looking headlight restoration job, apply 2-3 coats of automotive Clear-Coat after polishing and allow 24 hours to cure, make sure to mask-off appropriate body areas to prevent over spray! The head-lights will look like new for years with a clear coat application ! Nice video !!

If you were to clear coat. At which point would you add it? Right after the 3k grit? Would you recommend doing 2k grit instead or 3 and then clear and then 3k and polish the clear?

Hello, I have bought brand new headlights and can you tell me which is better, putting a vinyl covering over or spraying it with that clear coat? They are so clear I hate to throw a 3000 grit sand paper on it to spray it. The vinyl does have a uv tint and is thicker than a spray coat but not sure if once the road pits hit the vinyl can it be removed. What I don't want is to screw up my virgin headlights. It looks like spray painting clear is the same as getting scratches. Do you have any experience with the vinyl if it can be removed? That's sounds better with a thicker protection and I don't have to sand it. Your thoughts?
