I really appreciate this no-step-unmentioned guide to selling a vehicle for the first time. Some things are not common sense if you’ve never sold a vehicle before, and going in with the big picture and how to avoid scammers makes going towards this transaction less anxiety inducing and with little chance of surprises that can end up costing the seller in the end. Good info, but in California the plates go with the car after the sale. We submit a release of liability to the DMV (can be done online) and just a call cancelling your car insurance is sufficient.

That's true, but release of liability done online doesn't leave you off the hook until the buyer do the DMV visit In California

@@TaishoKenpachiSorry, but that's not how it works. Per the California DMV website where one can complete the release of liability online: "Sold your vehicle? Completing a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) lets DMV know that you are no longer responsible for parking/traffic violations or civil or criminal actions associated with the vehicle after the date of sale." Nothing is contingent on the buyer doing what they have to do with the DMV. Not sure where you're getting your information.

Not that difficult to sell a car with a lien. Just have to work through a bank and confirm that the institution is sending title to the buyer.

I'm selling 2 cars soon and this is helpful. The last time I sold a car it was at the end of a lease and even though it was a hassle working with the lease company I make $2000 instead of paying to turn it in. I especially appreciate your suggestions with taking photos.

Good car selling video but the only thing that is not up-to-date that you mentioned is advertising the vehicle for free as yes the Facebook market place is free but craigslist isn't free anymore to place a ad to sell your car. It now charges a $5 fee .

The best way I've been doing it in KY is meet the new buyers at the county clerks office. They take the car out of your name and you take the plates. The new owner provides insurance and gets new plates. This way they're not driving around in a car with your insurance and in your name.

I have a lien on my car but I’m going to get approved for a line of credit I can use to pay off and have the lien released. That’s an option worth looking into if you’re in positive equity and are able to pay the credit back once the cars sold

Iam also in NY state. BUT i don't want to turn in the plates but transfer them to new car BUT it may be another week before that happens,. What to do in mean time??? If i call insurance tell them its sold and I have the plates is that good?

I know this videos is old now and I understand it's not easy to cover everything, but I myself could never see finalizing a price without first looking it over inside and out and then taking a 5 minute drive around the neighborhood (with the owner). I'm going to assume this is what you meant. 34:55 If not, 9 out of 10 buyers are going to look at the seller cross eyed, like you want me to pay 1-100k for a car and just agree on a price blindly?!

Whats the protocol if seller self-maintained said vehicle. No records to show, but very well maintained (oil changed, tire rotations, break and rotar replacements etc..)

When private selling a 30k car to a serious buyer, what if the customer can not pay in full and would like to finance? Do you suggest we lean away from that and only stick to either cash or certified check? Im looking to private sell my car and I’m curious if you ever ran into that situation before. Thanks

If they finance thats fine, just meet at the bank to do the transaction so its smooth. Banks do it alll the time

U don't know what ur talking about,yes u can sell a car with a loan or lien on it, the person buying it can get a loan on ur car or pay ur loan off and get the title.

Have you contacted Carfax about errors before, we tried emailing them a few times but haven't heard from them at all and we do not want any errors on the report that can stop the sale of a car.

I've been looking around but nobody really goes into the details of what to do with the license plate and registration. You definitely take it out and then what? How is the new owner gonna get a new one? Can they drive the car home? Or do you have to drive it to their house, etc.

You meet them at the county clerk's office and they transfer it out of your name. New owners get a tag then and provide insurance info to the clerk. This way the new owners aren't driving around a car in your name and insurance.
