My mother's asthma inhaler went up in price last year to almost $400...when in Turkey I discovered that it costs about $3.50 there. Same drug, same manufacturer, same number of doses...100 times less. This is such a huge problem in the US.

Pharmacy tech here! Goodrx is a really great resource, but here are a couple tips: 1. You can actually use one coupon and keep it on file, and it will work on all of your medications! 2. These coupons work really well on generic drugs, but not very well on brand name only drugs 3. Please don’t harass us if the price isn’t exactly what the coupon says! We bill goodrx, and they give us a price. Most likely you have plugged something in wrong (strength, form, etc). We can sometimes contact your doctor to find cheaper alternatives 4. Discount card prices can fluctuate, so the prices may very slightly each time you pick up the medication

As a European this amazes me... In my county Finland all prescription medicine have to cost the same, no matter which pharmacy you buy it, it's the law. Also the pharmacists are required to suggest a lower cost brand, if there is one with the same active ingredient and vehicle, of course the costumer decides if they want to make the switch.

Not in Poland. Unfortunately it's a huge market for pharmaceutical companies. Turn the TV on and more than half of the ads are for medications - tablets for pain here and there, take this tablet and you can eat whatever you like etc.🥴. My small town (about 45k residents) has 23 pharmacies👀👀👀. Some people spend half their pensions on medications, some can't afford them at all. My parents are both over 70 and have to pay a good amount of money for their prescribed medications. In the UK, where I live, we have a set price too, and people over 60 don't pay at all.

The last family owned pharmacy in my area, a historical landmark which had been a beloved institution in Northeastern North Carolina and OBX for over 70 years, finally closed all but one location. This place was not only convenient, but the he staff was exceptional. Friendly, fast, and always willing to help. They have gone above and beyond for me when they didn’t have to, and I feel like such a big baby for crying as I’m typing this now, but I guess I’m just realizing how much this place meant to me, and the implications of its closing. This is what Walmart and corporate chain pharmacies have done to my town. If you go to the downtown area, there’s nothing but empty buildings and abandoned storefronts. It’s a ghost town. So many small NC towns are now. It’s sad because I live in an area that genuinely does value and support small businesses, but it’s also a working class town, consisting of mostly military families, college students, and retired people. It’s not always easy to stick to your values when exceeding your weekly food budget by just $10 might mean that a bill won’t be paid on time. This turned into a rant, I apologize. I just hate Walmart. Haven’t shopped there once since my favorite pharmacy closed. Yes, it is their fault. No, I’m not sorry. Please support your local family owned businesses. Don’t wait until they are in trouble and can no longer afford to operate.

Pharmacy tech here. Make sure that if you use multiple pharmacies you carry a list of all your meds so the pharmacist can check for interactions. I’m constantly telling people about GoodRx, Costco, and Walmart’s $4 list. Also, just as an explanation, Walgreens and CVS count on making more profit from markups on prescriptions, where grocery stores see their pharmacies as more of a loss leader that gets people in the store, so they charge less.

Thank you so much for posting about this important issue--made more urgent right now with inflation raising costs for everything. When I was underemployed and didn't have health insurance through work (pre-Obamacare), I was paying $367/month for one prescription medication. I had canceled all my other prescriptions because I couldn't afford them, but I needed to stay on this one to function (and it had no generic). I was lucky because my state has a prescription assistance program that halved my costs. I am also one of those people who uses the same pharmacy for all my medications--I like my pharmacist keeping track of all my meds so she can warn me about potential interactions. I think that when it comes to healthcare, most Americans don't shop around. Not only for pharmacies but also hospitals for procedures. I totally get wanting to go to a hospital that is near your home (or easy to access) or picking a hospital that offers amenities that are important to you. But prices for the same surgery can vary WIDELY from hospital to hospital as well. Lab tests can also be super expensive sometimes. If you are uninsured or underinsured, be sure to mention to both your physician and lab test company that you're paying cash for your health services. You won't know if help is available if you don't ask! My state had an assistance program for lab tests as well, which brought my $157 blood test down to $25, and I wouldn't have known about it if my lab tech hadn't told me. These programs vary from state to state, so know what's available in yours. Look up your state in the State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (SPAP) and other Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (PAP). If you're on Medicare or are a veteran, those programs also offer assistance to people who are eligible. Anyone can also use the Medicine Assistance Tool ("medicine assistance tool . org" no spaces) to look for assistance you're eligible for.

