In this video Evan from Evan's detailing and polishing breaks down how to sand and polish stainless steel. A rare look at exactly how I do stainless steel. Granted this is only an air cleaner off of a peterbilt but this is exactly what I use on all stainless. Some I go to deeper grits but I try to avoid heavy grits whenever possible. I really hope these videos help out a lot and hope to do more instructional videos on this subject later. Stay tuned for the how to polish stainless steel video without sanding coming out soon.

Yeah, Stainless Steel is what I am learning on lol. I do have some experience though, however, it has been many many years since I polished anything. When I was a teenager I used to hunt Salvage yards for Aluminum rims, take them home and polish them up and sell them or use them on one of my hotrods. Today or now I have a huge new project and I think I found the Best Polishing Channel out there ! We bought a super rare 35 ft MCI bus, it used to be a Yellowstone Park Tour bus and was auctioned off in 2020 with one more as these two were the last of the 15 MCI, model MC-5B's that the park bought back in 1975 and 1976. I thought I notice today that the heat was helping polish but I had not idea really until hearing what you said on here, Thanks Big Time Evan. I am an old school Sign Painter and I used to do a lot of custom lettering, pin-striping, gold leaf etc... I wish I was closer maybe we could do a little trading lol. It took me several hours of trying different approaches using different grits to see how the Stainless steel works compared to Aluminum but today after watching a few of your videos my polish job is looking better, just having more knowledge of what is what in this industry is a huge help, again Thanks For Sharing !!!

Nice video. As a retired sheet metal fabricator, This brings back memories of at time when I ran a polishing wheel that weighed a ton as I polished revolving doors sold world wide to a # 8 reflective finish with stainless as well as brass, bronze . My boss took a nail and carved a deep gash in a piece of stainless and I had to remove the scratch using an old large belt sander that was 8 ft of belt on a running on a large belt sander. Then I had to bring that metal back to a beautiful reflective finish, using that big heavy polisher . 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

Hi Evan , great video !! I do a bit of automotive stainless moulding repairs. To make it time effective , I file finish my repairs. To remove file marks I start with 150g then work down to 400 . I then use a hard buff with a green rouge , then switch to a softer buff with a dark grey rouge . Some of the local guys here in New Zealand finish polish with a white rouge (which I don't have) ....my problem is...I have trouble getting rid of 'haziness' on the mouldings . They look great under flouro lights , but in natural light appear to need more work......Do you have any suggestions? ( I should mention ...I have tried finish sanding with 600g and 1200g with only slightly better results) PB
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing 4 года назад
Heavier grits require more heat to get out. Not cut buffing means the color buff has to spend more tome trying to get scratches out and building more heat. What your issues sound like is color burn on stainless. No your stainless isn’t burning. It’s the color burning into the stainless. I recommend the gray first then the green.

Great video thank you ! I have some stainless tubing that I am trying to polish . The tubing has like micro (what looks like) pitting in the surface . I’m guessing it’s raw SS tubing. I have lots of 400 grit but it doesn’t seem to want to get the pitting out. Going to try a 240 or something to get deep enough and then go to 400/600. Still not all that great with my polisher and buffing wheels.. but what compounds are you using and what wheels for both steps ? Thx 🙏🏼

Yo Evan, I am in the process of buffing and polishing my Yeti one-gallon jug. I originally just used the Zephyr Super Shine 'X' kit. Once I went over the jug with all three wheels it was decently reflective but still a lot of lines and swirls. I went back and did 320, 600, and then 800 on my Milwaukee 2738-20 and then 800 on a DA. I am halfway through with the orange and yellow buffing wheel. Do you have any tips or tricks to get a mirror finish? I really like your video and explanation.
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing 7 месяцев назад
I'm guessing it is one of those stainless jugs? If you are using aluminum polishing supplies from that kit you will struggle getting mirror results on stainless. The compounds are not really designed for cutting or for the amount of heat they will take. Plus stainless takes a lot of time to cut and a little time coloring. You will have to cut in multiple directions and patterns to get a great mirror shine. I hope this helps.

I’m not able to find the answer to this question hopefully you can help, the rims and tanks have been polished, I drove through snow and salt for two weeks now the rims and tanks have a yellow haze how can I remove that? And once that is gone and clean what can I apply to the rims and tanks so they stay shiny? I’ve heard you can use WD-40 I think someone was blowing smoke up my backside!
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing 3 года назад
I know lots that use wd-40 but for me as a polisher that makes it really tough to polish next time. That yellow usually comes from the brine and stuff they put on the road. The only way to clean and maintain is to hand polish or full polish. Nothing I have seen so far out there protects from the elements. Regular washing and hand polishing help but isn't perfect. Aluminum maintenance isn't easy.

Stainless is harder when it's cold?.... Enjoyed your video until I heard that. I've watched actual molecular video of stainless under a microscope. Stainless is by faaaaaar more malleable when it's cold. Its a scientific fact. As well as I've been blending, fabricating, fitting, blending (a ton), welding in all processes for well over 20 years in high end fabrication shops. Really did enjoy your polishing techniques tho man! Keep it up!
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing 3 года назад
You are correct about it being more malleable when it is cold. My statement should have been that stainless is more difficult to polish when it's cold. That is what I meant. Polishing is all about heat and yes it is more malleable when it is cold the rapid heat created by the buff makes it super stiff and not want to polish. If the metal is warmer it is far more accepting to the buffing procedure. I've met with a bunch of metalurgists over the years and when we polished stainless in warm and cold temperatures and timed out the procedure and looked at it under the microscope we found that it was easier to polish and in half the amount of time when it was warm vs when it was cold. Thank you for correcting my statement and thank you for watching my videos. I truly appreciate the constructive feedback and thank you. I have been polishing for over 20 years this year and truly enjoy it. Hope you have a merry christmas.

How long will it stay like that
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing
@EvanStegerMetalPolishing Год назад
Stainless lasts quite a while but depends on where you drive. If you drive down south a lot it holds up pretty well. If you drive through the desert and the wind with sand blowing it will shew up the shine pretty quick. So it all depends on the conditions of the environment you work in. But with that said stainless holds up far better than most other metal. It is far harder and more resilient. Thank you for a great question and thanks for watching.
