How To Separate Front Suspension Compression and Rebound Damping on BMW S1000RR
BUYING THE 2D SUSPENSION POSITION SENSOR
The device fitted to our 2015/2016 model can be purchased in Australia from Shane Kinderis and S1KR Racing via their website at s1000kracing.c... , or in Europe through Alpha racing - www.alpharacin...
THE EXPLANATION
You can change both front rebound damping and compression damping on the BMW S1000RR. However, in stock configuration for bikes fitted with Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), the front damping settings for both are changed together as a single setting, unlike the rear.
So if you set front damping at a let’s call it ‘faster’ or ‘softer’ setting (e.g. -4), both compression and rebound will have less damping, hence the suspension will extend and compress faster than say a slower setting (e.g. +4).
This combined setting explains why the front suspension setting in the dashboard is labeled "DMP," rather than "REB" or "COM" as we see for the rear.
WHY ARE THEY COMBINED IN STOCK CONFIGURATION?
The rear shock on the S1000RR recognises when the bike is rebounding (going up), and compressing (going down), via a factory fitted rear spring position sensor. Because of that, the bike’s system can employ different damping settings for rebound and compression.
In standard (stock) configuration, the front suspension only knows how quickly it is moving. It does not recognise the direction of travel as there is no position sensor (unlike the rear). So the amount of damping applied to the front shock is the same for down and up, I.e. compression and rebound.
THE 2D SENSOR SOLUTION
Without going to the extent of replacing the suspension, the simplest way to separate damping settings for the front compression from rebound is to install a position sensor on the front. Fortunately for us, 2D have worked with BMW and produced such a device.
INSTALLATION
The device is super simple to instal, no special tools are needed, and once installed is a plug and play device that works perfectly from the get go. Once it is connected correctly you will be able to adjust front compression damping separately from front rebound damping.

Hi Jorge, I took your advice re the Brembo SR brake pads and absolutely love them on my 2020 S1000RR (I also upgraded the master cylinder to the Brembo RCS19 Corsa Corta). I've been thinking of installing the 2D position sensor and I think you've convinced me to go ahead with that upgrade too. Loving this channel!

@@TheBikeStigwhere u pluh the 2D sensor? And you do the video with a 2017-2018 model but I can't find the sensor... just for the 2019 and foard.

@@ricardoreis2648 you should have instructions with the 2D sensor if you bought one. The plug on my bike is sitting in the wiring harness against the left side frame close to the left fork, it is blanked out with a cover. If you cant find it, information should be fairly easy to get about where it is on your bike. Hope that helps.

yeah its a good one ay. I cant remember where I got it, I think I had to go to Spain to get it originally but I am sure they are much easier to get now. I did a video about this a fair while ago which has all of the info in the show notes, might be useful to check out - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EStOHbcMa5c.htmlsi=z9mxYcyX8pdjOji4

Does this work with the 2023/2024 models? I can only seem to find it for the 2016-2018 line.

Yep, same system for the later bikes which I believe should cover 2024 models. Take a look at Shane Kinderis' website as he is my first stop for this type of stuff - s1000kracing.com.au

And if i want to go to factory settings i just hit the reset button on the side stand with the engine running or off with only the ignition?

If you are talking about damping settings, I guess that might be right. I'd be checking the manual for the bike. Personally I just do adjustments as required and have never used reset. If you are talking about going back to the front damping being combined, you simply remove the device.
