Scotty, I really like all your videos except this one. It really disappoints me because the splices you use are not the proper or reliable methods for auto electrical wiring. Wire nuts are not suitable for cars because of vibration and weather. Fuse is safe, but not the use of wire nuts. No mention of the switch or wiring ratings either. This is not safe.....Thanks for other video tho.....
@ChrisMichaelsChicago

@@secretninjawarrior Yup those clips suck! I solder and shrink wrap everything! Also use a clamp on meter to measure amp draw, now we have the correct gauge and switch rating to use., as well as the correct value fuse.You're point is completely valid.

I have a question my PT Cruiser is not turning over for some reason when I try to turn the ignition switch on it will not turn over you won't even hear it prank and I got a constant red flashing Circle it started at first and then it just shut off and then all won't start up at all I just didn't turn it on and I see the power's on but it won't start a crank you won't hear it kill over at all

I always go through a relay when running to fans or a clutch. It's too easy to melt the wires if you dont. Plus I go to a empty port on the fuse box to keep from damaging any wires on the vehicle. "Easy and removable without damaging any of the factory installed equipment."

@scottykilmer

yes, as long as the power intake isn't much. If it is, you must use relays in that wiring system to prevent blowing fuses. A relay takes the power from the battery and sends it to the device WHEN it's powered up by key power in that case
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 13 лет назад
@swiften Only for low gauge wires, this is a 14 gauge wire that can handle the power. And yes, as an example, on a late model Chrysler car you can't do this as the switch wires are small gauge computer wires that couldn't take that power. Good point., scotty
@AL6S00740

Roger that thanks for the relay, but what about the water resistant connectors and connecting the wires by soldering them ..? Is this strictly required ?

check the wiring for shorts, which can be a pain. OR , just rewire power to both devices directly from the battery using wire and in line fuses.
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 13 лет назад
@380gb Sure, I do that all the time, but this customer kept forgetting to turn the switch off and drained his battery. So I wired it to the ignition switch so the battery won't drain if he left the switch on. Scotty

@ALEX62592 you can rewire them, but Don't use the ignition switch, fogs use too much power. Wire it directly from the battery and also use a power relay to run them,most fog kits come with one. scotty

depends on the vehicle. Some like GMs with passlocks need reprogramming so they will work, they are not just bolt on and run systems.

@jose01ification generally either a short in the wiring going to the dash, a problem in the dash circuit boards, or a blown fuse. Start with the fuses. Scotty

Computers have made our lives easier in may ways, but trying to fix them on a car worth a couple grand doesn't always make a lot of sense. I like the way you think outside the box to get things fixed Scotty. No gain in sweltering in the heat because you can't afford to fix a computer.
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 13 лет назад
@7477238 You can make it cycle on and off it you want, by hooking it up to a thermistor sensor, as I show in another video of mine"How to fix your car's Ac cheaply." I made this video mainly to show how you can rewire devices in your car, not mainly for an AC repair. My other video is more for that. Scotty

@moofushu Well, to install off road lights, you would wire directly off the battery, not off the ignition switch, as they use a lot of power, You would also have to install a relay for them too. Scotty

Scotty, as I understand it, putting a toggle switch on the blower in this way will give you a choice between ful blast and off. Instead of a toggle switch, can you subsitutue a rheostat so you can get blower settings between full and off?

