In this episode we discuss how to clean vacuum tube pins and what product to use to lubricate them.
I will discuss options to replace 6X5 Rectifier vacuum tube and why. We will disuse why Tuning Eye 6U5 or 6G5 tube is not working.
In this series we discuss step by step how to repair and restore 1939 ZENITH Console Model 5808 with 8-S-463 Chassis antique radio.
We will discuss how to repair Vintage Zenith console tube radio.

JZ, I have learned so much form you. You explain things so clear and effective that the new person without electronic background can understand and not get overwhelmed. The wire that is wrapped around another wire but actually isn't going to anything is called a gimmick. It usually gives a small bit of capacitance ( to ground) about 5 or 6 pF. Basically for noise suppression in the wire it is wrapped around when tuned at certain frequencies otherwise you may hear a whine like noise when you tune to a certain frequency. We call this a notch filter in electronics. Zenith began using this damn rubber coated wiring in 1937 and was a cheaper subsitute for the cloth type wiring. Who knew that even 20 years later it would solidify and decompose. Zenith figured you probably would buy a new radio by then! Those fine pipe cleaners are great. Have a set myself. You are a meticulous restorer and don't want to make any mistakes. We should all strive to be so good at this kind of repair work. Thanks for the hard work you do my friend on making these videos!

That wire that is coiled on both sides is called a "mock capacitor". Somewhere the engineers must of figured that there needed to be just a minute amount of capacitance to enhance the circuit.

Hi Tony, thank you for letting me know. First I thought that manufacture forgot about soldering that wire.. LOL. I truly enjoy working on these radios. Was always fascinated with radios since was a child when we actually listened to radio shows as a family. Years ago before internet (LOL), went to public liberty and check out every book about subject to understand it better. I buy a lot of my parts from Just Radios in Canada they always been good to me. Jay don't cut the red wire Oh wait sorry about that I was thinking of the bomb squad disarming a bomb lol Yes those cat eye or tuning eye tubes are a bit different to wire up. Obviously you did a great job jay it's working. Thanks for sharing.

Great video J. I’ve heard that the ‘X’ plate 6X5 tubes are better constructed tubes than the standard coke bottle types, so they don’t short like the G type tubes. Yep, that 1Meg resistor is a tussle. 😊

Hi Jim, you are correct. All my research indicated that 6X5WG is better then 6X5G. I like the style of G model since they so unique design as you said like a coke bottle. Just want to make sure do everything that I can with this radio so our older daughter and granddaughter can enjoy it for many years and remember me by it. Deoxit is the goto cleaner for switch contacts, connectors and tube pins and sockets.

James, you are correct. I have used Deoxit for switches, contacts and very happy with it. Since we live in Florida the humanity is so high most radios tube connections and pins are corded and not having a good connections so I used the other product for that since it works very well in high hummanty.
