How to safely drive your boat onto your trailer + trailer catch and release

Many boat owners don't know how to correctly and safely drive a boat onto their trailer.
There are 2 main points to remember, the first is confidence. Always be confident, and remember you can always throw your outboard into reverse almost immediately if you get in trouble.
The second important point is how deep to put your trailer into the water. The correct depth to reverse your trailer in is so that the boat is almost floating. Typically a visual guide is when your trailer tires are almost submerged, but it can differ depending on your trailer.
If you boat starts floating whilst still attached to the trailer, then the trailer is too deep.
Do not worry about putting your trailer in the water, it's a specialised trailer designed to be put in the water!
Always evaluate your conditions, such as where the wind is blowing, where the current or side is going to push you, etc.
Another good trick is to approach at a decent speed. This minimises the boats tendency to be pushed our of alignment by the conditions.
When the boat is on the trailer, you can quiet easily align the boat correctly on the rollers by turning the motor while it is on a low throttle. If you boat doesn't move, then back the boat off slightly(no all the way off the trailer), turn the motor and go up the trailer again.

power loading and leaving the engine at full throttle is a sure way to destroy your boat ramp. It undermines the end of the concrete and makes a big hole. when the lake level is low and you have to back in deeper, tires can fall off into the hole. also it will weaken the end of the concrete.

@otm646

Michael you can see him punch it at 4:18 that's doing significant erosive damage to the ramp. There's grit, sand and small rocks being pushed across the surface of the ramp by the prop. Do that 100 times a day and you've got serious damage over the years. River, lake or ocean boat ramps are all constructed the same way with concrete.

@@Michael-dr6ot Don't be a goose. Eric raises a good point. So many ramps are ruined by people driving on when they could easily just use their winch.

@@otm646 It really depends on where you're boating. This definitely *can* be a problem and in some places power trailering a boat is legally prohibited. However in the four lakes I routinely boat in the ramps themselves are of generous length and most importantly the substrate of the lakes is solid enough that it simply is not an issue. Of course it's always good to use the throttle judiciously. While he's right that you're not going to drive through the winch on your trailer, many people have damaged their boat and/or trailer by coming in too "hot".

The only problem with people driving their boats onto trailers instead of using their winch is that they often creat a deep hole at the end of the ramp which eventually destroys a good ramp. As time goes by trailer wheels end up falling into a deep hole at the end of the ramp and get stuck. The concrete ramp loses it's support and also drops, cracks and breaks away. Sure, it's a little bit harder, but I always think it's best to use your winch when you can.

Virtually everyone "powerloads" in my part of the country. Most of our ramps are 50-60, even 70 years old. NONE of them are destroyed. I truly feel bad for those who live (Michigan seems to be the worst) where they have to use the same method of loading that cavemen used when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Length of concrete many ramps you can’t back boat off end such as this one I normally don’t use that many revs Latest 430 fish about has a different view of driving on which is way less erratic If you don’t put wheels in water it takes way too long in busy days 5:44 and in wind or current 5:44 very dangerous winching on with rear of boat fighting you very eazy to slip over pinch points hitting other boats eta I drive every boat on as do every pro Small boats I drag on by hand quickest easiest way On calm days no other boats who cares what you do

where should the trim be when unloading and loading onto trailer. All the way down? And for road transport on the trailer?
@BrisbaneYamaha
@BrisbaneYamaha 7 месяцев назад
When driving on trim the motor up so it can’t hit the ground as the boat goes up the trailer I’ve hit ground heaps of times especially when ramp isn’t very steep You need the prop deep enough to bd able to manoeuvre the boat When in transit in Australia trim up so the prop is 110 cm from boat that way you don’t need a flag on prop In general trim up so you don’t hit anything as car goes up and down hills

You should never power a boat on to a trailer. The prop wash undermines the end of the ramp and it causes holes and the ramp collapses.

