Watching you cut the starters to expose more of the tar line, I do that too! Also I was taught decades ago to save the grit in the bundles to mix with tar or silicone to cover the last nails on the cap or any exposed nails in the field!

Im thinking instead of cutting the starter shingles let them over hang the rake as i work up and cut them every five shingles. Thanks great videos .

@@NWIVeteranConstruction Thank you. My biggest challenge has been two roof jacks, both for AC Connection that are close together that a corner of the flat part had to be cut off to clear the upright part of the other. I've had a hard time shingling around those two properly and I know what I have there now is going to leak. So I'll have to go back and try something different. one of them isn't hardly a pipe coming up. It's a small tube for the electrical to pass through that is much smaller than the opening of the boot. They are open ended boots, there's no rubber seal around them. Tomorrow I'll be working with a couple valleys. I worked for a roofer in Arkansas in the Mid 90's for a little bit, just enough to get me into trouble now.

@RabidParana1
@RabidParana1 4 года назад
Only thing different is that you don't. Have to put starters on the hips just the bottom. Then run cap up the hip the same way. Cap the hips first then the ridge. Frist cap on the ridge gets sliced from the center of the tar line out to either the top or bottom depending on preference, so that it can sit flat against the three sides it touches

assuming water shield is better than paper, outside of expense is there something wrong with using ice and water shield on the entire roof?
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction Год назад
Well for starters, it's kind of a d*k move to be honest lol tearing off the shingles on that is no fun, entire roof might need resheeted next time the roof gets tore off. Also, even in icy areas, most roofs that were done well didn't have ice problems on the eaves before so the ice shield is just an extra thing of protection. It's just unnecessary on a few different levels, unless of course, the pitch is 3:12 and lower

What? Tabs? These are architectural shingles. They're supposed to be stair stepped just like this

Does anyone remember when certainteed landmarks came in a paper package? The way you're installing them makes it look terrible. Solids over solids 5 courses up? You gotta put opens over solids! Love it! And now it stands out like a sore thumb. Especiallly in the field when you get like 6 or 7 of em! Looks terrible. It only takes a few seconds to grab a different shingle and that's the mark of a Craftsman.

Would it be possible for you to do a video on the mathematical process on figuring out how many shingles you need for a roof or how many sets of shingles you need and I don't know I was told to follow this RU-vid channel by vandermeer roofing if that name rings
@NWIVeteranConstruction

That's nice of him I'll have to check him out. I have a video on that from about 1 yr ago. If you stick with it it will make sense. Pause the video and take notes because triangles get tricky. Squares though are easy, length x width. I usually round up to the nearest foot and that accounts for scrap

What happens when you get to the last run on your ridge and one side is running an inch and a half off because you didn't mark the whole roof off.
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 4 года назад
Never happens to me unless there's multiple people shingling. Even then. Not an inch and a half off. Would either leave the top row off just incase or several rows and cheat which ever side is higher down gradually
@projectpat2262
@projectpat2262 4 года назад
@@NWIVeteranConstruction fair enough. I been going behind some shotty framers and it's not uncommon to be off an inch from fascia to ridge. So I've been making my guys pop 6in lines all the way to the ridge. Just curious how it works out when not measuring it out. But looks good man
@calebwhite6173
@calebwhite6173 2 года назад
@@projectpat2262 we get started then with 6-8 rows left measure and shift if we need to do they match. Can do this from the start as well and just measure every few rows or more. Depends on how large the project.

You don’t have to do stair steps right at the beginning, you can finish your first row then cut 6 inches on the second and so on, this way you know exactly how short you gonna be at edge as you go.
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 2 года назад
You cannot get in a rhythm that way. That works for flooring and siding but not roofing. Check out my most recent roofing series. Part 3 specifically. I think you'll find it insightful, it's performed very well and one of the few videos I'm proud of 😂

You’d be great to work for. I been roofing for a few years and I’m also a carpenter but I’d still enjoy learning from you a lot. I feel it’s hard to find anyone that matches my work ethic these days but you clearly enjoy the grind as much as I do. Oh and I’m jealous that you don’t have to use tar on shingles.

Now you know who not to call factory on factory is best but I barley did it how many mistakes on this little section than transfer that to an entire roof if u use the force running the shingles up why not the ridge cap it's the same principle

A little mouse can crawl in between his two metal overlap. Not best. You need to squeeze the end of the one coming on top, or if wood deck not straith you need to cut your metal at the peaK of bend or curve and restart your edging with new overlap. If you just do 3/8 outside metal edge you could nail your starter into asphalt strip and with long enough nail you can reach your facia wood too so strong wind will have no chance to play with you first shingle row. If you worried about water penetration you could mastic or caulk top of nails that will also serve as additional 'glue' holding down first row to your starter, especially very low slope roof needs extra attention. Just watch out of amount mastic you use so as to not sticking out and make a mess of the face of your metal edge. Also, since this roof almost flat throw in some mastic or caulking for your eve metal connections, again small amount to keep edging clean. Of course these tricks mostly for homeowners who wants maximum performance out of their new roof. Good luck.
