This is an educational screen printing video about how to screen print nylon and satin windbreakers or baseball jackets. This is a very simple explanation of what you'll need, what you should use and how to get plastisol inks to bond to the synthetic fabrics. The video takes us through a quick rundown on using a jacket pallet or hold down as well as why an iron would be a useful tool in printing these jackets and how to cure them properly without burning or shrinking the nylon fabric. In the video you'll see Jonathan mix a catalyst into the plastisol ink on screen and you'll see a black satin baseball jacket as well as a nylon windbreaker being printed. Thank you! I'm very happy to hear my videos are helping out. I think for a polyester jacket I would use a plastisol polyester ink. There are some plastisol inks that are specifically made for polyester. There are reasons for that other than bonding such as dye migration. See the Catspit website for more about that. Instead of using a flash dryer, can you dry it using a heat gun if you don't have a full professional screen print setup?

Instead of using an iron to get the jacket nice and flat I just spin it under my flash unit for about 4-5 seconds and it does a great job plus it is much faster.

+Dave Coberly Yes! My brother and I used to do that in NY at his shop but I recommend the iron here because it won't turn the jacket into a shrinky dink as easily.... LOL. Yes, it's the same for any color plastisol ink. I would recommend at least a flash cure since the poly jackets can melt easily under heat. A heat gun may be too much of a fine point making it difficult to cure the ink evenly without melting the fabric. Thanks for watching! Hey there, new to screen printing & doing research before I start spending money. My question for you is, do you think it's safe to use 1 screen, for water based ink, and clean it (not reclaim) then use it with plastisol? My issue is I will be getting the Ryonet starter kit. A majority of what I'll print works with the water based ink, but I want to print on drawstring bags, mesh jerseys, and shorts, so I was told to use plastisol. Any suggestions?

Hello. Yes, you can use different inks on the same screen if you use the appropriate emulsion. I’m not sure about using anything to take water repelling coatings off. I don’t think I would attempt to do that myself. Nylobond can help plastisol inks bond to those materials but I would do some testing before you run any jobs. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

will regular ink removal chemical be ok to use to clean the screen after additive plastisol has been used? if you leave any on a screen will it harden so much it would ruin a screen?

Question on coach jackets like the Beimar jackets, they have a water resistant coating on them that needs to be wiped off with alcohol and even after that, I've had issues where customers have washed their jackets, no dryer, and that was enough to destroy the graphic. Any input on that or have you dealt with that? Thank you.

You should be able to print any normal nylon material or "satin" finishes and more as long as there are no coatings on the garments.

If you have a wooden or MDF pallet you may be able to use a large “rubber band” around the pallet edges and over the jacket when it is loaded onto the pallet. Otherwise you would need to have a custom jacket bracket made for your pallet if there is not one available already. Or you can have a second person hold the jacket stretched over the pallet perhaps ;)

How long do you flash cure it for? What temperature? You figure I could heat gun it for a few passes?

There is no set time. It might cure around 250 F or something. I'm not exactly sure. Usually we watch the ink to see the wet gloss to disappear and a bit of fuming starts to occur. Like I said, there is no set time. You have to figure out where you are at when you're printing. The ink and the amount of bonding agent will affect the cure and the jacket may or may not take as much heat as another. I made this video a long time ago and I do not screen print for a living any longer. I sell screen printing equipment and supplies. Check out my RU-vid channel page sometime. If you want to read about the nylon bonding agent then check out my eCommerce site: "The additive/plastisol mixture must be cured just like regular plastisol. Curing temperatures should not exceed 285-300°F (140 to 149°C). Over curing is not recommended as this may affect adhesion." So there is no set time. You should be able to print any jacket with the appropriate inks for the material. As for your jacket, if the jacket is like these in the video then yes. Fierce Decals Nope. Has nothing to do with it. That is a customization on a unique item. I don’t do one offs and I don’t generally use the customers garments in case of errors or damage. I’m doing more equipment and supplies sales these days anyway so I am not looking for new print work at this time. Sorry.

Good tutorial, but the amount of time you spent talking about shrinkydinks you could have showed us the flash process. And you have no real time constraints do you? If no, make the tutorial longer :-P

Thank you. I don’t think I spent that much time on the shrinky dinks and the video has to be fun for me to make. The only time constraints I have is office work or print work in the shop I should be doing. Also shorter videos do better her on YT. But I didn’t show it because I didn’t think it was necessary as I can’t really show you when to stop heating the print. I can explain it better than the camera will show such a thing and certain things you need to learn by doing. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

+dexspts It's not difficult. He says to simply put jacket under flash dryer until you see a little bit of smoke. Follow those instructions, and you've done it. And I will vouch for him that anyone who runs their own business has nothing but time constraints.
