There is a heated debate in France around the expression "je m'excuse." Some people wishing to go by the book argue that it's impolite because you shouldn't be the one "excusing yourself." So if you're a beginner, be aware of that. But first of all, it's not grammatically incorrect. Although the Académie française suggests using "excusez-moi" or "je vous présente mes excuses" to avoid any ambiguity, the Firago and the Quebec Board of the French Language agree to say it's absolutely fine, as it is used as a synonym of "je vous présente mes excuses," literally meaning "I present my apologies." Those who claim otherwise often want to show their linguistic superiority. And not necessarily because you are not a native speaker. Their intention might not even be bad. French people do that among themselves; it's cultural. The language is filled with exceptions, and yet, they always find a way to know "the proper rule." A word of advice: don't waste your time, energy, and self-confidence with them. I know so many people who get discouraged because of the amount of criticism. Keep in mind that you are getting out of your comfort zone to learn another language, while they usually don't even know the linguistic diversity of their native tongue.
