How to Sell Solar for Beginners 

Just got a job at a Solar Panel distribution center, and I'm absolutely loving it. Coming from a miserable and toxic experience at my last job, everybody is so happy and so enthusiastic to be there. Everybody has a good attitude about what their doing. I'm trying to learn absolutely everything I can about Solar so I can become successful in it, maybe work my way up to selling solar

You have to believe in what your selling. You have to be a purchaser of what your selling also and whatever is the reason you bought it ARE your sell. Like for me I’m young guy that wants a homestead type of life, if something happen to the economy I want to be prepared to Live off grid. Especially in today’s economy, also every great civilization / economy has fallen so I want to be prepared. Solar is a huge part of Off Grid living. That’s how I’m going to “Sell” it to my customers. My pitch has nothing to do with saving money or clean energy, it’s about preparation. I think it the best pitch in these times.

I see all to often companies trying to sell cookie cutter solutions. Most salesman don't even give you time to look over the contract terms. Some I have encountered have even said you would get money back to cover loan costs while the power company decides if they want to allow a connection or get around to it. When in actuality the company they represent has no intention of doing that. Finally there are a lot of companies that "train" a salesperson by a very short presentation and as a result they are desperate to make a sale and can often mislead, and know veery little about what they are trying to pawn off. The part about the cost is important because the company trying to sell could be way more expensive than a well rated company.

I am a new representative to the solar sales community. Enjoyed this video look forward to learning more to be an active solar educator.

I find "How To" sales tutorials interesting in that they seem to always leave out acknowledgement of that inexplicable X Factor, to use your phrase. Top sales people are usually perceived as charming and charismatic. It seems that personality trait is somewhat elusive as far as being able to practice and perfect. Some people just seem to have it, you being an example. In fact, it is well known that most buying decisions are based on emotional factors NOT technical. While it is very important to understand your product(s) and be able to explain adequately to potential customers, that is not what closes the deal. The foregoing is not meant to be negative, only an admission that its may be better for some people to save themselves years of frustration and disappointment by staying away from direct sales.

Good presentation and mostly good information. For the viewers, most solar systems will NOT produce power if the grid is down. Even if you have a battery backup, the system just be wired for grid down circumstances. For example, nearly all homeowners in Florida that suffered through hurricanes were not able to use their solar panels to power their home appliances or air conditioners. You don't want to be the salesman who didn't give them the whole story. Also be sure to understand the IRS Investment Tax Credit (ITC). Not everyone will qualify for a tax credit - you must have earned income and pay income taxes to get a portion or all of the ITC. Many retirees will receive no tax credit. But the ITC can be used over multiple tax years. If using financing, the ITC will play a significant factor in the payments after the credit which may not happen in one year. Most solar financing is re-amotized if the homeowner applies that ITC to their loan balance which will lower their future payments. Another major factor with solar financing is the cost to the solar company to buy the interest rate down. Be sure to talk with your lender's representative to understand how their program works and what the costs to YOU are. Your sales manager may deduct those finance charges from you. Can you absorb a 20% dealer fee?

Is solar a seasonal sale or year round. What do you do in extreme cold. Do you still knock doors?

I like think of myself as a solutions person vs a sales person lol. And if what I'm proposing does not solve your problem, than no close. I don't want an unsatisfied customer.

Note some time battery back up But normal a solar install is grid tied. Grid tied will shut down when you loose electricity. So you don’t back feed the grid. Unless you have $$$$$$$ in battery back up system. And a transfer switch or a separate non grid install. Grid tied when you loose power you loose your solar. To disconnect from grid not back feed it Note : it will probably cost me more to about the same money to dispose these panel in 22 years .

Here a question everyone should ask Solar panel are hazardous. Material to dispose at end of solar panel life how much is it to remove and dispose 1 solar panel. I see quotes it cost a lot of money.

Im not a sales person but this is good information to know. Why? because since i have my Enphase system on my house I can help my sales guy with whom ever is wanting a solar system. But most of all, I get $$$ on referrals!!!! ;)

As a electrician I install my own solar non grid tie. I install my own extra panel with solar plugs through out my house. Why would I want to give back solar to power grid. I used all my self I had a extra 400 amp switch and ran parallel wire to my flat roof to my basement. I’m in it for $3,000 dollars with extra wire and supplies I have left over. And my electric bill was $60 last month. My min meter socket bill was $30 a month. Plus tax and fees up to 41.00 there charging me more because I don’t used as much as I used to If I hade solar company install it it probably be $$,$$$ I did it my self. But my other house is a farm off grid for 18 years that better a 1000 amp hydro turbine generator for the farm. That 24/7. I buy my battery from my alarm supplies company there that same battery but not classified as solar I get then a lot cheaper like big battery are $$$ cheaper deep cycle or lead Still need to build my battery bank I be adding 200 amp hour battery for $80 for next couple months. Because the battery not classified as solar battery that jack the price

Maybe the fact that they have to buy a new system after 25~ years is a deal breaker for them. Is it really still cheaper than grid energy long term considering this recurring investment. 3- is it just the panels that need replacing after 25~ years? What about the battery or other consonants of the system

Here in NY solar kinda sells its self. 5,000 back from state, 30% back in taxes if you buy the system and in the boroughs 30% off on property taxes for 4 years. That I think is bull shit, taxes on Long Island are triple they should get that but the city has way more lower income people so they reap the most benefits. Real people who sell don’t have pitches, I hate that word, you sound like a robot. At my company our first steps building rapport that’s building the bond with the customer, I like to ask hey your car do you lease that or own? If they say lease then maybe I’ll pitch then the lease, if they own they get the loan, I give both options though. The most important part of the meeting is the bill! You need to piss then off, make them curse and swear when you show then all the fees they pay! NY is the 3rd highest state in the country so I get then riled up, here they raise them 11% a year so I’ll give them 5 year breakdowns by year 25 their bills at 800-1,500 where at solar it stays locked in at one rate. You sell like me you will make money!

You know I’m sorry to say the solar industry is becoming as bad as the car dealership Industry. It’s all the stories I hear about people being ripped off from the solar panels and the fact they came to my door and they pitch me that same terrible misinform lying information to my face. I want solar panels and the battery to sustain power when the power goes out that’s it. I may use my system at peak hours and then switch back to off-peak hours So the system can charge up again. But this net metering and making money off of it that’s all I ‘cause that’s not gonna happen you may lower your bill that’s about it.