Let me point out something REALLY important--how far down his truck has been backed. IF that truck is too far back, the boat will sail right over the bunks and maybe cause damage. His truck is EXACTLY the correct distance back, notice his back wheels on his truck are BARELY touching the water--THIS IS KEY. Not far enough back is bad, too far back worse maybe. In fact, too far back is how people lose their truck, error on the side of caution, start out not far enough, then ease back--careful, just a bit at a time and do all you can to not bury the ass end of your truck in the drink. Remember too sometimes different parts of the ramp are DEEPER--usually the center, try that if you are having trouble and always, always, always, DO NOT RUSH. Take your time, that's the ticket mate.

I got a 5000 pound boat with a 5000 pound winch I hooked to the front of my boat at the dock push the boat over got a remote control push it remote comes right up on the trailer no hand whingeing no having the electric boat winch brake steel cable holder on the trailer great 10 years or I’ve been doing this all my friends if switch to electric winches for trucks off road on their trailers, no problem major wonderful

If you trim the motor up too much you lower the transom and raise the bow That's not good. You need to set the trim so the boats keel is basically parallel with the trailer. This video shows a good trim setting and angle of the boat. Well done

how far in should a trailer be in the water to drive it on??
@BrisbaneYamaha
@BrisbaneYamaha 7 лет назад
You can gauge that when reversing the boat and trailer in at the start. The sweet spot is when the boat only just starts to gain buoyancy, but the friction of the trailer skids is still holding the boat in place. Typically this sweet spot is when the tires on the trailer are only just fully submerged, but this can change from trailer to trailer.

There is something wrong with how your having to leave the motor on when you tie it down. Why isn't the trailer lower in the water? I'm not happy with what your teaching here. I have owned boats this size for over 15 years. I load my boat every time without having to power it on. Using your engine at the boat ramp to get it pushed up onto the trailer will dig out the dirt under the water at the end of the ramp where the concrete ends.
@BrisbaneYamaha
@BrisbaneYamaha 2 месяца назад
Your 100% right But this ramp is very long so no chance of backing off end of ramp With a catch and release you don’t need to power on to hold boat And of course I’m only talking about single handed boating

Watched several of these videos, and can't believe how bent out of shape some people get about driving a boat onto a trailer. "Powerloading" sounds like a divisive term made up by those incapable of doing it. In my area you'd get your ass chewed out if you wasted everyone's time docking and manually loading your boat. Nearly everyone drives on and off because it's the quickest, most efficient and safest way, and keeps the ramp clear for others to use. But, then again, we have solid ramps that extent deep into the water.

Alternate title: "How not to safely load a boat onto the trailer, but risk damaging the boat, the engine, the trailer and the car instead"
@richardredhead
@richardredhead 2 года назад
I've driven my boat on/off the trailer for 30+ years where "powerloading" is the norm. I've never once damaged the boat, engine, trailer, or car. I have, however, seen people damage their feet, legs, hands, arms, heads and spines trying to manhandle their boat onto the trailer on slippery and dangerous ramps. My physical well-being is infinitely more important than any car, truck, boat, or ramp. So I'll keep "powerloading" because it's safer, faster and more courteous to my fellow boaters.

What's a ramp attendant? In the Pacific Northwest, this is one of the most popular methods of loading a boat. Even on reservoirs and lakes. With practice, I've had a boat loaded in 3 minutes. That includes backing the trailer down. Especially when you're dealing with swift water. Quit being a prissy.

🙉🙈🙊 - OMG where to start. Totally unnecessary and, now, with just a twist of I can’t believe what I’m seeing... Leaving the engine in gear with power on while your buddy screws around up under the bow? No, the boat won’t drive through the post but I’ve seem them break off the edge of the rubber stop and slide PAST the post, putting a nice gouge in the hull. Would have cleavered off whoever’s hand was up there as well. What’s the rush? Go slow, take a friend if you’re unsure, get some of those guide posts if you have issues with cross wind loads, position the trailer a bit further back and crank the thing the last two feet. Being doing it 40 years that way. It works. All without point-loading the hull as it levers over the bunk, or stirring up crap to suck into your cooling system, clogging and scoring the impeller, eroding the bottom of the ramp, creating currents for other boaters to content with who are trying to load on dual docks. Just no....
