I know a lot of people really enjoyed part 1, so I decided to make a part 2 to help with any unanswered questions. The example sentences I used in the end of the video were in Italian because I don't really speak Spanish, but you can still use the same principles and apply it to Spanish sentences and tongue twisters 😊

It's Elissa, not Alyssa Hi Elissa I just wanna say that I had really enjoyed part 1 and English is not my native language my is official language is Italian I was born in Italy in nearly sixteen years ago now and I learned how to roll my R’s in September 2011 when I was about to go into year 4 in Elementary School I am going to Year 12 in September (first year of sixth form college ) I am very excited to show off my rolled R at colleges next year , my schools were really impressed actually

Hello, I know you may not see this, but I really need to ask. I've been wanting to learn Spanish all my life because many of my relatives speak Spanish, and my family would like me to be the fluent so that I can talk with them. I am learning Spanish and Japanese at the same time, and I'm finding it hard to be able to say Italian/Spanish r's at the start of sentences. I can easily say them in the middle of sentences since I'm used to saying them, but I can not figure out how to say them at the start of words. Whenever I try to, it automatically switches to a Japanese r which is more of a mix between l and r. Do you have any suggestions?

I’m struggling so much. I’m definitely over thinking it. In the past I’ve had a speech impediment with my r’s so that makes things even harder(I’m good now)but I definitely need to practice more I just feel discouraged because everyone around me can do it and it seems like everyone in the comments can get it so magically. 🤦🏽‍♀️
@elissa.dellaera
@elissa.dellaera 6 лет назад
Divine don't worry about the people in the comments. Especially because the people who get it immediately get really excited and are more likely to comment, and their comments get more likes and are boosted to the front page. I also used to feel like everyone could do it except me. You just need time and practice 💛

I've looked at tons of videos on how to roll double r's. Not only is your method easiest but your humility I feel makes you sooo much easier to learn from. It's a really endearing quality that so rare nowadays and so beneficial in a teacher. After 10mins practice I'm getting an occasional roll and your totally right its when I'm not thinking about it, it happens naturally! I'm so grateful for both of your videos...if only you were teaching Spanish as well!👏

I just discovered your channel, So i am discovering now all the old videos and i find them a treasure and containing rich content. The letter "R" is the trickiest letter in all languages. I know 5 languages, and in every language, this letter sounds completely different. I consider myself studying Italian for one year, more or less (studying alone), and i still find myself struggling with the italian "R". Btw, if i may contribute for this lesson, one the best word to learn pronouncing the italian "R", is the word "Ferrari"; as it contains the single and the double "R" in one word and it should be noticable when speaking. Thanks again for your helpful tips. Great channel.

It's working! I'm not there yet, but I'm seeing my first sign of progress! Long post incoming... My Story: After hearing everyone say how "easy" rolling the Rs is for over a decade, I was really happy to come across your first video that mirrored that frustration and gave a great explanation and guide in how to start. I found that video early in March or early April (beginning of US Quarantine), watched it, and kept meaning to get back to it. I left the tab open ever since (don't judge me) and came back to it earlier today. I watched the 1st video again and then played a video game where there's a new round every minute or so. For the even numbered rounds, I just said "Vord-dray" over and over until the round ended. I did that for about 30-40 minutes and then watched this 2nd video. I listened and took the advice (which did a great job of answering any questions from the 1st video) and then practiced for a bit. I also realized that I didn't want to overdo the attempts, so I took a break for a few hours. Just a few minutes ago, I went back to it and could feel a bit of that double-R that I've never been able to do. I've been alternating between "vorrei" and "burro" and I can definitely feel something that wasn't there before. Sorry for the long boi, but THANK YOU for the video and I may update on progress here again. As a super pale American, I'm excited for this upgrade with the possibility of communicating better with my friends whose first language is Spanish. Thank you!!!!

