How to revive a dead rechargeable power tool battery easily
If you like my videos, or if this one saved you money by not having to buy a new battery, and you feel like buying me a coffee to help support the channel you can here - buymeacoff.ee/JPinFuerte
NOTE: If this doesn't work for your particular battery or it charges but will not hold a charge you can find out how to recondition the battery here - bit.ly/2IzTVKi
You should not try this with the more modern Lithium batteries.
Rechargeable batteries for power tools sometimes will no longer charge but often these can be easily restored back to life with this simple method.
The problem: You have a drill or other power tool with rechargeable batteries but one of the batteries is completely dead and when you plug it into the recharger unit it won't recharge at all. But this may not be because the battery is unusable, just that without use its charge has dropped below the required level for the "smart" charger to detect that a battery has been inserted. Putting a small charge in to the battery then enables to charger to "see" it and start charging.
The manufacturers would tell you that you need to buy a new battery. When you look into it you find that the cost a new battery is so high that you may as well just buy a new drill that comes with a couple of new batteries. Well all is not lost!
A friend in the UK told me about this method to revive a dead drill battery many years ago and I have used it successfully a number of times since. Basically, it seems that when a battery becomes completely discharged the Dewalt 18v battery charger unit effectively does not recognise that a battery has been inserted. This method puts enough charge into the battery so that it is not recognised by the charger and it gets recharged.
I take the dead Dewalt battery and a good fully-charged battery and place them side by side. I then use a couple of pairs of scissors to connect the terminals together (plus to plus and negative to negative). I keep them connected for a minute or so and by then the dead battery has sufficient charge to be fully recharged by the charger unit. Of course you can use two pieces of wire or something else to connect the batteries together but I have found scissors work well when doing it by yourself with only one pair of hands.
Although I have fixed a Dewalt battery here I have used this method to fix other makes when the battery will not charge.
So, in future, if you have a dead NiMH power tool battery try this power tool battery fix first before buying new.
NOTE: In the video you will probably notice that the charging light is on when I put the battery in. This is because when I first filmed this I realised I had not pressed record on the camera. By then it was too late to redo it as the battery had some charge in it.

Great bush fix, we use it all the time. A quick charge when batteries are put in put in parallel like this (one under charged- one at regular charge) can cause some damage to the cells due to rapid current flow, but unless you're comfortable adding in a resistor and slowing the process down it's a great way to stop the corporate greed that the companies make by over charging for batteries. All the best from another island dweller

@@maxwellhouse1902 I use a big resistor so it doesn't get too hot. 5 W cement resistors which i sneak out of old/ discarded TV sets (CRTs) etc work well. If you're going to open up CRTs be aware of the shock risk and make sure you understand how to open them up safely)In terms of ohms, I just use whatever i find, as any resistance to current flow is better than none. I guess you could try different ohm ratings and see what you prefer.

Tried this yesterday with two Craftsman 14.4 V batteries that would not recharge for years. It worked for both of them! After the first one worked, I used my multi-meter to check the voltage on the other 'dead' battery. It was around 9.5V but after I hooked up a separate fully charged battery pack I had for a different drill, I got it to jump up to near 16 V and that was only with one minute of charge. I used test wires rather than scissors. I was just looking to buy new packs or replace the inner batteries on those Craftsman batteries but found this AWESOME tip and this saved me a ton of money and extra effort. I had exactly this situation with a two battery powered drills less than a year old. One battery died and would not accept charge. I was really sceptical after watching this video but I thought why not give it a go. (I did forego the scissors and strip down some insulated wire for the job though!) Hey presto! Worked a treat, charged up ok and seems to be holding charge and working fine now. Many thanks for posting this great tip, really appreciated!

It's a great idea! It is also used when one forklift battery doesn't respond to the charger. You simply plug a good and equal size battery together for a time, the plug them both into separate chargers. The battery that was dead is now being read by the charger and will get a new life! I tried it on a lithium 18 volt battery, but like you said it doesn't work. Had nothing to lose!! Thanks!

This seems to be very awesome. I am not very techy, but I did this pretty easily, using wire and clips to connect. I opened up the dead battery to get to the terminals more easily. It revived a DeWalt 14.4 Li-ion battery that seemed to be totally dead. Thus saving a lot of money, and unnecessary waste. Thanks for the great info.

I've got a CEL multitool that hasn't been used for years. The battery was completely dead and wouldn't charge. This is so old the company stopped making the tool 10 years ago and the battery 5 years ago and nowhere has replacements. I (very nervously) followed your instructions and linked up to the only other rechargeable battery I have which is a Makita. I was expecting one or both batteries to go bang, but apart from a few initial sparks, it's totally worked. I'm charging the battery fully now, but did a test after 20 mins of charging and my multitool came to life. This has saved me a lot of money replacing this tool. Thank you so much.
@TheWrightTimes
@TheWrightTimes Год назад
Well it's working and cuts wood but even after leaving it on charge for 24 hours won't show more than one bar power on the multitool. Any advice to get it fully charged? Will it get better the more cycles it goes through? I opened the battery a few days ago and it has what looks like 3x 18650 batteries but all wired together so no idea what to do if I need to change the cells for new ones
@JPinFuerteventura
@JPinFuerteventura Год назад
It sounds like one of the cells may be damaged, sadly. You could perhaps try to test each one individually but unless you can buy a replacements cell knowing which is faulty won't help.

I wanted to say thank you for sharing this trick. I had a dead DeWalt 14.4v battery which unable to charge, plug in charger and the charger blink non-stop telling me it's faulty. But kept the faulty battery for almost a year(actually forgotten about it) until I happen to stumble across your video by chance. I took out my other working DeWalt 14.4v battery, did exactly what you taught in the vid with scissors also, then after 15mins I plug the dead battery in and it started charging!!! After full charge I test it and it's back working again. To all those who do not believe, do not say rubbish because you have no idea what is going on. However I do not know will it work on li-ion batteries as mine is the old li-cad battery. Once again thank you for showing this awesome trick to revive my dead old battery. Everything you say is so darn true, not worth buying new battery but the drill is still very good...

Same with electric golf carts. If the batteries drain completely out or below a certain low voltage, they will not respond to the golf cart charger. In that situation I read on a blog just disconnect and separate the two batteries and charge them individually with a car battery charger to bring the voltage back up past the minimum tolerance for the golfcart charger to work again. IMO, Connecting the tool batteries with the scissors is bringing the dead battery back up within the minimum voltage for the charger system to charge that battery again. So many golf cart owners have spent big bucks on new batteries because they didn't know. The other guys on that blog site saved me lots of money just like your tip will with battery powered tools. Thanks very much.
