Using this you can find out what that check engine light is telling you for free. You can also run this even if your check engine light isn't on as some codes don't trigger the light. To clear the codes, pull the wire while the codes are being displayed at the light.

BTW. I have a 91 ranger and I have found that once you get all the codes (after starting) and you would like to clear the codes. Turn off the vehicle. Press the break pedal and hold it while turning the key on. Hold the break while the computer checks current codes. Hopefully you have none but in my case I have bad ROM. But, that is the only code I get after doing this procedure. Turn off the key and remove your wire.

your on the right track with clearing the codes..but the best way to clear the codes is to pull the connection you made on the EEC..you must pull while it is giving you the codes..if the problems wasnt fixed prior to clearing the codes they will come back..hope this helps

If you get a code for oxygen sensor running rich, replace the MAP sensor. If you get vacuum at the EGR at idle, replace the Charcoal canister purge valve.

Thermostat is most likely stuck closed, the only solution is to replace it. Once you do you need to be sure that you get all the air out of your cooling system before you go taking it anywhere. There are many videos on how to bleed the cooling system.

I have a 1995 F150. I changed out the EEC IV computer because the original was toast. My check engine light has been on with both boxes and won't go off. I bought an OBD I reader for the Ford pre 96. It doesn't even act like it is hooked up and doesn't read. Any ideas. I'm out of them an so frustrated. Thanks.

thanks for the video man i've been going crazy trying to figure out how to do a self test on a 93 mazda navajo for my auto tech class. now you gave me an idea of how to do it. i didnt know you had to connect it to the gray connection as well

Get a Actron CP9690 code tester. It gives codes and checks solenoids and relays and shows the definitions of the codes. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. EBAY has it. Get 4 aaa batteries for under the rear cover. It includes OBDI adaptors for Ford, G.M., Chrysler, and Toyota. Also a cable for OBDII. Get a USB cable to update it from EBAY. It's well-lit! It comes in a case.

Get a Ford digital code tester or OBDII tester to check codes. E-Bay has Snap-on scanners. Get the cartridges and manuals and adapters and 120 v adapter to check test results away from the vehicle. Get the latest cartridges.

Your code clearing works best if you unplug the EEC box jumper while showing codes.

All of our Fords have had the check engine light on since day one. Even our 07 came on after a few months when one of the pistons seized lol.

Nope should just need to connect the two connections with any wire gauge doesnt matter. Probably just an emmisions related code.

Sweet, I didn't know that. Although it's not gonna work on my Diesel cause theres no engine computer, then again the check engine light never came on, so everything is perfect :D

My 1990 F-150 started running like crap. Really had to start, kept dying at start, then driving it would shift crazy (auto) I was thinking it might be a transmission problem. I suspected TPS, it has some coolant on the wres, but I changed it a few years ago, since 2008 or 09...So it couldn't be that right? The code said TPS low voltage, and fuel regulator wide open. Changed TPS and runs like a champ! Just think how many vehicles end up in the junkyard when you just need a $20 part.....

wouldn't tit just be easier to buy a code reader? I got one on ebay for $10.50 on ebay (incl shipping) that is specific to Fords '80-95

An Actron CP9690 code tester works on OBDI and OBDII. It has code connect to provide solutions according to codes. It is well-lit! It retains memory until you test another vehicle. It comes in a black pouch. Don't depend on check engine lights. They can be burnt out. First check the water level in the radiator. Warm the engine to prevent false codes. If you get oxygen sensor rich codes, it could be the coolent temperature sensor, MAP sensor, fuel injectors, pressure regulator, MAF sensor, air filter, plugs, wires, etc. Run fuel injector cleaner in the tank to clean injectors.

Sounds like some sort of anti theft, no idea how to disable it on a ford my only guess would be if you have power locks use the key and lock and unlock it a few times or even with the wireless fob. Wish I could be of more help.

on my 95 ranger I have the pin adaptor under the dash for obd testing. which holes do I use a paperclip in ? under dash, obd, using paper clip. thanks

Get a code tester to check codes. It's a OBDII if it's a rectangular connector. OBDI is in the engine compartment and it's gray with a single connector.

