The Spoil Canal in Hopedale is a notorious body of water that commands a healthy respect from Louisiana's inshore anglers
Its shallow waters and blind corners are a recipe for disaster, causing boating accidents over the years and even claiming a few lives of those just looking to go fishing.
For these reasons the Spoil Canal has been avoided like a plague, with anglers opting for the deeper and wider Mississippi River Gulf Outlet canal, or MRGO.
But, the MRGO was closed in 2009, sending increased boat traffic to the winds and turns of the Spoil Canal.
This video shows you how to safely navigate this body of water, so you can avoid becoming grounded, colliding into another boat, or worse.
And, as always, remember to wear your kill switch and PFD!

Thanks Devin. Great video. I’ve been wondering about the bayou after the L turn before you get to the MRGO. So is it safe to take that right turn and follow that bayou out to get on the SW side of the MRGO rocks? IMO that would be a good alternative route back in if there was a strong NE wind. But I wasn’t sure if it was deep enough to get down it or if there was any hazards.
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 5 лет назад
Jamie Traweek Good question! Yes, that bayou is safe to take. Treat it like you would any bayou.

What's the average depth in the spoil canal?
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 5 лет назад
Dewey Desselle Well, I haven’t measured out every inch of the Spoil Canal and averaged all the numbers, but I’d say 3-5ft. That part towards the end is shallower. Be sure to watch the whole video.

so, im guessing at the end of your vid is almost to the "long rocks". Planning on going in a couple weeks so trying to do some research
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 5 лет назад
Yes, you are correct. I end the video close to that platform you saw. You can see it on Google Earth, too. I love that you're doing research because it will make the most of your fishing trip. You're showing some initiative and that's rare among people who want to find and catch fish, seeing that most just want a "spot" to go to. I STRONGLY suggest you check out my website, www.LAFishBlog.com and search through the blog. There's tons of good info there, and what you are looking for is easily found with the category drop down menu and search function located at the bottom of each blog post. Of course, there's the membership that gives you access to Inshore Fishing 101, 201, Sight Fishing Mastery School, and the Fishing Trip Reviews to places like the Long Rocks, so you can see exactly how I plan each fishing trip, see where and how I fish, as well as a Post Trip Review breaking down lessons learned plus everywhere I went using Google Earth. It's a great learning tool, but I encourage you to check out the Blog first. www.LAFishBlog.com/BLOG/

@@LAFishBlog Thanks!... another question... if you run through the marsh instead of canal.. and you come out on south side of MRGO.. you just run that straight south to get to the rocks? Also people fish in the main channel? or on the back sides? trying to look around at the map on google to see.
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 5 лет назад
Scottie G Yes, you can go around the Rock Dam. More details in this blog post: www.lafishblog.com/route-around-the-mrgo-rock-dam/ People fish both sides of the rocks, though the outside tends to be shallower, and the inside tends to be deeper. It will be on you to determine where fish are biting on that given day, and it’s my advice that you move quickly to cover as much water as possible.

What is the general etiquette when passing a boat that's fishing in a main canal/passageway? Such as in the USCG rules of the road where "a boat engaged in fishing shall not impede the passage of a vessel using a traffic lane". I personally will just about slow down for any boats fishing, as a courtesy, but where do you draw the line as far as navigating a channel vs. being "rude" to your fellow fisherman?
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 5 лет назад
Good question! Unfortunately, I don't really have a good answer since so many scenarios are different. There's no cut-and-dry field manual for this one, you just have to use your judgment. For example, you saw how I came off plane and stopped pulling a wake for those boats fishing in the middle of the canal, right? Well, I wouldn't stop if I had my father in the boat and he was bleeding out from a vicious polar bear attack at the Long Rocks, right? Obviously that's an exaggerated scenario, but I'm using it to prove this point: it just depends and it's up to you and your circumstances. That and where I draw the line is different from where other people draw it, one reason being my face is plastered all over the Internet. I can't risk the perception of being rude, even if I am not, because then I'll have someone in the ether complaining about how rude I am. But, if I were Joe Blow, none of that would matter. I'd much rather be safe than sorry, so I guess that's where we should all draw the line.

LOL I figured as much. But consider this: even if it were it'd have ship traffic and could become too rough for most small craft under the right wind. So, it'd still be good to know how to run the Spoil Canal (and that was the case, when the MRGO was open). Thanks for commenting.

After watching your video on the back canal I’m surprised how much it has changed, used too run the canal and not see another boat all day except a crew boat, had a 14 ft flat back then and loaded up on trout and reds , but wouldn’t take a chance now with rude fisherman and guide boats who don’t know how to slow down for a smaller boat, no common sense in their brains!
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 4 года назад
Hey Karl, thanks for commenting. It's perfectly safe to go fishing in a 14ft flatboat, and a lot of guides I know are very professional and slow down every time.
