Due to inflation i've started scrapping and it really has filled the gap for me financially, I made $507 my last trip to the yard which bought a lot of groceries...I turned in 565 lbs of pop and beer cans along with some copper and wire...and heck we all know it helps the environment that those thousands of cans never went to a landfill...

Time, time, time. Is it worth the time to break fridges down beyond the heat exchanger, SU and copper? All depends on size and type of fridge and how you value your time.

You should have cut the compressor open with a grinder so you could get all the copper out then you would have really "maximized your profits" 🍺

I suggest you recover the refrigerant and reuse the compressor as a silent air compressor plus you can earn a profit from the refrigeran and save the ozone at the same time just make sure you that the states your living doesn't forbids recovering refrigerant or else you have to hire a HVAC technician to able to extract it legally Well I'm not from the states but base on my HVAC tech from there they said it's illegal to some states to recover refregerants
@iScrapApp
@iScrapApp 7 месяцев назад
Yes in the US you need certification to recover refrigerant. It isn't impossible to do as a layman. See here: iscrapapp.com/blog/can-you-recycle-freon-from-air-conditioners/

As he alluded to, you need EPA certification to recover refrigerants, of which there are many mant types. "Freon" is a brand name for many of said refrigerants. The latest are often similar to propane or butane, or actual propane or butane. For example R600 is butane, R600a is isobutane. R290 is propane. Those are now considered earlier generation, the latest are similar but less flamable. Very complicated subject. Even the oil has to be specially disposed of, to be honest.
@brandongarnett5582
@brandongarnett5582 Год назад
isn't the oil just mineral oil?
@aredditor4272
@aredditor4272 Год назад
@@brandongarnett5582 In my state - California, compressor oil can only be drained out by a CAR - certified appliance recycler. Refrigerant can only be recovered by someone who's EPA certified. Not saying I entirely agree with the ways scrap dealing is regulated, I'm just pointing out facts.

This comment is a little irrelevant to the video but how do you identify tin plate vs corrosion? Ive came across a lot of copper wire that looks 100% like tin plate but when hit with an alloy analyzer it's just corrosion. I don't have an alloy analyzer and I'm having this problem
@Dino_Buk
@Dino_Buk 10 месяцев назад
Use HCL / Muriatic acid and wait several minutes, and you will see if the item is becoming bright orange, which means clean copper.
@Dino_Buk
@Dino_Buk 10 месяцев назад
And use a high percentage, like 33% for faster and better results.
@lt.schlechtnacht9414
@lt.schlechtnacht9414 10 месяцев назад
@@Dino_Buk definitely not worth the cost or time, and plus it's dangerous. Unless your buying your own wire directly from contractors or businesses it's not worth messing with in general. Most scrap companies or recovery companies have connections to forges where their getting 4 and 5$ a lb
