This is absolutely brilliant! I think I would try a floor pillow or baby quilt size as a first time project. Thank you for another fantastic tutorial-always appreciated 🧡
This was like a mystery movie, waiting for each of your magic steps. So much fun and no hair pulling and screaming. I have done the "old" method with lots of waste and lackluster results. As always I appreciate your calm voice that always carries such notes of joy which gives me hope for my project. You are a great teacher.
Dannnnnng, this is incredible! I love the look of heringbone but winced at the thought of all the waste. What a fantastic solution! Thanks so much. This will be fun to try!
That was my reaction!! I hated all that cut off! And it didn't even seem like useful scraps since they were weird shapes. I knew there had to be a better way!
I love that you are doing tutorials on more advanced techniques!! (If I never see another HST tutorial… enough said.) Thank you!! This looks like a fun puzzle to explore and I love that it won’t add to my growing crumbs collection!
Wow! This is beautiful and it's a project I actually understand how to assemble, thanks to your thorough instructions! I love your videos, you're such a good teacher! Your quilt is stunning. The fabric choices are so beautifully artistic. You're just amazing! Thank you for sharing so much with the quilting community ❤️
Ummm, last night in my insomnia I watched your video and then this afternoon I had to make it. It was amazingly easy and I love the way it turned out. Can’t wait to make another one!
Fantastic! Great pattern, you are very clever. Thank you for the great tutorial, you made it look like l could actually try this. Looking forward to doing this with all those big bold fabrics you don't want to cut up into small pieces. Really enjoy your channel :)
I've never done a partial seam in piecing, so this will stretch my skills. And maybe patience. But I have a few FQ bundles that might just be perfect for this. LOVE all the colors!
THANK YOU for embracing the dreaded Y seam! I've always thought things would work out better if we just sucked it up and sewed them. An lo and behold - voila! Amazing results! Thanks for always bringing a thoughtful approach to making lovely things. Love, love, love your tutorials!
I love how this turned out and you are right it is going to stretch some brain muscle to not get all turned around but this would make such a cute table topper or wall hanging and I think I am going to have to try this. I haven't looked at the pattern yet but is there a way to calculate the finished size based on your logs cut and used? What a great way to show off some of those wonderful fabrics that you hate to cute up too small.
Pure magic! Your method is so creative, and I love there is no to little waste. I'm almost tempted to make a smaller quilt and having mastered that, do a larger one. Thanks for sharing!!!
Ive seen this video like 3 times since you posted it and I think I'm going to try it. Can't get the idea out of my head! It would be sooooo cooooool! and I would feel like a magic wizard when I was done.
I have been sewing for about 68 years. The very first video that I saw of yours I learned so very much about the thread! I sew mostly clothes as I started a business , like a million years ago, sewing for larger women. One lady was going on a cruise and wanted a sexy bathing suit. Word spread from there and it just kind of exploded. I am retired now and only sew for who I want to sew for. I am going to sew a great grand baby quilt for my great grand babies. So I am going to "binge" watch all your videos. Thank you so much for your videos. They are so informative that I have sent your video link to many of my friends that quilt. Some of them professionally. I do not do longarm, but they do. Thank you again. Deborah
Love the idea of not wasting fabric but here's a suggestion for when you begin. Take an appropriate size square of fabric, cut on the diagonal to give 2 triangles. Start sewing the first 2 strips on the sides of one of the triangles. Proceed from there and end the row with the other triangle or mix them up. That way you don't need to make the second tube at the very end.
this is my favorite quilt to make. I prefer a boho style and these work in with my decor very well imo! My family calls them 'broken herringbone' and I just did a google search and see others call it that also. You never know with my family and made up names for everything 🤣🤣
Brilliant! Partial seams sound intimidating to this newbie but you make it look achievable. Thanks for providing a free pattern so I won't get mixed up with the layout 😅
Thank you for putting out this RU-vid again, it’s my favorite. I need it if I haven’t made the pattern for awhile. I would buy an in depth, well illustrated pattern if you wanted to publish it.
I love your herringbone quilt! I’m new to quilting and love your instructions. Can’t wait to make this quilt! Your instructions are so easy to follow and you have such a calm voice.
So I decided to make this quilt. Changed the dimensions somewhat. It would be a 4x5 foot quilt. And the pieces would be about 3x9 inch. 5 rows made, 5 rows sown together. Zigzags checked. O.K. Then I made the tube, sewing the right and left side together. And the darn thing would not lay flat. It was kind of twisted. After a lot of looking and checking and @&€&%=-+€&, I decided to cut the tube anyway, following the instructions. So I cut a straight line through a Zigzag. Layed the quilt on the table and saw that I put the sides together the wrong way. In the meantime, I was so angry with myself that I went to sit in the pond, to cool down (with my feet). I unpicked the 'wrong seam', and sewed it again. Now all had to do was make a tube with the top and bottom. Nope, nope, nada. I realized that I had managed to make every row the wrong way. If I had checked the points, as instructed, I would have found out earlier. Now I am unpicking the whole quilt, every 140 pieces. And it's a joy, because partial seams are partially sewn double. Writing this, I again feel the need to cool down, in the pond.
This wonderful! Such a cool trick to use in order to save the fabric that is normally cut off and discarded or recycled. Thanks so much. Take care and blessings to y'all.
this looks like a fun challenge...I started sewing together all my 3" strips and cutting into 11' lengths and I think it will be a great quilt...BTW there is an awesome mug with the scrappy bear claw in green just like in the video...ordered one...can't wait
absolutely brilliant... I think you can simplify by reversing two steps. but I'm nowhere near talented enough to stitch the base pattern, let alone test my theory. If you reverse the cutting (of the tube) and the stitching of the edges, I think the stitching would be a bit easier. Same exact seams, but never wrestling with zipping up a tube. And still zero waste.
OMG, my brain hurts. I think I'd have to do the small quilt first to get it. Dyslexic people like me will get a workout. But this quilt is so pretty it is worth the effort.
Wow….love the end result….but way too too much work! For those who like to piece, this is a great method for not waste of fabric! Great job and patience 😋🤗
It’s personal taste but I prefer the look of the herringbone columns done separately vs this method. It is FAR too finicky and complex, not to mention taking so much extra time.
I'm not sure what the name of the quilt pattern would be, but would this technique also work with a pattern of squares which is strip-pieced but offset so the colours descend diagonally?
Hello there; I used to get your videos from youtube on my laptop. I can still get the video, but even with the voice thingy at max, there is no sound. Could you help me, please?
I’m really disappointed. I put together like you did. I have 21 pieces per row. Four rows. It’s like you stopped showing how it’s done, when you get to the cutting apart spot. You don’t show how to figure it out. Mine is a little wonky and feels like a hot mess. Everything went together just like you showed, no problems. I zipped up the last seam but can’t figure out where I’m to cut.
I finished mine a couple weeks ago. In the final cut (top bottom sewn together) you choose the place to cut. It won't matter. The design is continuous.
🥲🥲🥲I’m sad you didn’t answer my question. I’ll ask again and see if I get a response. I’d like to use jelly rolls. How many do you think it would take for a queen size?