I just started teaching myself Italian about 8 weeks ago. I've been reading tips on rolling r's, watching videos andd I've always been able to make that vibration sound but it definitely did NOT sound like a beautiful rolled Italian r, like at all. More like a mix between aggressively over exaggerated German & desperately needing Mucinex. But as I was watching your video for the very first time I got it "Vorrei" my absolute new favorite word ! Side note, I saw a post on Pinterest for different songs to help you learn Italian & I've been jamming out to 'Vorrei mi non posto' for like a week straight now. Love that "vorrei"!

This has been something that had been so hard for me to have confidence in just practicing again. I now live in a Spanish speaking city, and my double r's are so bad. I have avoided it after my Spanish high school teacher made fun of me in front of the whole class because I couldn't it do it. But these two videos have given me a new perspective that it takes a lot practice and not something that you just do easy peasy. So thank you ❤️

It requires the UPPER SIDE of the tip of your tongue curled ever so gently against the rough ridge of the palette, behind your front teeth. No extra air blowing or forced effort required. Your tongue will “flutter” and a cool sound will happen as your tongue vibrates at the tip. It is NOT from the throat!! The tip of the tongue will be slightly curled under and pointing towards the throat and you will create the sound. It is gentle and you will not disturb your household practicing because it is not a sound produced at the throat. When done correctly, it does not require any more breath than regular speaking. You don’t see native speakers stop to get ready for the double RR sound. Why? Because it is natural (and NOT like any “R” sound in the English language!). You can absolutely get this skill. Practice and you WILL succeed.😊👍🏼

Holy crap, I've been trying to roll my R's for YEARS. I almost quit learning Spanish at one point because I was so frustrated and embarrassed about not being able to make this sound, especially since it is in SO MANY words of that language. I decided to keep learning anyway and just accepted that I may never roll my Rs. People kept trying to advise me in how to do it, but like you said in your first video, they would give general advice and never really helped. However, I did learn years ago about the single /r/ sound to a soft /d/, but could never get a trill. But after practicing your tips from the first video and this one for just 20 minutes, I managed to get a trill (not perfect, but a trill nonetheless) and I'm SO EXCITED. THANK YOU SO MUCH for getting me that much closer to learning this sound. I cannot thank you enough. Are you a speech pathologist or a dialect coach or something? If not, you'd be great one ;) Your advice is practical and really, I just can't believe that IT WORKED. Thank you!!

Well I'm happy to say, I can say that now! I already had the alveolar tap down but could never relax my tongue enough to trill, I probably spent two hours just wearing out my voice practicing it and it started to happen! Really focusing on placement and relaxing and taking it slow helped alot, and also trying different words. Thank you so much!!!

Then I found this one and the comment of trying to replace the ‘r’ for a ‘d’ for the trill as well really helped! Great video, thanks! I'm taking Pimsler Italian in order to speak to my wife's relatives in Sicily when we travel there for the first time in Q1 next year....none of them speak English! My greatest challenge, as with many, has been rolling my r's...my wife's fluent (she spoke Itlalian growing up) and has no problem with that, but I want to do my best to at least be conversational when we get there. You take a terrific approach and I've been training on it with you. It made an immediate impact. I'm not there yet, of course, but I'm going to include both of your r's-rolling videos in my regular Pimsler practice sessions. I've also subscribed to your video. Thanks so much for all you do..it tells that you really care. Buon sera, senorina! Grazie mille!

thank you so much ! I‘m german. my dad is italian, but he never spoke italian with me but i‘m learning italian for a year now. At first i couldn‘t roll my r‘s at all but after some time i could do double r‘s but not the single r‘s! I asked my dad and my family and they always said „yeah, just roll it once“ but that isn‘t the right sound. Since I saw you video I could pronounce single r‘s and i‘m so happy now because it makes me sound more italian and my german accent now fades more away which i‘m very happy about because I think german accents are the worst in any language 🙄😁

