How To Rotate Front Hand With Boom Pole Extended - Sound Speeds

In another video I showed you how to switch sides with the boom pole extended and in the spirit of happy boom technique training, I'm going to show you the technique I developed to rotate my leading hand 180 degress while keeping two points of contact on the pole at all times. In fairness, someone else may have developed this first but I was never taught this technique; I figured out a way to do it myself so I'll claim personal credit if nothing more.
Going from high to low with a boom pole can put muscles into awkward positions but using this technique you can cut down on the discomfort by shifting into another position. I highly suggest practicing this technique until you have it down smoothly so you don't drop the boom or twist yourself into a position causing you to lose control.
Note: It was my intention to share the handling noise inside the pole while switching hand positions but when I moved to the back of the house to avoid a leave blower out front, I forgot to hit record again on the bottom of the boom pole. Honest mistake and I'll own it. The handling noise is slightly less than when you palm the boom and spin it around. his is because less of your hands are touching the boom and most of the noise you hear is gentle taping on the boom. Time a switch for when the person you're booming isn't talking and you'll face no issues.

WHOA! I just started making videos like 6 months ago, and have only had a boom pole for like a month. This is exactly what I did instinctively, just out of the box and learning to handle it on my own, never saw it in a video or tutorial or *anything* - I’m either really smart, or this is just perfect common sense technique. I’m gonna let myself feel smart. Yeah, I’m a genius.

Thanks Jon. As with most things, this takes years of practice to get smooth and to apply seamlessly on set during a take.

Any advice for those of us starting to feel our age? I don't boom nearly as much as you do, but after a long weekend, I really feel it in my shoulders.

@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
You shouldn't. Even after being off for 7 months, I wasn't sore when I first went back to set. It's all in the technique. There's an easy way and a hard way. The hard way got my right shoulder injured after only a few years of booming but the easy way is still just as effective on set but means I can be lazy and not stretch most days.

Thanks. It's very effective and happens automatic once you've been booming using that technique for a while

Why is a coiled cable the noisiest kind of internal cable? Curious. I have heard the opposite, that straight cables are noisier.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
No, an internal coiled cable can roll back and forth easily inside the tube, more surface area of a coiled cable touching the inside of the boom to transmit noise and fast moves can cause ripples down the cable. THe handling noise you hear in this video would diminish by about half if it were straight cabled, a little more if you externally wrap an XLR keeping it taught and with a transmitter on the mic end of the boom is quietest.

Hello, love your content. Could you please explain why the internal coil configuration is the noisiest?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds Год назад
Because it's got a larger surface area and rolls easily

Neat finger trick/tip. Are Carbon fiber poles used a lot in the field?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
Yes! Three best poles are carbon fiber or carbon fiber/graphite.

Boom op tutorial or HEMA treatise. I can’t tell. 😂
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds Год назад
I don't know what that even means.
@nathanksimpson

HEMA is historical European martial arts. I feel like you could make a shirt in the art style of those treatises with a person holding a boom. Perhaps on horseback?

You know, I have a background in martial arts and adapted some of my boom handling techniques from martial arts techniques ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_V-JD7hwcJc.html

Still looks punishing. Even with breaks between scenes, that is a lot of over head weight balancing.

It's not an easy job, for sure, but techniques like this help.
