Radio repair and restoration ZENITH Model 5808 with 8-S-463: In this Episode we discuss what's a safety capacitor? How to select correct safety capacitor and Fuse for your tube radio and what type of safety capacitor to select. There are TWO basic types of Line Filter Capacitors”, namely “across-the-line” capacitors and “line-to-ground” (line by-pass) capacitors. Line filter capacitors are hardworking capacitors and operate under very harsh conditions.
They can short or explode since they have to handle 110-120 volts on a steady and ongoing basis.
Depending on where the on-off connection is located in the radio circuit, the line filter capacitor(s) may be working even with the radio is turned off.
Yes, if the on-off connection is located after line filter connection your filer caps will be working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (as long as your radio is plugged in). Keep your radio unplugged when not in use.
Over and above the ongoing 110-120 VAC, there are lighting storms/strikes and power surges and spikes in your power lines!
Line filter capacitor has to be able to withstand ongoing high voltages and voltage surges and spikes for years, and if it fails, it should not explode, catch fire or put people at risk of shock.
They designed to safely handle these steady high AC voltages and surges. Should they ever fail, they are designed to fail in a “safe way”.
There are TWO basic types of Line Filter Capacitors” they are called (AC rated safety capacitors)
• “across-the-line” capacitors should be replaced with type X2, Y2, or X1/Y2 safety capacitors.
• “line-to-ground” capacitors should be replaced with Y2 or X1/Y2 safety capacitors. (do not use X2 type).
• Also there are ceramic disc safety capacitors that is a combination of X and Y classes. For example, an X1/Y2. This simply means that the capacitor meets safety qualifications as both an X1 capacitor and an Y2 capacitor. We will discuss how to repair Vintage Zenith console tube radio.

JZ, I have learned so much form you. You explain things so clear and effective that the new person without electronic background can understand and not get overwhelmed. I watched other RU-vid channels and was so confused since their presentation is focused on individual with electronic background. Thank you so much for taking your valuable time making these videos.

I am happy and glad that you enjoy watching and learning. Thank you very much! I really appreciate your time taking time to send me such an uplifting comment. I am doing this as a hobby with no electronic background, trying my best to create detailed videos to encourage others without electronic background that are new to this hobby so they can understand and not get overwhelmed. So happy to know that is working for you. Have a good day! Regards, JZ

Hi Don, thank you so much! I should be in right track since my mentors "you and Rick at all American five" are giving me such great compliant. I have learned so much watching your videos, thank you for taking your valuable time teaching us for last so many years. Years ago I told my wife that I wish could just sat there and watch you guys in person and learn from you. I truly appreciate you experience and wish that I had electronic background or mentor like you when I got started. Was always fascinated with radios since was a child when we actually listened to radio shows as a family. Years ago before internet (LOL), went to public liberty and check out every book about the subject to understand it better. As you know book knowledge is great but I needed working knowledge and experience to be able to perform. Your videos helped tremendously. So I decided to make the videos to pass along what I learned in detailed to encourage others that have no electronic background to understand the process and not get overwhelmed. Have a great day Don! Regards, Jay

Great explanation J. I always install a fuse on transformer sets 👍. Your daughter is going to love it. ❤

Hi Jim, I thought that I was doing overkill by adding fuse. Thank you for telling me that, I feel much better now reading your message. As always, is great hearing from you Jim and thank you for sending me such uplifting message. I am planning to surprise our older daughter with this radio on her birthday, I will add a birthday note for her to pass it along to our granddaughter so they remember us by it. Have a great day Jim! Steven, so good hearing from you and thank you for taking time to message me. Need to put sometimes to complete the product. It offers tube, capacitor, and resistor inventory. In that case I never going to run out of parts since will tell me what I have in the hand. LOL. You know how it is, getting started on project and realize run out of capacitor. LOL. Have a good day! Thank you Doug! Just want to make sure the radio is safe leaving my house. I always unplug my radios if not being used, also do not leave the room meanwhile is on. Maybe I need to install safety cap and fuse on my own redios. LOL.

Interesting video as expected!!! 🙂 I use X1- Y1 so it can be used either way, across the AC line, or hot to ground.. In many cases the line cord is not polarized, so I use one from each side to ground, or across the AC line.. Robert

Hi Robert, that is a great idea when the power cord is non-polarized, thanks for sharing. Since radios that I am working on the power cord are in very bad condition, replace them with polarized cord and hook up the Hot side (+) to ON/Off switch. I am still learning from you guys and thank you again for being in touch and sending such uplifting complement. Have a good day! Regards, JZ

@@RadioFixer I read that it is estimated that about 7% of American homes that have polarized electrical plugs in their home, are wired WRONG where the hot and neutral are reversed.. Scary stuff but many do it yourself home repair are done wrong... Sort of like those that get the Hot and Cold water lines mixed up on a sink or shower or washing machine .. Sometimes the only way to protect stuff is use capacitors on Both Sides of the power cord..

Thanks for the education on line caps. I tend to overdo some things myself so I don't have to worry about them. I am looking forward to seeing you make the tuning capacitor belt. Is there some way of determining whether a "micamold" capacitor is really mica or just a paper cap in the mica case? Thanks.

Ian, so good hearing from you and thank you for uplifting message. I always check the schematic first to see what is the size on those "domino" capacitors. Also check the color code on capacitor, my understanding is Mica capacitors are in "picofarad" (PF) and "molded" capacitors are in "microfarads" (uF). There are over a dozen different dot codes for "domino" capacitors, many of which are read in a circular fashion, i.e. left-to-right on the upper row and right-to-left on the bottom row. Guess that is why I build my own color code decoder program since it was so confusing to remember. LOL. Hope this helps. Have a good day! JZ
