Megan, you are a delightful blessing. You are so kind and gentle. I want to thank you for taking your time. And about using straight pins, you are absolutely right. We all need them. You're my favorite quilt RU-vidr. Stay well ❤️
Thanks for the great tip, Megan. I've been quilting for several years now (and garment sewing for many years before that), and I find that I STILL struggle with that darned quarter-inch seam sometimes. I go back and rewatch your video on checking the quarter-inch seams and it's a big help. But sometimes, like with these pesky points, I still have issues.
fabric is pretty tricky! I know even when my seam allowances are right on, fabric can stretch a little or distort itself around a seam so theres always a little fudging to do :)
It's so wonderful to see you bring up fudgeing! All the pros do it, I am sure! I hear an occasional mention of it, but rarely is it aknowledged that the fudgeing is as important a skill as accurate cutting, sewing, and pressing. Will you do another one on "taking up the extra"? Knowing that one has kept me from having to overtrim blocks and quilt tops but still get good squaring.
You mean taking up the extra like when you have pieced blocks that are different sizes? I’ve got some tricks for that :). Im so glad you liked this one-I spent a long time thinking fudging was this awful thing that made me a bad quilter but you are right-fudging is a skill like any other and knowing how and where to fudge makes you a better quilter :)
@@TinyOrchardQuilts Yes! I love those moments when we realize we're actually rocking it where we thought we were lame! 💖 ... Yes, mean neighbor-block fitting, and also sashing, and long-strip sashing and borders, where you pin both ends and the middle and then split those to evenly spread out the extra. The other technique of having the strip too long, then just cutting it when you reach the end, seems to result in more warpiness-- I'd rather pin-fudge and know my sashing and borders are the intended length.
Thankyou I’ve noticed when sewing 1/2 square triangles when joining them to smashing or other blocks there’s not anything left to keep points. I have blunted points!
Great tip! Glad to know that I can stab someone with the stiletto. I would only do it if they used my scissors for paper. 🤣 and we all know that would be completely justified
Do you always press your seems open? If so aren’t you afraid of the wear and tare on the seams when used and washed? I like the look of open seems, but wondered about the stress on it. I use a 2.0 stitch length.
I almost always press open and I have only had one seam pop open on a quilt-one of my first. I was all my quilts on heavy cycles and machine dry them. I generally quilt my quilts fairly densely, so that may help :)
Mine is a juki adjustable seam guide. It screws into holes that are in the throat of my machine so I don’t know if it would work on other brands. Here is the link: amzn.to/2Tdf1Eh If that one won’t work, there are some magnetic ones that work on most machines available as well.
I've done this for quite a long time and even though I press my seams open, I've only ever had one seam pop in a quilt after years of washing. I do use a small stitch length (around a 1.6-1.8) so maybe that is the key? I'm really, really hard on my quilts (I have kids and machine wash and dry all of them often)!
When I was in high school, making clothes, my right finger got caught under needle, instead of lifting needle, I pulled my finger out! Still bothers me 55yrs later.🤭
Oh my goodness!!!!! I’m always afraid that’s going to happen to me which is why I starting using a stiletto for little fussy things. I know it’s a risk though!