I'm learning Italian at the moment, and the single most difficult part for me is the trilled 'R'. Being tongue tied doesn't help! This, and your first, video have been really helpful in coming at the problem from an angle other than the 'just vibrate your tongue' advice I've seen in so many other videos. Definitely lots to work with here, and I certainly feel more optimistic about it now. Oddly, I'm better with 'vorrei' than I am with 'sera'! The placement of the 'R' or 'RR' within the word makes a huge difference, too. 'Vorrei', not so hard - 'arrivederci' - especially the single 'R' - still a nightmare! I'll keep trying, though.
@elissa.dellaera
@elissa.dellaera 6 лет назад
I do find R's before consonants a lot harder (like in "arrivederci"), if you listen to when I'm reading the tongue twister with the words "porta" and "aperta" my R's don't sound quite as nice as in other words. I have also heard some people use the double R when they should be using the single R, sometimes the vibration is easier for some people and then they can't reduce that to a single tap. Anyway, I'm glad this has all been helpful for you. 😄

I’m half Spanish, half Italian. I’ve been trying to learn both languages for the past few weeks now. I wanted to know how to do the double r, so I asked my brother. And he would say “Put your tongue at the top of your mouth and vibrate your tongue.” I tried searching RU-vid on how to roll your r, then I found your video. After watching your video, I kept practicing rolling my r. Then I finally rolled my r! Thank you so much! :D

I also realized that my tongue "cries" (haha) when I do the R in the beginning of a word, because in Portuguese our R in the start of the word and our RR's sound like an H, but with the practice I'll get there. Is the Dutch R really that similar? I'm Dutch, but from the southern part of the country (which sounds more Flemish), and I can roll my R's but I always feel like they're a lot further back in my mouth than the t/d-ish R.

I live in Belgium, the Dutch-speeking part (Flemish is not a language 😉 but I know what you mean) and here we should pronounce the “r” like that t/d r, but a lot of people use the french r over here.
@JaneFokster
@JaneFokster 5 лет назад
I'm from Amsterdam and I've always had trouble producing a rolling r. Luckily it doesn't matter so much when speaking Dutch. People use different r sounds anyway, from rolling to French and even English/American r's and it's still Dutch. Btw, I might be the only person in the comments who has heard of Elissa's trick before. A long time ago, someone told me I should practise repeating 'beduin bedootje' very quickly and I would end up saying 'bruin broodje' (English: brown bread roll) with a rolling r. It's basically the same trick, but my problem is that I still can't say it in every word and it never feels natural to me. And I've never been able to actually vibrate my tongue, so those beautiful rr's in Spanish and Italian are still a problem.

This video is epic, my name is Roberto and I am always so afraid of introducing myself. After the second tongue twister everything seemed to work a lot better. I personally find saying 'marrone' better than 'vorrei' because I find I can kind of kick the sound out of my mouth on the second r (if that makes sense) which gives a better vibration in my opinion. I recommend learning how it feels to tongue like on an instrument such as a clarinet or trumpet. This really gets the muscle to work properly. I also, coming off of video 1, have felt saying Vord-a-Day(almost like saying What a Day with an accent) gives me more room for the tongue taps. Saying it faster and faster and faster, over and over until you get the first tiny trill.

Patrick Mormino oh thank you! 😍and that's exactly how it sounded when I was doing it at first! So it should be fine, I think you're on the right track. @elissa.dellaera 6 лет назад
Yay! I'm so happy they're helpful! Yeah, I've heard of some people who have that problem. When you need to do a single R just do your best to take my tip from the other video, so practice saying the word "better" and then saying whatever word you're practicing. Think of using the D sound instead of the Italian R sound to prevent you from saying a double.
@storylockett2418
@storylockett2418 2 года назад
My tongue just wants to do the back flip. Growing up, I was taught to really enunciate my words, so I've never said better with a D. That was difficult for me. Then visualizing the d where the r goes, my tongue still tries to flip back where it knows there's an r, instead of tapping. Idk if what I'm saying is making sense. I'm really invested in learning though. I thought my tongue was gonna hurt today, thankfully it didn't lol. I do think you're video was helpful after watching others though.

This video is so helpful! But when I try to practice the double r after awhile of saying it I find myself accidentally adding an “uh” sound where the space is supposed to be...so it sounds more like “vord-uh-day” instead of vorrei or vord-day...I know you said not to get stressed but it’s still frustrating. I do have the single r sound down fairly well tho! Unless it’s by a consonant especially right before a t or d then I have trouble making it sound right 😕 thank you for this video!
