Are you guys interested in me documenting my 3D printer build? Vote in the poll in the video cards (the little info button in the corner), or leave a comment! It will be designed and built completely from scratch. See details for my goals for the printer in the blog post for this video: alansartlog.com/2018/11/how-to-scan-objects-into-3d-models-ii-settings-and-setup-comparisons

Fantastic video and appreciate all the hard work and many many hours you have put into this video. My suggestions for some camera settings... 1. Set your camera to capture jpeg. Resolution high or low would depend on your use case. 2. Set your white balance. 2. Set your zoom and do NOT adjust it. For the skull I would use a prime lens with a focal length of 35mm or 50mm. 3. Set your f-stop to a mid range to cover the subject in focus. A lower f-stop (high aperture) will let in more light but introduce blur (depth of field). For the skull a value of around 5 should cover the distance. 4. Set your ISO to a low setting below 400 is great and 100 is best. ISO at higher levels will introduce noise especially noticeable in dark flat areas of your image. 5. Finally set your shutter speed to get the fastest result at 0 or 1 step below exposure meter to lessen motion blur (op says "camera shake"). OP has 2 lights and a turntable. I suggest bouncing the lights onto the model for greater diffusion and position the lights in line with the camera, one above and one below to get a flatter colour with little shadow.

Hi, loved this video. When I upload images from my Samsung s8 I get this error "Unknown focal length. The focal length is known for too few pictures. Triangulation will fail. Use pictures with known focal length taken with cameras stored in the database." I don't know what to do?
@alansartlog
@alansartlog 5 лет назад
This is because your phone is probably not in the database that regard 3d uses for determining the focal length. You can either set it manually or add your camera to the database (it's just a .csv file, you can open it with any text editor usually). Detailed instructions for how to do both are here: www.regard3d.org/index.php/documentation/details/picture-set You might also want to open an issue at the repo that manages the database for your phone IF it's not there (it might be there but not in your local databade because Regard3D packed an older version).

@@alansartlog Thank you. Why don't you use Meshroom?
@alansartlog
@alansartlog 5 лет назад
It didn't exist when I started using Regard3D and it had/has no documentation. I say had/has because it seems someone is working on a manual now, but it's not officially published. I'm not sure how complete it is, I haven't had time to look at it and play around with the program, but I'm definitely keeping an eye out. The thing is without *some* documentation it's very hard to even get an idea of what different settings do. With regard3D it has a guide which at helped serve as branching off and even then I had to hunt down some of the docs for the underlying libraries it uses to get some clues, and many things I had to just simply try on a dozen different settings.

I really commend your thoroughness! Would you still recommend this software and process vs other available free options? I am searching for a Meshroom alternative as I had understood that having cuda core GPU is a requirement I can't fulfill. Thanks for your time!!

I've been meaning to give Meshroom a thorough try but haven't had time for it, so I cannot say if it is better or not. It looks very good though. Although obviously if your computer can't handle it it's not an option and I'm not aware of any other free options currently except those two?

@@alansartlog I found an interesting blog article from a British palaeontologist peterfalkingham.com/blog/ summing up his experience with a variety of methods you might find interesting.

Hi! i got stuck right at the start line. The when i try to load my pictures the program says "please wait until all image infos have been listed" there are no data in the pictures like camera marker type etc. I added a focal length manually, but still won't let me continue. is there any workaround? All picture is taken from a fix distance and angel.
@Abydos01
@Abydos01 4 года назад
I fixed it. Went ad edited the picture data adding a known camera to it, and played with the focal length. Then bruteforced trough. These two videos give me a lot of help and understanding in the potions thx a lot !

what is your pc setup at the time of this vid. i have 32gigs 3600mhz and 3800x. sorry im just starting out doing real life 3d for printing thans in advanced and you got my follow

In the first video I did this with a laptop. 8gb ram, i5 processor, and an nvidia card, I forget which, that laptop was like from 2012 to give you an idea. By this video I built myself a desktop (16gb RAM, Ryzen 5 1500x, and a nvidia 1050ti), so like half your computer's processing power! So you should be more than fine.

So does Bes avoid your computer crashing?
@alansartlog
@alansartlog 5 лет назад
I've never had my computer outright crash, even on my old laptop. Either the program would crash, or what would happen is that the screen would freeze and I couldn't know what was happening and if that went on too long I'd have to restart. With my new computer it wouldn't freeze completely anymore, but since it tries to use 100% of the CPU, the screen would freeze for a few seconds every few seconds, which made it unusable for doing anything while waiting for it to finish. BES helped reduce those small freezes to once every couple of minutes. So I could work while I waited even if it might take longer.
