How to ride a pterosaur, according to science - BBC REEL

During the Late Cretaceous, winged prehistoric creatures called pterosaurs dominated the air. They were the first vertebrates to master flight. They were not dinosaurs but closely related. Some were tiny, but some were the biggest creatures ever to have flown. We ask a question you've all been wondering, could we ride one, and if so, how?

Its legs and feet are unsettlingly human.

It's a non-Dinosaur after all, and one with plantigrade unspecialised digits. A lot of paleo-media incorrectly and (un)intentionally just give them bird talons, which are dinosaurian feet, thus another aspect pop culture makes Pterosaurs dinosaurian by association when IRL they ain't.

Yes their feet were skinny, the toes all pointed in one direction, and they walked with their heels on the ground. They were not particularly strong as all the thrust comes from the arms.

Ah yes, the Quetzal, a pterosaur capable of flight while carrying a thick metal platform on its back of roughly 6 by 9 meters with a hut built on top of it.

Ah Quetzalcoatulus! My favourite pterasaur. Wingspan similar to that of a human carrying glider.

Habib and Witton's model of Quetzalcoatlus northropi's assumed 72kg of fat over the 200kg "empty" weight. That suggests that a sufficiently lean large pterosaur would be able to fly well enough with the extra weight of a reasonably light adult human, assuming some sort of riding position that doesn't add too much drag.

Like with horse racing, you'd have to be small and light to ride on a pterosaur. Jockeys maybe
@foovay
@foovay 2 года назад
So about the idea a child could ride; for one thing, there are humans who remain quite small as adults. Your average race horse jockey is much smaller and lighter than the man shown in the demos. But my main thought is that in some countries children ride race horses because they are smaller and lighter, so as long as we are fantasizing why not a courier service - similar perhaps to the Pony Express who also often hired children as smaller, lighter riders. So, I suppose the average adult couldn't ride off to North America, but they could send a letter.

The thought of riding pterosaur or pterosaur like creatures isn't new, there has been some books written on the idea dating far back to the late 1800s, then others followed. Those include, but not limited to comic/toy/TV cartoon Dino Riders, book/TV mini series/brief TV series Dinotopia, and more. If you want to know more books that has pterosaur or pterosaur like creatures being ridden, image search "sci fi books pterosaur riding." If you want books about people riding dragons, there's always Dragon Riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

Aw, that's too bad. Who hasn't dreamed of flying on a pterosaur (pteranodon or pterodactyl as they were known) before, especially riding them in a seated position? Who hadn't thought of this before Dinotopia or Dino Riders? *If* they were still around, and even the pteranodon/pterodactyl were strong enough, I would so ride one.

How accurate is the quadrupedal launch simulation on that pterosaur? wouldnt it launch while also doing an exaggerated bob of the head like a horse does when it jumps? this is bothering me disproportionately
@jacobcox4565
@jacobcox4565 2 дня назад
Pterosaurs could've had gyroscopically stable heads, like modern flying animals. The quad launch is also really accurate, since Pterosaurs had weaker legs and more powerful arm, chest, and back muscles.

I just, how 100% accurate are these. I know and understand that this is a palaeontologists job to guess; and guess being specifically used, cause humans have an extremely vast imagination. But aren’t all these dinosaur bones millions of years old. So, how can we structurally design pre-historic creatures. It’s like putting a circle into a square hole child’s toy.
@Stuffthatsfunny1
@Stuffthatsfunny1 2 года назад
There job is to study and figure out the most likely answer rather than guessing. They look at similar animals to today or others they have found that are similar that have been preserved in greater detail.
@SsJessop
@SsJessop 2 года назад
@@Stuffthatsfunny1 okay, so a hell of a lot of research goes into it. I guess it’s slow going cause we’re only assuming dinosaurs having feathers in this decade. So many unanswered questions I want answering and in our lifetime we’re probably not going get answer ): devastating!!

There are assumptions (educated assumptions) they make, but you are right, so much to find out & so little time life left, it’s so frustrating.
@kathyl9222
@kathyl9222 2 года назад
A lot of it is based on computer models and estimates. The quad launch thing was inspired by looking at bats which do that and the looking at the pterosaur anatomy and finding similarities.
