A short review and test of the WR6002-1500 32cm Raker and Scarifier from Screwfix. Screwfix: www.screwfix.com/p/wr6002-150... Amazon model: amzn.to/30gWMNA Amazon alternative model: amzn.to/3h3AKEU
The little girls laughing and playing lifted my spirits and brought back so many happy memories. Enjoy the children, they are a gift and as you age, you will realise that was the happiest time of your life.
Good video, I think you should have scalped the grass with the lawnmower at the lowest setting first, then a run with the rake head before using the scarifier.
A younger and rather more muscular neighbour spent a whole day raking moss from his lawn by hand, and told me how difficult and tiring it had been, so I bought this exact same model from Screwfix. It only took me about 20 minutes using the head with the flexible fingers to rake out enough moss to fill 3 large garden waste bags, so I consider it to be money well spent. I have also used the scarifier head on a section of the lawn that has since been turned into a wildflower meadow, and I was pleased with the results as it cut nicely into the turf when adjusted to the correct height. My only criticism is the collector bag, which is too small to be worth using, requiring such frequent emptying that it's easier not to use it and rake up the waste by hand afterwards. Considering that I only need to use it a couple of times each year and the amount of work that it saves I would definitely recommend one of these, especially for the 'more mature' gardener or those with a decent sized lawn. (Mine is about 80x20 feet) And the children are an absolute joy ! 😀
Thanks for the video, I'm about to use mine today. Re: the grass being intertwined with thatch and getting ripped up as a result. Most websites / gardening RU-vid pros seem to recommend mowing the grass as short as possible before scarifying, I guess this would help
Bought on the back of video. Happy with purchase. Storage, not too much of a problem, not an everyday use device so can remove handles and store away easily.
Ha! The kids and the thatch eating dog were hilarious. Great video. Spent the last two days Scarifying, aerating, seeding and dressing our back lawn. Took me far longer than I thought (I used a fork to make holes which took 2 hours and nearly broke me) I can barely move now but after watering this evening I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Warm weather next two days but promise of rain on Thursday so fingers crossed.
What adorable little girls. Got two daughters myself , 31 and 28 and an 18 month granddaughter and they've filled my life with countless memorable moments. As you say it was well worth the 60 quid to capture those moments. The Aldi scarifier I bought a couple of weeks back is still in the box and after watching your video could well be staying there! Lawn looks fine (newly laid last year) and I was going to scarify just for maintenance/prevention of issues but this has me thinking twice.
Dont worry too much about the brown patches as they will soon green up afterwards . You could always add a bit of fresh seeds to those areas if concerned!!
I got a black & decker scarifier for my birthday believe it or not & the handles snapped on it on 1st use. Straight in the bin. I now hire a petrol one every 4-5 yrs & it only costs £40 for the weekend. Pulled 5 trailer loads of moss out of lawn. 👍
I have been using the same machine for 4 years now Use it once a year (in April) only use the spring loaded tangs. Just like you ,I left the collection box off after it filled in 30 seconds and just takes up afterwards. I find it brings less up each year and as it pulls itself forward is not hard to use. I bought mine from a b&q closing down sale, and got it for £29.99p Highly recommended by me.
I'm still going to buy it whether I need it or not.. It looks fun. Your twins and the dog are amazing I bet they are the apple if your eye😍. You ha e a lowly garden get a trampoline to tire them out lol
I got this last year from screwfix - works great, no need for the grassbox though, it’s rubbish - works brilliantly, my lawn is much much better this year - scarify in march and end if september, don’t be afraid to put it on the lowest setting - need to cut the grass first though
I just tie up the flap on my mower with string to mulch. Only 6 inches though. You could put a wee pilot hole in the flap and tie it up a wee bit do you don’t get covered. Think il get one of these, I did it by hand last year, killer. Cheers
The handles are designed to allow it to be made more compact. You slacken them off and this allows the top two sections to be folded over on themselves. Hope that make sense. Great video. Just got one myself so this was helpful.
I got mine at Screwfix and really found it did a great job on my lawn. The best part of your vid was seeing your Beautiful girls playing with the thatch and the dog. God bless.
Hello like video I’ve just bought rake and scarifier £69-99 screw fix not use yet I’ve put on lawn weed feed moss killer just get moss every year but I fork my lawn so see what like when use this Simon from scarborough 👍👏.
Bought the same machine and found it to be too good! I'd advise to buy it but use the rake cartridge with the spring loaded teeth first. Def scarify your lawns though. Needs to be done, just go gentle first.
Very interesting and all the moments. Just used mine and fairly liked the result. However, where the handles attach to the body, why is there slots for the two screws that do not hold. The handles came out a few times using it and I do believe this is a manufacturer fault, or am I missing something? Thanks for the video by the way...
Not sure what's happening there but they definitely hold tight on mine. You need to take the screws out before putting the handle piece in and tightening the screw again?
cut the grass first take then scarify may have to do it a couple of times going in different directions does look frightening after and you can apply grass seed on the on the worst looking patches also lawn feed ,it will all come back , eventually youl get good at it do once a year ,youl get good at it and have a good looking lawn.
