How to save your own Okra seeds. After a good harvest of okra from plants I sowed from seed in spring, I let some pods mature in the plant. I also made sure to enjoy the okra harvest by cooking okra brazilian style. I share tips on how to maximize your okra pod production.

Repatriated to the South after 40 years in California where the earth is rich, I enjoyed many garden volcano plants that just erupted from the ground running into giant healty growth, but not much from okra there. Here in upstate SC, I enjoy okra, one of the many veggies I like because they love my climate and [amended] clay soil, but also because they direct sow so successfully. I've started many a tomato seed I saved from the year before, and like you love Brandywine tomatoes..and Cherokee Purple and Genovese Costoluto, all that have affinity with okra. I brown onions and garlic and add sliced okra then tomatoes and squeeze of lemon juice and salt and a few dashes of tobasco just for slight piquancy and let these all get well acquainted for 20 mins or so [to cook off the viscosity], checking occasionally to make sure the dish has some liquid looseness to it, adding a little water to maintain so as you simmer, and serve over medium grain rice. MMM. Also okra pickles are wonderful.

Thank you for your videos. I look forward to your videos each week. The time you put into your editing and filming is appreciated. I am growing 12 okra plants in Oregon this year. These videos have helped me see what will happen this summer and ways that I can enjoy it. Keep following your intuitive nature. The calm atmosphere you create really makes each video a joy to watch and learn from. Thank you again.

as usual your informationn is accurate and much appreciated. i'll have to try this okra recipe i've never cooked it that way before. i usually make whats called okra & tomatoes its pretty common here in the south where i live. its basically stewed okra and tomatoes, this looks like a twist on that pairing but fresher and quicker to prepare. thanks for the video its truly appreciated.

Been saving my okra seeds for years now. Great food, loves the summer heat.Thanks for featuring this lovely food in your channel. The flowers themselves are just gorgeous. They are great in the morning after picking, just fry them up till they are tender, then add some beaten eggs for a healthy scramble egg. Obviously you can also add any breakfast meats you like as well. It is best not to bag those seed pods in a plastic zip lock bag. There is still plenty of moisture in them even when you let them dry on the stalk. Just save the seeds themselves or that "husk" will cause a bluish green mold to take over your collection of seeds. A breathable bag would be better if you are going to leave them in the husk. Great tips, great video as usual!

Hi Siloe. I've never gardened in my life but I saw it on other channels and it made me think of your groundhog problem. What about making a very tall raised bed out of material that's used for roofs, aluzinc galvanised steel? It's rust resistant and you can make the bed hip or weist tall, so that it's more comfortable to reach for you BUT groundhogs can't reach it. You can also make them look pretty and match your house. The bottom of the beds can be filled with wood waste
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
Thanks for thinking about me. I think that would be interesting to know if it works, but I don’t know how high it would have to be for them not to reach it, especially since it a sturdy structure and not a flimsy fence. They can climb things, but wobbly structures like my previous cages discourages them from doing so. I’m happy to hear you watch the channel never having gardened before.

Unfortunately I have harvested large Okra's and realised they have hardened up. Will it be worth to dry the Okra to get seeds or not?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 3 года назад
It may be ok, but to ensure they have viable strong seed, ideally you should get them to dry in the plant.

You need to research the Barbary Pirates and you may have a different view on the slave trade and find out some history that isn’t talked about.
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
I know about the Barbary slave trade. Slavery is abhorrent, no matter where or who. I bring up Atlantic slave trade because it was directly linked to my Brazilian heritage and the presence of African vegetables in the Americas. Atlantic slave trade also eclipsed Barbary slave trade in scale. It's legacy has especial significance to the cultures in the Americas.