@TheLocalNut Yes, a system with problems like yours needs to be analyzed further in the AC system. In the case of my video, the compressor was brand new and the system pressures were fine. So hot wiring it was no biggie. Anytime you mess with AC, always hook up gauges to see what the pressures are, and if they are wrong, you have to fix that first. Scotty

Hello Scotty,, love and respect your work and advice and have spent hours watching them, being a petrol head and amateur mechanic myself. Unfortunately, I think this video is the most questionable one I have seen though. I like the idea of showing people how to wire things via the ignition switch, but with this particular example, your method is bypassing the safety switches (low and high pressure) on the system. Therefore if the TEV gets blocked, the AC system pipework or something could blow up or if the system runs low on gas due to a leak, as frequently happens, the compressor will likely lunch itself and blow up because these vital safety systems have now been bypassed and made totally redundant. Not trying to have a go, just think that on this video, this should have been mentioned as a caveat for others so they understand what they are doing in getting the AC system to run in this way. Matt.

there are tons of relays under the dash and it's a cow taking it apart on that model. Try getting your head and ears under there to find the source, but realize it's not easy. it can even be the blend doors on the ac system moving back into place. Me, I'd live with it. Fords make noises as they age

Neat fix I was thinking the same think since I have the same problem with my 04 civic, but I heard that the compressor cycles on and off when you drive the car (as necessary on hills, acceleration, high pressure, high tem etc) I was a little worried about the potential for damaging the ac system/parts, aren't there saftey switches that would be bypassed by doing this...switches that monitor the temp and pressure in the system?
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 13 лет назад
@jeffzaragoza You can, but you'd need to use a relay too, cause the ignition switch isn't strong enough to run that much amps which those fans use. Scotty

@scottykilmer

@maxazillion83 many things can cause that, from a bad starter to bad wiring to a weak battery and on and on. But your description of the problem is rather muddled, If I assume you mean the engine cranks over and spins, but does not start, yes, try pumping it. Old cars often need extra gas as they age to start up

Good and interesting video, my only thoughts are, that the owner must be careful to make sure the aircon is off before turning the ignition on, as the extra load will burn out the ignition switch contacts quite soon? I think of this as my old car was known for having weak ignition switch contacts and if people turned the ignition on with the normal heater on the switch wouldn't last long

If it's a computer problem that's affecting the air con clutch, there's a possibility it could affect other stuff too later on. If you're brave enough, what I'd be doing is checking in the computer for any busted caps (common in old cars), or reflashing the ROM using the JTAG on the circuit board (99% of embedded computers have JTAGs for this purpose). Nice quick fix though. Cheers.

I had asked you about my son's 2005 Accord a couple of days ago, and you mentioned being able to wire power to the AC compressor directly - it looks like this is what you meant. Aircons are pretty complex, not only turning on the clutch. But many times the clutch disengages and then engages, because there is not enough gas, because it has reach the target temperature, or ti's turned of temporaly by the main ECU if it notices that you need extra power (judging by the your behavior at the gas pedal). Some airocons hace sensors EVERYWHERE, to sense excesive frost in the evap ... Pretty complex stuff in some cases

Scotty, I've always been under the impression that twist connectors (commonly used in home wiring) are prone to coming loose from vibrations and could possibly ground out on something causing a short in the system. I generally use butt splces or solder splices with shrink tubing for single wire connections. Why did you decide to use twist connectors for this project?

sure if it's an older car. Newer ones use the computer to power the starter and doing that would melt the cheap computer ignition switch such cars use

@mystiqueman366 You can wire the power through a cycling switch if you want, I show how to do that in my older video "How to fix your car's Ac cheaply." Here in Texas it's soo hot, freezing up is not a problem in the hot summer. Scotty

Scotty, doesn't running the compressor constantly cause problems? I'm going to need to get my AC to run without my computer since I'm getting rid of my stock computer. Although, I could try to get the arduino (which is working kinda as a body control module) to run the AC.

@uzaiyaro I know how, the average joe does not, and they would never be able to do such a job and figure out which one was bad. I made these vids for average do it yourselfers, not pros. Scotty

@Matthew55904 You would do what I do in the video, PLUS add a relay to the lights. that way the ignition powers only the relay switch, which is very little power drain. Scotty

I did something similar with a cooling fan on my 92 beretta. except i didn't run it through the ignition switch. i ran it directly off of the battery. and mounted a toggle switch in my dash. so as i was driving down the road i could just flip the switch.