Just bought one of these scarifiers. Not used yet so was interested to see in action. Kids playing and dog was great. Takes ones thoughts away from the awful Ukraine situation in the news. May2022. We have sent £300 to the dec appeal.
Use the black bucket to catch your grass ( rear of machine) was first thing you got out of the box 😉, fills up quick but the vents don't block. Great little machine when used right, always start on high settings an work your way down as needed 👍
Thanks. Yeah I say at one point that I'm not using it because it will fill up so quickly. Wasn't too much work clearing out the vents also. Thanks for the tips.
The video may be about x4 speed but round about 2:30 the dogs tail is definitely at least x16. Thanks for the review though. I'm trying to figure out what scarifier to buy .
I think you will find that placing your camera on the mains cable will do a far better job of pulling your camera over than the wind will ever do, doh.
Im thinking of buying the Screwfix scarifier like yours, my back garden has some thatch/moss & some large bald patches where the soil needs some loosening up before I re-seed it, do you think this device will do the job?....thanks
It will definitely help to get rid of the moss but I think you'll also need to treat the underlying problem that brought the moss in the first place. Probably aeration will be key.
Our lawn looked great but we no longer live there. The biggest impact was aeration and fertiliser. Scarifying is really only needed if there's a moss/thatch problem I think.
Question for those out there with this same machine - I used it on the highest setting and it didn’t even reach the ground. I used the middle setting and it tore up the grass and soil. Pretty destroying it. Is this a machine issue? Am I doing something wrong?
Which head was that? I guess the spring loaded tines aren't as rough as the solid metal ones. Also, it does make a mess, the grass doesn't look better afterwards but give it a few weeks and will come back.
No, you're using it on ground that's too dry. You want to use this on soft soil not dry soil. So if it's tearing it up just give the lawn a bit of a soak and leave it for 20 mins then go over with this.
Oh but that's only for the scarifier not the lawn rake. If it's the lawn rake you want to do it dry and not be looking to go into the ground, only scratch the moss and lateral growth.
@@marcbaigrie2295 I tried a lawn raker on my grass which is now spongy with a lot of thatch but it just left loads of straggly yellow grass. I think I'll use the cutter on it then reseed?
@@ciararespect4296 nah that's ok. What you're doing is bringing the crown on the plant higher to the surface. If you regularly cut once you've done that you'll get less lateral growth and more horizontal growth. You're probably best off reseeding the area if it looks bare and it's autn wherever you are.
Hey Peter. The lawn looks great but we also got in Greensleeves to do an aeration and some treatments which helped a lot. Getting someone in like that is a lot easier but if you prefer doing it yourself then the scarifier is handy.
@@beyondutility thanks for the reply. I’m going to hire a petrol hollow tine aerator in a month then see what I can do. This scarifier on the shopping list too now 👍 cheers
I wish I had known of this machine last year, I hand scarified 1000 sq. yards last year, removed 30 barrow loads of moss etc. Looking forward to assembling my new purchase and doing a light scarification before reseeding. Thanks for the vide.
I think you are only meant to do do one pass then perhaps a cross pass at a time. Apparently people who hire one for the day and go over it repeatedly to get it back just wreck the grass.
They're ALL the bloody same and they ALL do the job. None of this waffle in any of these videos is worth anything without addressing the questions of whether the item comes with either replacement tines or tine cartridge and whether spare ones can be bought. Most of them are DEAD once the tines wear out which doesn't take long and for most of them spare tines are unavailable. The manufacturers exploit the fact that hardly anyone asks this question. Most of these machines are built to be DISPOSABLE after about two years/uses.
Cut the lawn on the mower's lowest setting first. You had the scarifier on it's lowest setting so it'll dig into the ground too much and work alot harder causing it to burn out, so move it up a notch. My lawn looked like this a few years ago, I wouldn't worry it's not gonna grow back much this late you also had some nasty grasses in there too. Do it again in very early spring or when temps get to 12-15c with the blades just roughing up the top of the soil in one direction, then again across at 90 degrees. Re-seed, feed, keep soil damp, not soaked untill grown back. Cut on highest setting for rest of year... It'll look so good you won't want anyone on it.
Just flicking through comments, Yeah see if you watch Yank lawn videos they rarely cut the grass like bowling green, some even have lawns pretty high, looks lush as the plants thriving. Trial and error. Obviously they have different grass types in the States. Moss is a big issue in the UK. I did it all by hand last year. Hard work. At present in March I have a yellow sponge ha. Think il buy one of these, just give it a tickle ! Cheers
@@derekfisher6244 I wonder what happened ? Maybe just unlucky and was a poor build. I haven’t read any other reviews or comments about the motor burning out. The bag being full could burn it out also. They’ll not entertain it because the motors ain’t bomb proof in certain situations but I believe what you say, you just can’t prove it to them unfortunately. Can you access the fuse to change or not ? Some things have sealed plugs nowadays.
