This video is so useful mate, my lawn at the min I would say is 70% moss.. my neighbour said it is because we live near a beach and that it is impossible to get a good lawn. I reminded him that they have nice lawns on desert golf courses. But is he speaking the truth? I have cut all the weeds out my lawn today in preparation for scarifying
Not to sure what your neighbour is referring too, it is still very possible to have a great lawn right beside a beach. This weeks video (out at the weekend) is tips on adding fresh grass seed to your lawn, if you are new to lawn care I think it will be of great help to you
After I scarify I use an old electric rotary lawn mower set just above the grass height to hoover up all the debris it acts like a vacuum cleaner on the lawn also works at collecting hedge trimmings. You obviously need a mower with a collection basket, not a hover job. 😁
I've just raked a load of thatch out of my lawn. I do it every year but I don't think in previous years I've been aggressive enough....hence a lot of build up of thatch, not a lot of moss though. I did what you've just told us not to do which is to rake in a cross section 🤦. Never mind, everyday is a school day. I'll put down the fertiliser and see if it improves.
i got a bosch verticutter..its good for the money and good for over seeding if you go deep..better than the allett cassette because the blades are closer together and its less than half the price and it also has more height settings
@@Premier_lawns_official cheers! I bought a hand scarifier today after watching your video, I hadn't scarified my lawn for the 16 years I've been living in our house and couldn't believe the amount of moss, leaves and old grass it collected👍
I have recently put down santa ana couch (southern hemisphere, so middle early Autumn in March) & the grass is very long. Cutting lower creates scalpt brown patches. I have been told to scalp the lawn to remove the thatchy layer & put up with a dead looking lawn for a for weeks, but worried about heading into cooler seasons.
WolfGarten make a scarification rake head that has wheels which makes it really easy to use and control the height of the rake’s blades. However they are expensive at £30 or more, and that is just the rake head, not including the handle.
@@Premier_lawns_official I bought a scarification rake just for my own lawn, which is tiny. If I were doing lawns professionally or had a large lawn, I’d invest in a scarifier as you suggest!
With the spring rake I always tap the top of the rake where it joins the shaft when full of leaf/ moss / debris always seems to get rid of 80-90% of what’s stuck in the rake
That's moss... not grass. Should you treat the moss before scarifying or dethatching? Obviously you live in an area that gets considerable moisture at some point
Great video as always, thanks for the tips. It's always amazes me how much comes up with the scarifier - you'd think it would leave the lawn bald but no! Quick question, do you think you could you use a scarifier with blades (such as yours or an electric one) on a high setting to verticut your lawn? Or do you have to use a verticutting attachment or tool? Some of the electric scarifier say they are also a verticutter, would be a lot cheaper than buying an allet cartridge for my 20 year old mower. Cheers Robbie, like button smashed!
Excuse my ignorance but what is the point of a blower? Surely it's just going to move the problem around the lawn. Isn't it best to just rake up the loose stuff as you go along?
Your videos are so informative, I just had a few questions. If I scarify and then apply an iron treatment are they safe for pets? Or how long do I need to keep them away from the grass? The reason I ask is I need to treat my front lawn, but it’s fully open and there’s plenty of neighbour cats that will be hard to keep off. Thanks
Love the videos Robbie 👍 I stupidly put the iron on before scarifying. Can I apply a second dose of iron straight away then scarify in another couple of weeks.
@@Premier_lawns_official really appreciate the reply…sound Robbie! Just to be clear I applied iron couple of weeks ago, scarified yesterday. I’ll re apply iron and scarifyagain in a week or so? a
When is best to think about using a hollow tine aerator? My lawn gets water logged over winter so my hard work all year is wasted over winter. My lawn is on clay so I have been seeding and top dressing with topsoil, but it's just not happy. I will be out there with my electric scarifier this weekend.
It shouldn't need it, though a light scarify might help it if say for example you wanted to overseed. But you might also damage the new grass so careful consideration is needed
I'm not sure to be honest, probably an electric scarifier. I'm not that aware of many battery operated devices. I'm not up to speed on the best eclectic one. Probably best to jump onto Amazon and read the reviews
While using a scarifier rake to remove dead grass, is it post to pull out grass stolons/roots during the process? The grass looks like dirt now on my Kikuyu lawn.
Hi, Thank you for video. I have 2 questions. 1. How much time per year the scarifying is required? Is it required in autumn as well? 2. What the height of grass allowed to make the scarifying? Is it ok 5-6 cm or should be lower?
Once a year is enough, that's not to say you can't do it more if you choose. Spring or Autumn is the best times. Ideally, the lawn should be a little lower than it normally is cut at, however, if you are using professional tools then that won't matter as much.
i done a womans garden a few days ago and ripped out 11 black bags of moss i used a lanscaping rake to rip it all up now all that moss have thinned out and removed its bare whats the best course of action now should i use a lawn sand to kill remaining moss or leave it to grow then reseed in summer or what shall i do now since moss has been pulled out
i cant ressed while lawn sand is down ? or could i juat fire lawn seed down and the top soil and water and hope for the best in the summer ? shes a oap so i guess shes not to bothered what happens about her grass she thought it was ok with the moss but i said it wasnt as it was bad but i guess she doesnt want to spend a fortune on her grass lol
Padraig, it's hard to give advice like this as I don't know what your lawn is like, what height it is or it's condition. Sometimes seeing soil is a bad thing and sometimes it's not. I know that's a very vague answer but it's not a one size fits all
@@Premier_lawns_official understandable. Currently about 35 ml on the way down to 25ml soon just before scarify and overseed. Just waiting for moss treatment to do it’s job.
hello buddy. I've got an electrical scarier which blade is best the rake or solid blade and what's the difference. And also would you aerate before or after.
I have an electrical scarifier and a terrible weed problem on my lawn. I just can't get rid of it, and in my country there is no herbicides available for this type of weed (narrow-leaved, similar to actual grass). Scarifying and then putting some soil, seeds and fertiliser didn't really help; even manual removal of this weed didn't do much. Water and fertilisers (NPK and iron-sulphur based) are not a problem, the lawn gets all it needs regularly, but this weed is very stuborn! What can I do better this time?
@@Premier_lawns_official 10x5m. Been down for 6 months. One half doesn’t see sun no kids or pets so learning to do a lawn properly basically a crisp looking lawn
