I'm very pleased that this video helped you and I'm glad that you are no longer confused about this topic. If you come across other areas of maths that you need help with please post a comment on my channel and I will try to create a video that will help. I am currently creating a series of Cambridge IGCSE revision videos, but the syllabus is very similar to GCSE so the videos I upload should be useful to Year 10 and Year 11 students. I'm glad the video helped for your homework. The good thing about RU-vid maths videos is that you can rewatch them many times or pause them whilst you try the examples. Teachers can talk too fast sometimes when they have a lot to get through in the lesson. I used to do this and didn't always realise that students couldn't keep up. Good luck with your studies.

Hey David ,can you please tell me how to round off 12000 upto 3 significant figures.. By the love the video..
@DavidWrightUK
@DavidWrightUK 3 года назад
The answer is 12000 (3 s.f.). This is because the first three significant figures are 120 and you then need two more zeros as place holders so that the magnitude of your answer is the same as the number you started with. Hope this makes sense and helps.

hey I have a question! So for the example, 12.0025 that you showed us you said that 1 sf would be 10, isn’t that considered two sf? i’m sorry I’m just confused about that :)
@DavidWrightUK
@DavidWrightUK 3 года назад
You have to put a zero after the 1 so that the magnitude (size) of the number is the same; i.e. 12 has two digits so you need an answer with two digits. If you rounded 12.0025 to 2 s.f. the answer would be 12. However, if you rounded 10.0025 to 2 s.f. the answer would also be 10, so sometimes you get the same answer if it is 1 s.f. or 2 s.f. that is why it is important to write (1 s.f.) or (2 s.f.) after your answer. I hope this makes sense. Lots of people get confused about this, so I hope this helps people to understand an issue that can often lead to errors. Best of luck with your studies.

Thx a lot I have a test about this and I didn't understand in class also what would happen if there are no s.f given and you have to find the s.f
@DavidWrightUK
@DavidWrightUK 3 года назад
At high school level you are usually asked to round a number to specified number of significant figures, such as 2 s.f. or 3 s.f. Therefore, there isn't a significant figure that you usually need to find. However, when you are rounding a number you need to think about how accurate your data is and this can affect how many significant figures you choose to round your calculation to. For example, it you are doing a calculation in physics that has data that is only accurate to the nearest metre, then you should only round your calculation to the same accuracy, since there would be no point rounding your answer to millimetres if the original data is a lot less precise. I am guessing that this is what you may mean when you ask about finding a significant figure. My advice is to think about the accuracy of the original data and use this to make a decision. It is also important to only round a number after all of the calculation steps have been completed. Otherwise an error will be introduced. Hope this helps. Good luck with your test.

So how do I know which significant figure to choose? Or which is correct? Or are they all acceptable?
@DavidWrightUK

Hopefully my answer to your other comment will help you with this. Think about how accurate to your data is. For example, there is no point rounding measurements taken in centimetres to six significant figures because measurements in cm are not very precise. Your teacher should be able to help you with this. Rounding to three significant figures is common in chemistry and physics.

If the answer is 12.0 would you write down just 12 or still put 12.0 because your being told to round to the 3rd significant number? Thank you
@DavidWrightUK
@DavidWrightUK 2 года назад
You should write 12.0 (3 s.f.) if you are specifically being asked for 3 significant figures. It helps to indicate what the magnitude of the number was before it was rounded.