Great advice ! As a retired nurse , I used to hand out coupons or tell people about Good RX. However, I used to tell people to really advocate for themselves and their dollars. Some people have fabulous insurance and don’t pay much out of pocket or have little to no deductible. High deductibles are often very hard to meet , depending on your health of course. Always , always ask what the cash price is for everything. My youngest child had an ultrasound done several years ago. I fell on the floor when the bill came ! Called and fought some of the charges. They eventually reduced the bill. Still had to pay the entire thing since our $6k deductible hadn’t been met. Decided to look around at other facilities offering this exam. Cash price 5 miles away was $137 not $600. Even the ER has cash prices and you can negotiate your bill. I know cause I worked for many , many years in them. Also , Max out your HSA every year if you have one. I have to pick up my only prescription today. My insurance company decided not to cover it anymore. Isn’t that grand … it’s ok though … the cash price is only 8 dollars more than what I have to pay WITH insurance. Pretty crazy considering our family pays $500 a month for premiums and still has a $6k deductible. So ask questions, look around, and be your own champion.

As an Australian who has been on several medications for a number of years, I’m acutely aware of, and IMMENSELY grateful for, our universal healthcare system (“Medicare”) and our Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (the “PBS”.) Along with my government issued Health Care Card (something that ANY low or fixed-income resident can obtain,) I pay only $5.80 AUD for each of my medications. For example, one bottle of my antidepressant will cost $5.80, and one box of migraine wafers also costs $5.80. When I think about the obscene costs of medicines in the USA I feel really angry that so many poor and struggling people are suffering and dying because they can’t afford their life-saving drugs. And it’s all so unnecessary. A wealthy country like the USA can, and should, implement universal healthcare, but as long as all the ignorant and lying politicians and lobbyists continue to falsely conflate such a system with Socialism, I fear it’ll never happen 😔. Stay happy and healthy everybody! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Chaq xx

@@lisan5613 I agree so much and live in the US! I also worked for a major health insurance company and know how the contracts with physicians and hospitals work. The insurance companies allowable amount is ridiculously low, so in order to make any profit at all, healthcare providers have to charge a ridiculous amount! If you have insurance, this doesn’t hit your pocketbook because anything over the allowed amount had to be written off by the provider (if you are using an in network provider) and they are not allowed to bill the patient for that amount. The write off is huge which forces providers to have to charge high prices just to get a small percentage reimbursed to them. It hits hard on people with no insurance or a high deductible plus when you are in the hospital, you don’t know if for example the radiologist is in network and they may not be, meaning they can require the patient to pay that big write off. TIP: most insurance companies have what they call the “ology rule”. If the hospital is in network, you can call your insurance company and they will adjust your claim and the insurance company has to pay that write off. Most companies do not tell their customers that, and you have to know to call and make them adjust the claim (that is what I did for a living, worked in customer service). It is a complicated process that we have here in the US and very unfair. Unless you have good employer paid insurance, it is pretty much unaffordable for many people! Good Rx has awesome customer service and I highly recommend them! Hope this long comment helps someone save the thousands of dollars you might be unaware that you don’t have to pay for out of network providers if you have no choice in seeing them and the hospital is in your insurance network. People like to blame Drs for the high cost of medical bills but it is the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies that are making huge profits and sending lobbyists to DC to defeat universal healthcare, they have the most profit to lose.

It would be fabulous if we could copy the Australian or French Healthcare Systems!! Y’all have such a great healthcare system. There are CHOICES in your coverage, but EVERYONE is covered regardless. Yes, I am an RN & the healthcare system in the US needs a major rehaul!! The pharmaceutical companies are very powerful in lobbying in DC. They stand to LOSE a great deal of money if we change our healthcare system. Drugs are what cost the most to hospitals, which increase cost of hospitalization, and it goes on and on!!

Living in Sweden, I don’t pay a lot of money for prescription drugs. For children under 18, you get them for free (unless you request a special brand, then you might have to pay a little). If you’re over 18, there’s an upper limit of around $270, everything after that is also free. I probably shouldn’t say free, since they’re paid with our tax money, and we do have a fairly high tax rate. Totally worth it though ☺️

Here in Portugal, a 30g tube of tretinoin costs 4.24€ (about $4.63). Most medications are affordable, even without a prescription. Prescriptions are another thing that's different. Doctors have to prescribe the medications without any reference to brands. It's up to the pacients to decide what brands they want to buy or if they prefer to buy the generic versions.

@EMILYHERRERA
@EMILYHERRERA 2 года назад
It can be extremely helpful for a provider to familiarize themselves with not only GoodRx, but also the Walmart $4 list, and any other local pharmacy that has a discount list. Unless you write the Rx as it is on these lists, the prescription will not be eligible for the discount. There are many broad abx and other treatment options to choose from. This enables better healthcare if your pt can actually afford the tx and better ensures compliance. Many prescription plans don't touch the medical deductible so shopping around (and having flexibility with what is prescribed), is typically the best way to ensure effective and affordable healthcare.