Check water level, spark, spark plugs, etc. Get a code tester. It could be the coolent temperature sensor. A code tester can check solenoid and relays. Check fuses. Check the fuel pump and filter.

is there no way to retrieve the codes from a 2003 F150 (5.4l), without a scanner? I have a crank, no start issue, yet the check engine light isnt being triggered, the pats is operating fine, lots of fuel to the plugs, and the fuel filter, spark plugs, starter, and alternator are new. i can't seem to find a single soul in this goofy town who has a scanner to loan me, and i've not the cash to purchase one for myself, so needless to say, I'm kind of shooting in the dark at this... I appreciate any input you may offer... Thank u

Dawn if you are still searching for a scanner for this older Ford you can check at O'Reileys or Amazon. Ask for OBD 1 scanner tool. Good Luck!

There. is a cheap digital code tester from Amazon. It reads Key on engine off and key on engine running test. It also shows memory codes. Key on engine off is for problems now. Running codes is problems while the engine is running. Memory codes is for intermittent problems recently. It checks timing advance. Wiring and sensor tests- wiggle test for bad wiring connections. solenoid and relay tests, fuel injection and cylinder balance, etc. Warm the engine first if can. Check the radiator coolent level and oil level. Check the timing and tune-up first. Check for spark. A Actron CP9690 code tester checks more and has code connect to pinpoint solutions for that particular engine and year. Your truck may be OBDII. If there is a rectangular socket under the dash on the left, it's OBDII. If there's a gray connector in the engine compartment with about 4 or 5 slots and a single square connector, it's a OBDI. The connector may be on the drivers side at the firewall.

Was your check engine light on in this video or no? Cause my anti freeze is usually green but it turns brownish black but the engine does not over heat at all or anything ive changed the anti freeze twice after I bought the truck I did it first then 2 times of when i owned it

Check if there is any milky or foamy buildup floating near the top of the coolant or any buildup, if so oil in coolant. The brown could be from rust if you had filled it with straight and added tap water, use distilled preferably. Although most coolants have corrosion inhibitors in them might as well not make their job any harder. The black you describe however makes me lean more towards oil in coolant.

To clear the codes simply pull the wire out of the diagnostic port while the key is still on.

I ran some speaker wire and some male crimp on spade connectors to a rocker switch just to the left of my column, next to check engine light. Now I don't even have to pop the hood!

You can simply disconnect the battery cable for about 20 minutes to clear codes.

this is not correct. you have to turn the steering wheel a half turn in both directions as well as put the overdrive on and off at least for the f150

I think I used something like 16 gauge but this wire carries basically no current so it's not going to do anything

i have a ford 5.0 xlt 150 will crank and idle but when try to give it gas it dies like theres no fuel or even like it loses fire that fast,neww fuel pumps ,double tanks,1994,new fuel injectors,tryed new computer, anybody have any idea

Might be your IAC Valve which is the idle air control valve or could be a vacuum leak or clogged vacuum line. Find a vacuum line that sucks air like the one coming off of your brake booster by the brake master cylinder and blow cigarette smoke into it to see if it comes out somewhere else & you've found your vacuum leak. A nice tool also for vacuum issues is a little handheld vacuum pump which can pump or suck out any clogged vacuum hoses. You are on the right track with what you have already done now just look into the other issues like vacuum areas such as IAC Valve, possibly a dirty intake manifold located directly by your throttle cables, PCV valves and solenoid, broken or clogged vacuum hoses. If none of that works to fix the problem it might be a dead cylinder or catalytic converter or possibly the distrubator cap isn't set on right or plug wires in the wrong place or not completely snapped onto the cap and spark plugs. Good luck and hope all that helps fix your 95 F150.

Check the engine mounts. They are made out of rubber. And if they get saturated with fluids, that rubber deteriorates rapidly.
