How to Romanticize your Life (when you HATE your job)

How to Romanticize your Life when you hate your job. I talk about how to romanticize your workday even if you want to quit your job, appreciating the small moments, and how to romanticize the everyday. Romanticizing life is like mindfulness and can be practiced everyday. In this slow living vlog I go about my workday and talk all things mental health, jobs, and divorcing ourselves from 'work'
Ever since making my How to Romanticize your Life video the topic has stayed on my mind. In my last video I spoke about how this idea of romanticizing your life is akin to mindfulness, and is a practice that can be used in your everyday life. Still, when looking at videos on romanticizing your life I found what was being portrayed was not reflecting the everyday reality of most people Myself included - my video reflected my days off. The reality is most of us are going to school, maybe parenting, working, and sometimes, working a job you hate. This video isn’t just for people who hate their jobs, but for anyone looking on how to make this practice a part of their daily life and learn to appreciate those small moments a bit more. Now, I don’t hate my job, but my job can be very stressful and at times very mentally and physically exhausting. And when I’m getting caught up in these emotions I need to be extra sure to create space for me to appreciate the everyday. So I thought I would show how I do this practice in my everyday working life
So how do you romanticize working? Now I do draw a line in this aspect. There needs to be a healthy balance on romanticizing working to make your day more pleasant, especially when your job is a source of anxiety, but not over romanticizing work either, as there is more to life than work
During lunchtime I really find it helpful to remove myself from my work whenever possible. For me this means sitting at the local churchyard and separating myself physically from my job. This really helps me feel like I have some time truly on my own during the day, and the mental shift of being in a different place is really strong. Even when I do my best to ‘zone out’ when having lunch at work, I still find myself checking emails, answering questions, or just thinking about what I need to do next once lunch is over. Leaving allows me to really live in that moment, even just for 30 minutes. I’ll set a timer on my phone so I don’t have to keep on checking how much time I have left- I can focus on reading, sketching, or just sitting and decompressing from the morning’s work.
When 5pm hits work is over- but it can still be hard to fully decompress and ‘switch off’ right away. I head back home to give Moira dinner. At this point it is really tempting for me to just sit down and veg out - exhausted from the day. But lately I’ve been forcing myself to get outside once I get home and drop some things off. I’ll go for a stroll around town, sit in the park, or go gardening if the weather is nice, and make use of my evening. I’ve found that this has really helped with my mental health, and stopped me from feeling like my days are revolving around my job alone. When going from work to home, work to home, every day without a break, those feelings can really pile up, and in a way it feels like the agency I have over my days isn’t accessible. By making use of my evenings, even something as small as a 30 minute walk, I’m reminded that I might not be able to control those 8 hours at work, but the rest of it is mine to have.
Romanticizing your life is all about appreciating the small moments. Whether that is during a beautiful day off where you can do whatever you want, or taking advantage of the moments in between during your workday to allow yourself space to breathe. I know from experience that even with the best practices and intentions, some days are just really hard and sometimes out of our control. But by making these practices part of your everyday life, these moments can create spots of brightness and calm, and can even overtake the tough times
I would love to know if you have any other ways that you practice romanticizing your life when you are working a job you don’t like, or during stressful times. Did any of these tips resonate with you? Are you going to start doing any of these? Romanticizing your life can be an everyday practice, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I think one very important aspect of this is to make sure you have hope for something, whether it be a project, a change, a move. I've had jobs that I hated before and it helped having one thing that I worked on to get myself out of there one day, even if it takes a long time. I also think one thing that I don't do enough is to stop scrolling on social media during breaks and lunch, and appreciate that free time.

This is definitely true for me as well! Having a project to focus on really helps keep me motivated

Such good adivise!! Now, I adore my job, but it CAN be a dreadful thing at times. I also try to relate myself to characters that are tired and getting through it. Then I remember... 1/3 of my day is work, 1/3 is sleep, so I have 1/3 for me. It's a great way to really rationalize what you do and what makes you feel happy and fulfilled. Me and my bf have lists of what "fills our bucket" so that when we get dragged down with the mundane, we can have immediate ideas of things that may make us feel better. Picnic outside/on balcony, walk to the creek, garden center stroll, learn a new skill, quiet time together, dance break, etc. It keeps us active and happier.

I love that idea! I'll have to start compiling a list myself! And I love the perspective of splitting the day into thirds, it's a great way to think about it 💚

I’m very, VERY late to the party, but I love this so much. I am all about “romanticize your life” videos that take into account the realities of working a job, needing to do unglamorous things, etc. Beautiful, and subscribed!

Thank you for your kind words! I believe in finding the space where fantasy and reality meet in all parts of my life, and life isn't always going to be the glamorous version we wish 💚

This video was exactly what I needed. I’m a nurse… and my job is so stressful. Relating to a character at work to get through the day definitely has helped me so much. And talking about transitioning between work and home is something I also needed. Thank you!

These are fantastic tips. The tiredness many people feel after work is usually mental so the worst thing to do is go home and plop in front of a TV. Instead is what you did! Go for a walk or exercise! Great video!

Music, music, music. It's how I get through the work days. I have over 20 playlists on RU-vid for different moods I'm in. Some classical, bluegrass, prog rock, 80's, electronic, depression area... Also consider listening to classics on audio books. I enjoy your site and perspective. It's helpful. Thanks

SO appreciated this video!! As someone who works in the service industry (not glamorous at all), it's often hard to feel like I can truly romanticize my life, yet these tips are super accessible and easy to implement!! You also perfectly captured the necessary balance between romanticizing your life as a working person without making your job your entire life. Thank you so, so much for this video, I'll definitely be putting these tips into practice!

I found this video on a whim while searching for something else, and I'm so glad I did. At first i brushed it off as some cheap "self-help" tips and guidelines, but theres some really, really solid and wholesome advice here. Love your take on things!

I'm sorry but Moira is the cutest! 🥰 I always see romanticizing as the opposite of complaining. Complaining on a daily basis might be our default reaction but it only makes working or studying seem even worse. Your video was helpful as always!🌻

I definitely agree about getting out in nature and weather. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I love going for walks in the rain and collecting rocks down by the river. I feel so relaxed when I get back home.

Lovely video Salinda! I always complain about the weather not suiting my romantic relaxation vibes haha, but your walk in the rain looked so fun! I should find myself a pretty (secondhand) raincoat and try to romanticise the rain more.

Hello, this was very I interesting and I didn’t know it was called romanticizing your life. I do most of the things you’ve mentioned except I could really learn to start getting my outfits ready the day before work. I was thinking recently of taking a little flower arrangement to brighten up my desk at my new job and bring nature in.

Love this video! It was such a refreshing reminder and so insightful than other videos I've seen so far. I have a fairly big commute to work, so making sure my mp3 player is stocked with music, interviews, etc. that I like really helps. Even though I'm stuck in traffic most of the time, having stuff that I love to listen gives me some space before being at work.

Thank you for your sweet comment! I know exactly what you mean, I used to have a daily commute like that and having audio books, podcasts, and playlists on the ready helped so much 💚 just that little bit of 'intention' can work wonders!

Also today I got an acceptance letter from the school I wanted to visit, which means I don't have to work in retail anymore and can now get a higher education and get into a new career that I will enjoy much more, I'm so excited!

@@Lily_Autumn thanks! The thing is the registration deadline was March 1st, that was the day I lost my job because of covid and I didn't know I could get higher education anymore (I'm 23) but I took my chances and still applied a few days ago and it worked out so if anyone needs encouragement for something: do it, even if you think the thing you want won't happen. Just do it. You never know! 💕
