Been selling on ebay since about 1999 in a few different capacities from ebay motors to crafts to vintage items. Just a few of my 2 cents, lol, always use all the characters in the title if you can! Also, if you know a particular group wants something that doesn't really have anything to do with what your selling, use that keyword. For example, selling a vintage macrame plant hanger, use the word Boho. So, fabric would be the same, Tim Holtz stuff used be kinda steampunk. Research, research, research what's running for what prices, how many and what are the actual sold prices. Very often I get more than what has sold because I find out I am the only one who has it, lol. Promoted listing is good when there are lots of the same product running. Write very detailed descriptions, it's better to make your item sound worse than it is if you list every flaw and detail than have someone get something and be disappointed or mad! I am new to your channel, came over because of your new quilt as you go method! Really enjoying the detail in your videos!
Thanks! Yes it’s here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8-Fyf3kQCVg.html and there is also one on making the individual blocks for it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t4lWUiYlgww.html. It was super fun to make!
Excellent tips. I've overextended the purchase of fabrics vs. available storage space and been wondering how to resolve the issue. Not very smart really, but I love fabric..... apparently more than I love sewing 🧵 😂. Thank you for the video 😊👍💕
Very informative. I have always been afraid to sell anything on line, thinking “ who would buy what I have”. You have encouraged me to give it a try. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this video. Great info. I'm reorganizing/reestablishing my sewing room after replacing the flooring and a move and have so many multiples I need to get rid of. My biggest drawback has been the boxing needed and getting it to the Post Office. I have many items that will need cardboard boxes and filler, which means bulky goods to take to the Post Office. Mobility is an issue for me so I've been stalling, but I really need the space back.
Not going to lie - packing it all up is annoying but if you make it a time limited thing that you are just doing for a week or two it doesn’t feel as bad as doing it slowly over time (for me anyway!).
This is inspiring, tbh. I have a LOT of fabric, tools, notions, etc. from my step-mom's collection. She passed away last fall, and I got a haul. Between her stuff and what I already had, my sewing room is bursting. It would be good to make some money as I clear out the excess. This video has some good information and, as I said, inspiration for processing the mess. Thank you!
Great info and tips! Happy you have made some money! I need to do some destashing myself! Have a great week! Looking forward to seeing what your creative mind is going to make next! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for all the information. I need to sort through my fabrics as I have far too much . Some fabrics that I don’t like I have been cutting into brick size to make a scrappy quilt.
I did not realize that anyone would want my leftover jean waistbands. I know what I will be listing on Etsy this week. Thanks for the tips. I wish I was closer I so would have remembered about your the coats thread, I would have purchased it from you. Next time.
Fantastic video! One thing about Etsy, at least in the US, if you make under a certain amount the ads are not optional. I've been with Etsy for a long time (since 2007) and some of the recent changes, like the ads, make me want to find a different platform.
Hmmm - I remember having to turn a setting on for the ads. But honestly I wouldn’t really see why I wouldn’t use them. There is a charge for the ad only if something sells (at least on my account) and as it was a sale from an ad it is by definition a sale I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise so it’s worth it to me. If I had to pay for ads even if things didn’t sell that would be a different thing - wouldn’t want that.
@@ScrapFabricLove I'm in the US and there is no way for me to turn the ads off, at my current level of sales. It's not that I mind using the ads, I just don't like not having a choice. Etsy keeps finding ways to squeeze sellers, like the shipping thing. A few years ago Etsy added the shipping cost to the total sale price, which means Etsy gets more of a cut. Etsy says to adjust item prices to recover the cost, however, my prices are already higher than similar, mass-produced items on the site. I make everything I sell and can't afford to lower prices to stay competitive. I could go on... I do have a big fabric stash. Your video tips might help me get ahead a bit, so thank you!
Hi I loved the way you explained this selling way. Thank you for telling it. I’ve also now seen some of your lovely quilt works and would like to sew it your way. So far have only made place mats. My big thing is a Queen Jubilee quilt. Wish me luck. Sibylle.
Thanks so much! And I definitely wish you luck on your Queen Jubilee Quilt - sounds fab! Just don’t put too much pressure on yourself and you’ll do fine!
Thanks! That’s my Denim & Scraps quilt as you go quilt. It’s a free pattern that you can follow by watching the block video and the assembly tutorial on my channel or you can also find it on my blog at www.scrapfabriclove.com
Very helpful video and I love the quit behind you!. I;ll be dissasembling jeans and never thought of selling the pockets. Can you share how the pockets should be cut for sale? Must there be a certain seam allowance around them? Do most people take the pocket off of the jeans and recycle them? Thanks!
Glad you liked it. I have seen people cutting the pockets very close like straight up to the seam and selling them that way and I have seen wider. I have cut mine basically with as much room around the actual pocket as I can depending on the state of the jeans (some of them had rips in the behind area!). I like you was thinking seam allowances but I’m guessing some folk who use these have super heavy duty machines and might not care. In any case in my listings I just say ‘the pockets have been cut to provide the maximum seam allowance possible around them but this area will vary’. No one has questioned it so far! To your last question I don’t really know what other folk do - unfortunately I do think some people just through out the bits they aren’t going to use themselves.
I left as much as I could based on the state of the jeans (and without taking away from the fabric I was keeping for myself from the pant legs). I have seen listings where they cut the pockets right up to the pocket seam which doesn’t make sense to me as I would have thought you needed a seam allowance. There may be folk who don’t want the extra fabric but I opted to leave it for anyone who does 🤷♀️.
Good ideas! I have sold on a mailing group/list and that was a free site. The only down side is that it stuffs your inbox with loads of emails for items that you may not have an interest in.
For eBay you can put the measurements and weight in as you write your listing and it will figure out the postage for you (at least here in the U.K.). Same with Etsy. For the destash FB groups I actually set a low postage price to encourage sales and just kept that in mind when I set the item prices.
On eBay and Etsy you put that in at the listing stage. You can actually buy postage labels through both sites too so they help you calculate. Here in the U.K. postage goes up based on size and weight and you can find all that on the Royal Mail website so it’s pretty predictable. For the destash groups on Facebook I put the postage low and increased the prices to cover it as it just made everything easier. Folk always like ‘free postage’ if you can build it into the price but equally folk who shop on eBay and Etsy are used to paying postage charges. You can also look at similar listings to see what they are charging to give you a ballpark if you aren’t sure.
It’s done through eBay. You have to tell it what account you want the money sent to and you need to set up a way to pay any fees or postage to eBay. Usually same account you get paid into.
I’m not an accountant so can’t say for sure but I would think of it myself in a similar way to the money you make at a garage sale or something like that. Not sure the tax man would be all that interested unless it was really getting into big bucks!
